Chapter 3: Proposition

1216 Words
Slamming my door shut, I leaned on it for support. Clutching my bag close to my chest, trying to regulate my breathing. Trying to comprehend what the hell did I just witness. Did he really...?  Slowly I composed myself and moved towards the kitchen counter, where I placed my bag. Taking a glass, I filled it with water and took a big gulp of it. Trying to calm my nerves. Slowly it was working. Putting the glass in the sink, I went straight to the bathroom took off my clothes and turned on the shower. Stepping in I let the hot water relax my muscles. Every time I closed my eyes it would play in my head like a scene from a movie. The gun, the dead body, blood. Marco. I squeezed my eyes and rubbed as hard as I could trying to erase it from my memory. Sighing in defeat, I turned off the water wrapping a towel on my body.  Wiping the fog from the mirror, I looked at my reflection. Pail-skinned with dark brown eyes. Plain brown eyes. Blow drying my chestnut hair, I brushed through it and put it in a bun. Walking to my room, I grabbed the largest t-shirt, put it on, and crawled to bed. Knowing I won't be able to get any sleep.  ~•~ Here I was sitting at my desk typing away in my notes. While glancing at the exit door. Thinking that any second Marco will barge in and start looking for me. This morning on my walk to the hospital I had this feeling that I was being followed. But every time I turned around no one was there. I was feeling paranoid. "Dr. Reed?" Jackie interrupted my thoughts. "There is a patient here to see you in room 1" I froze. A patient? Or Marco posing as a patient. Looking at the closed door of room 1, wishing if I stared hard enough it will disappear, but not in this case.  Sighing I grabbed a notepad and slowly walked to the room. Knocking twice I opened the door, picking through I saw Mrs. White and lovely elderly women. Letting out a relieved breath I walked in.  Throughout the whole day, I was waiting for Marco to walk through the hospital doors or even the giants. To my surprise that didn't happen, and I wasn't going to question it.  I have contemplated multiple times to call the police or even my brother, but I was scared. Scared that I would end like the guys from last night My shift ended quicker than I excepted, not going to complain though. Walking to the bus I admired the New York city sky. It was rainy today. The clouds were dark grey. Fog coated the high buildings giving the disappearing effect. Perfect cuddling in a warm blanket with a hot chocolate day. That's what I intend to do once I get home. On the bus, I called Tom to see how he was doing but it went straight to voice mail. He has been putting in a lot of hours into his work. I hope whoever his after will get caught so he can come home more often. I miss him. Getting off the bus I walked to my apartment complex. Taking the stairs to the 3 floors.  I couldn't wait to get these scrubs off and take a long relaxing bath. Unlocking my door, I walked in and stopped in my tracks. Marco and the giants were just casually standing in my kitchen. With one hand on the door, I tried to bolt out of there. But failed miserably. My arm was grabbed pulled back to someone's hard chest and the door was shut. I slowly turned around and saw the owner of the chest. It was Marco. He was not amused in fact he looked annoyed.  "Going somewhere Doc? " he asked nonchalantly. Letting go of my arm. "I didn't see anything. I didn't tell anyone" I blurted out. Backing away slowly towards the door. "Is that so " he questioned looking at me puzzled.  he took out his gun from his waist band and put it on the counter.  Walking towards me. "I don't like liars Doc "he casually raised his hand and with his fingers put a few strands of my hair behind my ear. " Now let's take a sit and talk. " he placed the hand on my back and guided me back to the kitchen where we took a sit. Before anyone could speak, my phone started to ring. No one moved. I didn't dare to.   Marco reached into my bag and took my phone placing it between us. The screen showed one missed call. After a couple of seconds, it started to ring again. It was my brother. "Answer the phone," Marco said to me "Careful what you say" he picked up the phone pressed the green button and put in speak. "Hello, Alice " my brother quested, you could hear paper rattling in the back "I got a missed call from, are you home," my brother asked curiously. Marco picked up his gun and motioned the phone. Clearing my throat, I spoke. "Yeah, I was on my way home and wanted to see if you were going to come home early today" my voice was shaking as I spoke. While eyeing Marco the whole time. Hoping my brother would say yes and come home early. "are you coming home early today," I asked as Marco moved his head side to side disappointed. "Sorry, sis not today. We are investigating a murder that happened last night. I can't talk now I am being called take care " Before I could say anything my brother hung up. There was dead silence in the room. Marco looked up to the two gains and nodded his head. They started trashing my apartment. Flipping couch cushions. Breaking the glass table.  "What are you doing?" I asked frenetically looking around. "What are..." I stopped when I saw Marco rolling on the silencer on his gun. "Oh god," the realization dawned on me. As I started crying. "You are making it seem like a home invasion," I asked more to myself. Marco finished rolling the silencer stood up and pointed the gun at me "Please no .. please don't". I cried getting up from my sit. I started historically crying. "I am begging you please don't" Marco looked uninterested as he walked closer to me. I started to hyperventilate. Sobbing uncontrollably. "I will do anything you ask. please don't kill me" I continued begging. Wiping my tears, I motioned him to stop walking towards me. "Wait, please. If you kill me the cops will come after you. My brother is a..." I started hiccupping "He is a well-known prosecutor his name is Tom Reed. He will come after you he will avenge my death, please I begged" as silent tears start rolling down my cheek. I was relieved when Marco lowered his gun "Your Tom Reed's sister," he asked walking towards me. Before I could nod or do anything. He looked me in eyes and spoke.  "Marry Me "Excuse me? the Italian Devil said What? Authors Note: I am as shocked as you are.
