xenia’s POV
I slowly opened my eyes, but the sight before me made me scream. The driver had tried to avoid me, but in doing so, he had hit Vivian, who had been running after me.
“Vivian!”
I screamed her name and rushed toward her. “Vivian! Please, stay with me! Stay with me!” But she remained unconscious. There was blood everywhere, and my hands began shaking uncontrollably.
“Someone help her!” I cried, but my vision slowly blurred. The world around me began spinning, and before I could understand what was happening, everything went black.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
The sound of a monitor slowly pulled me back to consciousness. I opened my eyes and stared at the unfamiliar ceiling. My head felt foggy, and a drip was connected to my hand.
“How did I get here?” I whispered.
Then the memories came rushing back.
Vivian.
I suddenly tried to sit up. “What happened to my friend?” Pain shot through my body, forcing a gasp from my lips. The doctor quickly rushed to my side and helped me lie back down.
“Please, Madam. You need to relax.”
“Vivian,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “She was hurt. She was bleeding. Is she okay?”
The doctor gave me a reassuring smile. “Your friend is fine. Thankfully, someone got both of you to the hospital in time. She's in the next ward with her husband.”
I froze.
Her husband.
Was it Shane?
My heart sank. He was here, but he wasn't with me. He was with Vivian. Not once had he come to check on me. Not once had he asked if I was okay.
Was he really leaving me?
Tears slowly slipped down my cheeks as I stared at the ceiling. What was I to him? Was I just someone he could ignore whenever he wanted?
The doctor finished checking my drip and was about to leave when he suddenly stopped.
“Please, Madam, don't overwork yourself. It isn't healthy for you and the baby.”
I frowned. “The baby?”
The doctor looked at me, surprised. “Oh. I assumed you had already been informed.”
My heart began pounding. “Informed about what?”
He glanced at my chart before looking back at me.
“You're pregnant. Approximately two weeks.”
Everything stopped.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Pregnant?
The word echoed inside my head. I slowly placed a trembling hand over my stomach.
A baby.
My baby.
And I knew exactly who the father was.
Shane.
“Xenia, you are pregnant!”
I heard someone say. I turned toward the door and saw Stephen, Vivian's brother and my boyfriend.
My heart sank.
This day couldn't possibly get any worse.
But Stephen looked genuinely happy. He rushed toward me and hugged me tightly.
“Babe, we did it!” he said, excitement written all over his face. “My girl is pregnant!”
His voice drew the attention of everyone around us.
Including Shane.
“Xenia, you are pregnant?” someone asked.
I turned toward the voice and saw Shane standing there.
My head went blank.
Everything around me seemed to disappear. It felt like it was just the two of us.
He looked at me with betrayal in his eyes.
My heart broke.
He looked at Stephen, then back at me.
Without saying another word, he turned and walked away.
I wanted to tell him so badly. I wanted him to look at me with care. I wanted him to crave me the same way I craved him.
But everything just kept getting more complicated.
Stephen held my hand, snapping me back to reality.
“Babe, rest up, okay?”
He gently patted my head before walking away, leaving me alone.
I stared at the ceiling, hoping it held the answers to all my problems.
Then the doorknob clicked.
I turned toward the door.
Shane.
Seeing him made me strangely happy.
He walked inside, took a seat beside my bed, and said nothing.
The silence between us lasted for a long while until he finally broke it.
“So you were pregnant for Stephen, and you still put on that show in the office like you were scared to lose me?”
My heart sank.
“No, Shane. No, it's not like that. You don't understand anything.”
“Then make me understand, okay?” His voice was filled with hurt. “Make me understand because I can't believe you are treating me like this. You were cheating on me all this time.”
“Of course not, Shane!” I cried. “Of course not!”
Tears filled my eyes.
“The baby is yours.”
Shane froze.
For a few seconds, he simply stared at me.
“What?”
“The baby is yours,” I repeated, my voice shaking. “You're the father, Shane. I didn't know until the doctor told me.”
His expression changed immediately.
The anger disappeared from his face, replaced by shock.
“Then Stephen?”
“He doesn't know,” I whispered. “He thinks the baby is his.”
Shane lowered his head and ran a hand through his hair.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I didn't know,” I said through my tears. “And even if I had known, I was scared. I didn't know if you still wanted me.”
He looked at me for a long moment before reaching for my hand.
“I thought I had lost you.”
My lips trembled.
“I never wanted you to lose me.”
He squeezed my hand gently.
“I’m sorry.”
“So am I,” I whispered.
For the first time in a long while, I felt like I could breathe again.
I leaned toward him, and he pulled me into his arms. I closed my eyes and cried against his chest.
Then I suddenly remembered Vivian.
“Shane…”
He looked at me.
“What about Vivian?”
His expression changed.
He looked away and sighed deeply.
“Diana… Vivian lost the baby because of the accident.”
My heart dropped.
“What?”
“She lost the pregnancy,” he said quietly. “The doctors tried their best, but they couldn't save it.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“Oh God… Vivian.”
Shane held my hand.
“And there's something else. The doctors said her injuries were serious. They aren't sure if she'll be able to carry another pregnancy.”
I covered my mouth as I cried.
Vivian had been running after me when the accident happened.
Now she had lost her baby.
And there was a chance she might never be able to have another one.
“This happened because of me,” I whispered.
Shane pulled me closer.
“Xenia, it was an accident. You can't blame yourself.”
He pulled me into his arms, and I didn't fight it.
I closed my eyes and let myself rest against his chest.
For the first time that day, I felt safe.
