The Alpha's Calling

Chapter 3

Nyx POV

Walking along the foyer, Katie could sense the Alpha's presence very quickly. The testosterone was thick in the air. A shiver ran up her spine. "Mmm, the smell of unmated males.." Nyx commented as she liked her plump lip.

"Nyx, please let me do this on my own" Katie sighed. Sitting front row and watching Nyx hall full control made her nervous.

"Calm down, kitten. I promise to be on my best behavior." Nyx purred in response. Katie rolled her eyes. "Why do I feel like you don't know what the word 'Behave' means?"

Nyx chuckled through the bond. "We're here to find our mate so we can awaken, correct?" Walking down the large hallway, pictures of historic pack leaders adorned the walls. The chandelier above reflecting off the marbel floor caused a warm glow that felt inviting.

"Yes, that's the plan. If there even is such a man.." Nyx came to an abrupt halt. "Why are you questioning the Goddesses plan for you?" Nyx almost sounded hurt by that remark..

"It's taken this long to find you, I'm expecting our mate will be just as difficult to find." Nyx gentlt brushed her fingers against their cheek.

"That isn't something you need to worry yourself with, babe." Scanning the hallway, Nyx managed to find a powder room off to the side. Locking herself inside, she threw a wicked smile into the mirror. "Let me show you something." Placing her hands on the counter, she gripped tightly.

Rolling her neck, she could feel the tension relase and the lights dimmed instantly.

Katie's could feel the heat raising from her toes as it entwined along every fiber of her muscles. From her chest, a white light glowed brightly. Her hair defying gravity as it floated around her. "I will give you my oath, I will not fail you, Katie." Nyx's voice rang clearly within the bond.

Katie peered into the mirror, finally seeing first hand who Nyx was. Katie's eyes were solid white ans glowed, the aura surrounding her was bursting with energy. The aura didn't have a definite color, it felt smokey.

The veins from her neck to her eyes started to turn black as they reach her eyes. "Do you believe me now? We could awaken on our own, without a mate. Only it will be more painful. We can't let anyone know until the time is right." Nyx sighed. Apparently exerting that much power wipes her out.

As quick as it all started, the energy was sucked out of the room. Nyx shoved herself back in leaving Katie in full control once again.

Katie's POV

Katie's knuckles were bone white from clinging to the sink. With a steady breath, she released the sink cautiously.

A sudden knock made her jerk. Pins and needles radiated from the crown of her head, down to her toes. "Oh s**t!" she squeeked quietly. Adjusting her dress and hair quickly, she relaxed. "There she is.." Nyx cooed.

Opening the door, stood a handsome man waiting patiently on the otherside. "Good Evening." his deep voice was as soft as silk. Katie barely looked at him, afraid she'd give away what happened in the room. "Hello." she replied briefly as she walked passed him. Katie could feel Nyx smile with approval through the bond. "That my dear, was one of the Alpha's. " she sang excitedly.

Katie glanced over her shoulder, meeting his gaze as the door closed.

His brown eyes were captivating, and from what she could tell; she would have to look up at him if they stood side by side. Which was on her checklist of important factors for a mate.

Nyx rolled her eyes, "Calm down, dear. We haven't met the rest of the panel. Although, he did have a feeling to him." she could feel Nyx stirring around inside.

Once back in the main foyer, Katie found Addie. She was just taking a drink of water, when she caught sight of Katie and came walking up. "I was wondering where you ran off to." Addie mimed wiping sweat from her brow.

"Sorry, had to find a bathroom. Anxiety was high and needed time to gather myself." Addie nodded. "Girl, I feel you. Also, did you notice something strange earlier?" She asked as they made their way to the ballroom.

"Strange?" Katie gave Addie a puzzled look. Stopping at the threshold of the room, Addie grabbed Katie's arm gently. "It felt weird, like the lights flickerd for like a good give minutes. Plus it felt like all the energy was sucked out of the building."

Katie could feel her cheeks and ears begin to burn. What the hell, was it what happened in the bathroom? Did everyone feel it?? "I noticed the flickering, but that was it." she replied. Addie glanced at Katie, as if searching for any clues. "If you feel anything weird, I need you to tell me."

Katie could tell that what happened really stressed Addie out.

"Don't say anything yet." Nyx spoke through the bond. "I don't understand.." Katie thought. She could feel Nyx shake her head. "Not now." Nyx said sternly. Addie watched Katie quietly. "Earth to Katie..?" Waving a hand in front of her face.

Addie's face came to focus as if realizing she had been standing there the entire time. "What in the hell was that?" Addie questioned. Katie took a defensive step back. "What was what?"

