Hunters in the dark

clearing was suddenly too quiet. The silver light of the moon poured down through the opening in the trees, illuminating Lyra and Kaelen in its pale glow. But beyond the clearing, the forest had turned dark and watchful, the shadows between the trunks seeming deeper than they had been moments before. Kaelen’s body had gone completely still. Lyra stood behind him, her heart racing as she watched the muscles in his shoulders tighten beneath his shirt. He had sensed something. And Kaelen was never wrong about danger. “Stay behind me,” he repeated quietly. Lyra obeyed instantly, stepping closer to him as her eyes scanned the trees. The forest looked normal. But her instincts told her otherwise. Something was there. Watching. Waiting. Kaelen’s wolf was pressing hard against his mind now, claws scraping against the barrier of his control. Enemy. The scent had reached him a moment earlier. Faint but unmistakable. Strangers. Not just any wolves. His lip curled slightly as the realization settled in his chest. “They crossed the border,” he muttered. Lyra frowned behind him. “What?” Kaelen’s golden eyes narrowed toward the darkness. “The Blood Moon Pack.” The name made Lyra’s stomach drop. Even she had heard stories about them growing up. The Blood Moon wolves were known for brutality. They didn’t negotiate. They didn’t warn. When they wanted something, they took it. Usually by force. Lyra’s voice came out barely above a whisper. “Why would they come here?” Kaelen didn’t answer immediately. Instead, his gaze slowly swept across the tree line again. His senses sharpened. Listening. Smelling. Waiting. Then— A branch cracked loudly somewhere to their left. Kaelen reacted instantly. His hand shot out, grabbing Lyra’s wrist as he pulled her back several steps. “Show yourselves,” he called into the darkness, his voice carrying the unmistakable authority of an Alpha. For a moment nothing happened. Then the shadows shifted. Three figures stepped out from between the trees. They moved with the silent confidence of experienced hunters. All three were large men with hard expressions and scarred skin, their eyes gleaming faintly under the moonlight. Lyra’s breath caught. Their scent hit her a second later. Wild. Violent. Foreign. The lead wolf tilted his head slightly as he studied Kaelen. “So the rumors were true,” he said calmly. Kaelen’s jaw tightened. “You’re trespassing on Ashen Moon Pack territory.” The wolf smirked. “We noticed.” His eyes slid past Kaelen and landed on Lyra. A slow, satisfied grin spread across his face. “And there she is.” Kaelen’s entire body went rigid. Lyra instinctively stepped closer behind him. The stranger chuckled softly. “Relax, Alpha. We’re only here to confirm something.” Kaelen’s voice dropped dangerously low. “You confirmed it.” He took one step forward. “Now leave.” The three wolves didn’t move. Instead, the lead scout folded his arms. “You’re Kaelen, right?” Kaelen didn’t respond. “Alpha Draven sends his regards.” Lyra saw the way Kaelen’s eyes darkened at that name. Draven. The Alpha of the Blood Moon Pack. The scout’s gaze shifted back to Lyra. “So she’s the one.” Lyra felt something cold settle in her stomach. “The Moon-blessed Omega.” The words hit the clearing like a thunderclap. Kaelen’s wolf roared with fury inside his mind. “How do you know that?” Kaelen growled. The scout shrugged. “Information travels.” Lyra’s mind raced. Moon-blessed? They knew? Kaelen took another step forward, placing himself completely between Lyra and the strangers. “You’ve seen enough.” The scout laughed. “Oh, we definitely have.” He tilted his head toward Lyra again. “Though I have to admit… she doesn’t look very impressive.” The insult was deliberate. Kaelen’s control snapped. A deep, rumbling growl tore from his chest. “You’ve crossed into my territory, threatened my mate, and insulted my pack.” His golden eyes flashed with lethal warning. “You should have run when you had the chance.” The scouts exchanged amused glances. The second wolf cracked his neck lazily. “Are we supposed to be scared?” Kaelen’s smile was cold. “You will be.” The shift happened instantly. His body exploded into motion as bones cracked and rearranged. Muscles expanded. Dark fur burst through his skin. Within seconds, the massive black wolf stood where Kaelen had been. He was enormous. Larger than most Alpha wolves. His fur was as dark as midnight, swallowing the moonlight instead of reflecting it. And