There was a time, many many years ago before either you or I was born that the country was engulfed in a great and terrible war between the northern and southern tribes. Wandering Davey was not a violent man by most accounts, but he was a patriot. And so when the time came for him to serve he joined the army willingly, though I can't seem to remember which side he fought for. I suppose it's not terribly relevant to the story. Davey was strong of body and mind, and became a trained soldier easily enough. He might have even become an officer if he had stayed on longer, but as I said he was not the kind of man to relish that sort