Addie rushed Katie into a quiet corner of the ballroom away from prying eyes. "Don't play with me, your eyes glazed over and turned white." Addie's face had paled and was on the verge of either a meltdown or kicking my ass.

"I'm not sure, but I can't say anything right now." Katie confessed quickly. She's never been one to hide things from Addie. They knew everything about each other. "You can't say anything yet? What the hell, Katie?" Addie protested. Katie started to respond by Nyx cut her off "Keep your mouth shut!" Katie jerked from the intensity of Nyx, mentally gagging her.

"I'll try to explain later, once we're in our room for the night." replying quickly as the Alpha's filed into the room. Addie rolled her eyes and groaned. "You bet your ass you will." She mumbled.

By the looks of the crowd, it only seemed to be a handful of unmated females that were invited. The Alpha's took their place on the stage like dias. Four thrones stood erect behind them.

The MC greeted everyone cheerfully. "Thank you gorgeous women for accepting the invitations to the Alpha's Ball. We have four Alphas here this year. Allow me to introduce them. Starting from the left, we have Alpha Jeffery from the Silver Lake pack. Alpha Jeffery nodded and smiled to the crowd. A tall fair skin male with brown hair, a vibrant smile. He wore a stunning black crisp Armani suit, he embodied confidence and chrisma.

Megan had found her way to Katie's side. "Holy shit..." Megan gasped. Katie giggled in response. "I got a dump truck of an ass, I wonder if he has the equipment to haul it?" she winked at Katie and downed her shot. Jeffery peered down at Megan and winked. "I do believe that's a yes." Katie replied.

"Next, we have Alpha Adriel from the Rocky Mountain pack." Adriel had his black hair pulled back into a bun, sporting a trimmed beard. His hazel eyes seemed to hold the attention of some of the unmated females. He wore a Grey suit that fit him like a glove. Katie could feel the energy of the women around her, excitement and lust. Nyx scoffed through the bond. "He's a wanna be bad boy, but would cave in an instant." Nyx gagged jokingly. Katie could resist a smile that crept across her face.

"Our third Alpha tonight is, Jake from the New Moon pack." Jake had beautiful blue eyes, tall and also fair skin. Tattoos peaked from the collar of his shirt, climbing up his neck. Black messy styled hair, black form fitting shirt, sleeves rolled back to his elbows exposing more ink on his arm. A few women in the crowd practically swooned in response.

"Pft." Nyx commented through the bond. "I won't lie, he does make decent eye candy."

"Our finale Alpha tonight, from Raven Falls, Alpha Derek." His eyes scanned the crowd. Nyx was silent for once, which was a little scary. Once his eyes landed on her, the room begun to slowly fade out, the noises from the women dulled into hushed silence. His face gave nothing away, his brown eyes held an intensity of knowing. Katie's chest tightened in response. An electrical charge ran along the tips of her fingers.

The light flickered. Addie appeared silently beside Katie, grabbing her hand. "Snap out of it. You're going to expose yourself to everyone." shis whispered. As if the breath had been knocked out of her, she finally came to.

Katie's eyes shifted to face Addie's understanding blues. "Let's go.." Addie pulled her gently, weaving through the crowd as they made their way out of the ballroom. Finally out of the room, Addie turned to Katie in shock. "It was you, earlier. You caused that.." she said as a matter of fact.

"I don't know what's happening to me.." Katie glanced back towards the ballroom, Derek's eyes still watching her, Addie glanced towards him. "Let's get to the room, then we can talk." Addie begun to lead to their room. Addie was a constant person that was always there no matter what, she can grasp the situation with a clear head without hesitation. Katie knew she could always count on her.

After a good ten minutes of wondering the halls and getting turned around twice, we finally found the room. Addie walked in first, checking the suite out before allowing Katie inside. Closing the door after Katie was in, Addie turned around and sighed heavily.

Katie made her way to the closet for her night clothes. She was ready to get out of this contraption and the corset was beginning to make her feel claustrophobic. "Katie?" Addie called to her. "Since when did we start keeping secrets from one another?"

Katie felt guilty as hell for keeping this from her Best friend. "She wouldn't let me say anything. She practically gagged me." Katie sighed. Nyx was still eerily quiet.

Addie flipped the light on in the connecting bathroom. "Who is she?" Addie asked as she grabbed towels from the linen closet by the shower.