his golden eyes burned with pure fury. Lyra stared in awe. Even though she had seen Kaelen shift before, it was still breathtaking. The sheer power radiating from him was overwhelming. The scouts’ confidence faded slightly. “Damn,” one muttered. The lead wolf sighed. “Well… guess we’re doing this.” All three shifted at once. The clearing filled with the sounds of snapping bones and tearing fabric. Three massive wolves landed on the grass. But none of them matched Kaelen’s size. The black Alpha didn’t hesitate. He lunged first. The impact was brutal. His jaws slammed into the shoulder of the closest wolf, sending the enemy crashing into the ground with a yelp. The other two attacked immediately. Lyra backed away instinctively as the clearing erupted into chaos. Growls. Snarls. Flashes of teeth. The wolves clashed violently beneath the moonlight. Kaelen fought like a storm. Every movement was precise and lethal. He tore through the attackers with ruthless efficiency. One wolf tried to circle behind him— Kaelen whipped around and slammed his massive body into the attacker, sending him tumbling across the grass. But even Kaelen couldn’t watch every direction at once. The third scout suddenly broke away from the fight. And charged straight toward Lyra. Her eyes widened. She barely had time to react. The massive gray wolf lunged, jaws snapping toward her— Lyra screamed. And something inside her exploded. A burst of brilliant golden light erupted from her body. The energy shot outward in a powerful wave. The attacking wolf was thrown backward like a ragdoll, slamming into a tree with a sickening crack. The entire forest seemed to vibrate for a moment. Even Kaelen froze mid-attack. The clearing went silent again. The scouts stared at Lyra in shock. Golden energy flickered around her body for a few seconds before slowly fading away. Lyra stood trembling in the center of the clearing, her eyes wide with confusion. “I… I didn’t mean to—” The lead scout suddenly barked a laugh. “Well, I’ll be damned.” He shifted back into human form, wiping blood from his mouth. “It’s true.” He looked at Lyra with open fascination. “A real Moon-blessed Omega.” Kaelen stepped forward immediately, placing himself in front of her again. His black wolf towered over the scouts. The message was clear. Touch her again. And die. The lead scout held up his hands. “Relax, Alpha.” He nodded toward Lyra. “We came for information.” His grin widened. “And we got it.” Kaelen’s eyes burned with rage. “You’re leaving.” The scout shrugged. “Of course.” He glanced at his injured companions. “Let’s go.” The three wolves retreated slowly into the trees. But before disappearing into the darkness, the lead scout called back over his shoulder. “Oh, and Kaelen?” The Alpha didn’t respond. The scout chuckled. “Our Alpha is going to be very interested in her.” Lyra felt a chill run down her spine. “Tell Draven this,” Kaelen growled. “If he steps foot in my territory…” His wolf’s golden eyes flashed dangerously. “I’ll kill him.” The scout simply smiled. Then the three figures vanished into the forest. Silence returned to the clearing. Kaelen shifted back moments later, breathing heavily as he turned toward Lyra. She was still trembling slightly. “You’re hurt,” he said immediately. “I’m fine.” But her voice shook. Kaelen stepped closer, his eyes scanning her for injuries. “You released that power again.” Lyra nodded slowly. “It just… happened.” Kaelen ran a hand through his hair. This was bad. Very bad. If the Blood Moon Pack knew about Lyra’s abilities… They would come. Not with scouts. But with an army. And Kaelen knew one thing with absolute certainty. He would burn the entire forest to ashes before he let anyone take her. Far away in the mountains, Alpha Draven stood on a stone balcony overlooking the territory of the Blood Moon Pack. The scouts returned shortly before dawn. Draven listened quietly as they described everything. The golden light. The power. The Omega. When they finished, Draven leaned back in his chair slowly. A dangerous smile spread across his face. “A golden wolf,” he murmured. His eyes gleamed with excitement. “Send word to the war council.” The scout hesitated. “You’re planning an attack?” Draven stood and walked toward the edge of the balcony. Far in the distance, the forests of the Ashen Moon Pack stretched across the horizon. “No.” His smile widened. “Not an attack.” His voice turned dark. “A hunt.” And Lyra was the prize.
