It seemed impossible to sleep after the ceremony. The night was cold, but my mind, which was filled with an odd mix of hurt and curiosity, felt much colder. It had hurt to have Ronan reject me, but something wasn't quite right. He was with Lyra, but why? Why would he turn down his partner for something so important?
I couldn't stop thinking, and before I knew it, I was back at the wooded area where I'd seen Ronan and Lyra together. I might be able to find answers if I followed them. I was curious to find out why he would turn me down for someone like Lyra. What did he conceal?
The moon created long shadows on the ground, and the woodland was silent. I took care not to make any noise when I moved. I had to learn why my companion had treated me so disrespectfully, even though I knew it was dangerous. And how much power did this weird she-wolf possess over him?
After a few minutes, I noticed Ronan and Lyra conversing close to a tall tree-ringed clearing. I moved closer, hiding behind a huge tree trunk to listen to their whispered words.
"You know what needs to be done, Ronan." Even from a distance, I shuddered at the icy, authoritative tone of Lyra's voice. "You will carry out our plan if you wish to maintain your position."
Even though I couldn't see his expression, I could tell that Ronan was frustrated when he sighed. "I understand, Lyra. However, You underestimate how complicated it is. The connection
She yelled, "Forget the bond." It isn't anything. You must concentrate on the important things. Authority, command, etc. and controlling your adversaries. Or did you forget?
After a brief period of silence, I pushed myself closer to the tree and tried to understand what they were saying. Opponents? Command? What would they have planned?
With a tone that bordered on sadness, Ronan stated, "Melissa was never part of the plan." "She... she makes things more difficult."
Lyra laughed. She is frail. Not much of a threat. You should be relieved to get rid of her if anything. A strong Luna who can support you without putting you back is what you need.
My heart sank as I clutched the tree's bark. She was speaking about me as if I were a problem that needed to be solved or some worthless thing.
Ronan's tone grew softer. "Lyra, it's not as easy as you make it seem."
"Oh, but it is," Lyra said in a low, menacing voice. Keep in mind that you owe me. Ronan, I have all the cards here. Additionally, your priceless bundle will pay the price if you break our deal.
I felt cold. He was somehow under Lyra's control. How could she be so strong that even Lithamoon Pack's strong Alpha, Ronan, had to bow down to her?
As I attempted to reconstruct their conversation, my heart was pounding. Their statements were ambiguous, suggesting something sinister and perverse, but I still wanted to understand. Additionally, Ronan sounded imprisoned and very powerless under Lyra's influence.
The snap reverberated through the clearing when I stepped on a twig, just as I was about to lean in closer.
The heads of Lyra and Ronan whirled around.
"Have you heard it?" Lyra surveyed the trees, her eyes narrowing. I was certain they could hear my heart beating so loudly.
Ronan stepped toward the trees and said, "Stay here." I pressed myself against the hard bark and held my breath, hoping he wouldn't notice me as he went right by.
Angrily, Lyra's voice rang out. "Find someone if they are there. We cannot allow anyone to listen in.
Before they could catch me, I dived low and crawled under the trees. As I slipped out of the clearing, my heart was in my throat and every sound seemed to reverberate. I had just discovered something they wanted to keep secret, therefore I couldn't be seen just now.
I was able to hide behind a dense shrub and keep a sufficient distance between us. However, I could still hear their voices from that distance.
"Ronan, we're by ourselves," Lyra yelled. "We cannot afford for anyone to learn of our partnership."
"I understand," Ronan shot back. However, Lyra, don't threaten me. Remember that I'm still the Alpha in this situation, but I'll do whatever it takes for the pack.
With her eyes shining in the moonlight, Lyra grinned. "If you don't fulfil your end of the agreement, it won't last long."
What sort of deal might they be discussing? I strained to hear more, holding my breath.
"Remember, Ronan," she added in a menacing tone, "I'll make sure everyone knows your… little secret if you don't remain faithful to me."
My heart was racing. A secret? What could be so awful that Ronan would allow Lyra to manipulate him and defy his mate? I needed to know.
Just as I was going to disappear in silence, I sensed that someone was watching me. I turned to see Lyra standing a few steps away, her eyes icy and ferocious.
She crossed her arms and sneered, "Well, well." "Look who's here, listening in like a tiny rodent."
My mouth became parched. "I... I wasn't... I mean, I simply.
Towering over me, Lyra took a step closer. Melissa, what were you doing? Are you spying on your Alpha and his company?
Ronan's face hardened, masking the momentary softening of his expression.
Lyra didn't hold out for a response. She replied in a low, menacing voice, "You should avoid getting involved in things that don't affect you." "You realize that you are nothing here? Feeble and ineffective. And let's just say that it won't work out well for you if you get involved.
I forced myself to stand up straight despite my knees trembling and swallowed hard. Silently, I declared, "Ronan is my mate." "I have a right to know what's happening."
Lyra laughed sarcastically. "Your partner? Avoid making me chuckle. Remember how Ronan rejected you? He no longer cares about you.
I looked at Ronan, looking for some indication that he was interested. However, he avoided looking into my eyes.
Lyra leaned near and murmured, "Listen, Melissa," her voice a perilous whisper. "I'll turn your life into a nightmare if you don't avoid Ronan. You'll be sorry you ever tried to become involved.
Even though her remarks made me shiver, I was able to maintain my composure. "Lyra, what are you concealing? How much power do you have over him?
A sneer played on her lips as she instantly collected herself after her eyes flared with wrath. "Don't you want to know? However, for little children, some things are better left alone. I advise you to keep that in mind.
She gave Ronan one last scowl and turned on her heel, gesturing for him to follow. He hesitated for a second, his eyes darting to mine. However, he turned away and trailed Lyra into the darkness.
As I watched them vanish, questions and anxieties raced through my head. What did Lyra intend to do? And why did she manipulate Ronan in this weird way?
One thing became evident to me as I stood there by myself in the dark: Lyra wasn't only interested in Ronan. She had a much larger goal in mind, one that might have an impact on the entire group.
Even though I knew I wanted answers, Lyra's stern admonition rang in my head. What was her true desire? And how far would she go to obtain it?