"Her name is Nyx." Katie walked into the bathroom. Though the bathroom looked more like a damn spa. A large soaking tub stationed in the far corner, a stone walk-in steamer shower with multiple heads. A his and hers sinn with a large mirror that took up half the wall on the side where the door was. The lighting was a soft warm glow. "Nyx?" Addie asked as she handed Katie a towel and the shampoo and body wash that was provided. "Why does the name sound familiar?" she continued.

Katie sat her things on stool outside of the shower. "She told me, that the Goddess hand-picked her herself for me." Katie shrugged. Addie made quick work of the corset that had Katie's waist cinched in. Once it was released, Katie took a deep breathe and exhaled happily. Damn, that feels good to finally have off.

Addie smiled and made her way back to the room. "If you need me, I'll be writing and stuffing my face. I'm starving." she giggled.

Katie undressed and walked into the shower and turned the hot water on.

The hot water raining down over Katie's skin felt exceptional. Cleansing her of the frustration of today's events, sending them floating down the drain. Finally able to process her thoughts, of all the Alpha's that were here, only one really held her attention. There was something about his eyes, like they can see right through her.

Like there was nothing she could possibly hide from him, that he wouldn't find out. The thought had her heart racing. His black dress shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, dark purple tie, accentuated his chest. His deep brown eyes, resting upon his high cheek bones, all the way to his full lips. Katie groaned.

Why was she feeling like this? This wasn't how everyone said they felt when they met their mate. Katie could feel the tug of depression weighing down on her.

A sudden knock jolted Katie from her raging thoughts. "Katie, we have company." Addie stated.

Company?? Ugh. She was ready to just be done with today and start anew tomorrow. Making quick work of washing her hair and bathing off, she forced herself out of the comfort of the hot shower. Drying off, she pulled on her pj pants and a tank top, while towel drying

Walking into the bedroom, Katie was scrunching her hair, looking up she froze. Addie was sitting down in the reading nook in the corner. Three black leather chairs sitting around a coffee table, Derek was sitting in one across from Addie, talking.

Katie's blood ran hot, heating her up from the inside out. Addie's eyes glanced over his shoulder finding Katie. Derek stopped talking noticing another person had walked into their conversation.

"Hey hun, Derek wanted to come and check on you." Katie could tell that Addie was barely able to contain her gleeful smile. Derek glanced down at his hands, Addie took the split second to wiggle her brows in Katie's direction.

"I'm alright, sorry for rushing out. I'm not very good with large crowds..." Katie replied. Derek nodded quietly and looked up at her.

The way his eyes took her in, he could tell she was downplaying the real reason behind why they both rushed out. Clearing his throat, he stood up facing her. "Katie, may I request one thing from you?"

Katie could feel the panic sinking deep into her stomach. What kind of request could he ask for? "What is it?" she answered. Feeling the extent of his eyes on her, she started fidgeting with her hands. "Be honest, with me and yourself. That's all I ask for. "

It felt like all ton of bricks had just whacked Katie upside the head. Nyx was starting to stir deep in the recess of Katie's mind, after being dormant for the past hour. Derek turned back to Addie and smiled. "You both have a wonderful evening." Derek turned around and walked past Katie, gently brushing past her towards the door and walked out without another word.

Katie could feel a current run the crown ofnher head down to her toes, shivering in response.

Addie stood up and stretched. "Oooh girl, the chemistry between the two of you is palpable." she giggled.

"Chemistry?" Katie rolled her eyes. Addie made her way to the two queen size beds and begun to pull back the duvet.

"The Alpha's Calling is usually what they call it." Addie sat her glasses down on the bedside table.

"I'm not sure what that is, exactly. I just know I become completely aware of myself and everything just fades out." Katie pondered.

"That's how it usually starts out, although in your case, it could be different. You're very powerful for an unmated female." Addie's response weighed on Katie. What exactly does that mean? What makes me different from any other unmated female?

Katie could feel Nyx smile through the bond. "Addie's right, you know.." Nyx gentle whispers clug to the self doubt rolling through her mind and squishing them into non-existence.

"Let's just get some rest and we can work on dealing with all this tomorrow." Addie said climbing into bed. A soft gasp sounded as Addie sprawled out over the bed. "These sheets..."

Katie crawled into her bed and snuggled down under the comforter. " These are soo going home with me, Momma needs some luxury in my life." Addie giggled as she pulled the comforter up.

Katie chuckled in response of her best friend, she was a sheet snob. She loved anything that was soft and high quality of a high thread count was her downfall. The pillows felt heavenly, gently cradling her head. Addie pushed a button on the remote and the lights slowly faded. The darkness settling around them, sleep claiming both of them in a matter of minutes.
