Chapter 11:The Last Conflict

My heart pounding, I slipped stealthily into the pack's area in the cold night air. I couldn't wait any longer, but I had to be careful not to be noticed. I sensed that my powers were powerful enough now. And I was required by Ronan. I spotted him sitting by himself, leaning against the trunk of the big oak tree where we used to meet, in the shadows. Even though his eyes were open, they were so lost and lifeless. Seeing him in this state, under the dark influence of Lyra, broke my heart. "Ronan..." I moved closer and whispered. He turned his head slightly and squinted at the sound of my voice. He seemed to be looking through me, seeing nothing, yet his eyes did not contact mine. I inhaled deeply while putting my hand on his shoulder. It's me, Melissa, and Ronan. Get up. Please. Something flared in his eyes for a moment. "M... Melissa?" he whispered. There was a faint echo of the Ronan I knew in his voice. "Yes, Ronan. "I'm here," I muttered. "I returned to get you." But then I felt a shudder go through me as a chilly laugh reverberated through the trees. Lyra emerged from the darkness with a smug smile on her face. She hissed, "Well, look who's come crawling back." "Little Melissa believes she can act heroically." I felt the power surge inside me and tightened my hands. "Lyra, I won't let you keep him in this state. You can no longer control him. With a smirk growing across her face, she lifted an eyebrow. "Really? And why do you believe you can take any action? I stepped forward, meeting her gaze directly. "Because I possess something that you lack." I have strength and love, and I don't hesitate to use them. I then extended my arm, concentrating all of my strength on Ronan and breaking through the heavy, shadowy grip Lyra had put on him. Even though I could sense her force resisting, I persisted. I closed my eyes, allowing the inner light to intensify until I felt the darkness completely dissipate. Ronan's eyes widened in surprise as he gasped. Dazed, he glanced around before focusing on me. Melissa …? I smiled slightly at him, feeling a wave of comfort. "Yes, Ronan. It's me. You are at liberty. However, our moment was brief. Dark energy swirled around Lyra's fingers as her face contorted with rage and she raised her fists. "You believe you can simply enter this place and retrieve him? I will not allow you to! She flung her hands forward, launching a burst of dark energy directly at me before I could respond. I felt the force strike me as I braced myself, yet my inner strength kept me upright. Lyra's confidence faltered as her eyes grew wide. "How are you doing this, exactly?" I straightened up and looked her in the eye. "Because I'm not the weak girl you believed me to be." I've discovered my strength, and I will never again allow you to harm Ronan or anybody else. Her eyes flashed with anger as she hissed and stepped back. She spat and raised her hands once more, saying, "Then let's see what you've got." I sensed her dark force pressing against mine as a furious energy exploded between us. However, I resisted, allowing my strength to increase and giving her my best effort. The trees trembled all around us, and the tension in the air crackled. Ronan staggered back and watched in disbelief as we engaged in combat. He said, "Be careful, Melissa," but I didn't let that divert me. It was this. Now I had to stop. Dark energy glowed in Lyra's hands as she lunged at me. I spun around to face her and dodged, pushing her away with a wave of light. She stumbled and gave me a scared and angry look. Her voice was shaking as she shouted, "Who are you?" "This power shouldn't be able to happen." I felt the strength coursing through me as I held my ground. "Lyra, you were mistaken about me. You have no idea how strong I am. Her countenance shifted, and for a second I feared she would give up. As she stepped forward, a ruthless grin appeared on her face. "Oh, Melissa," she replied in a quiet, even derisive tone. "You truly don't know who you are, do you?" A chill took hold of my gut. "What are you discussing?" Lyra laughed, and I couldn't quite place the sparkle in her eyes. Have you ever heard from your family? Or did they conceal it in the hopes that you wouldn't discover it? I scowled as terror and bewilderment blended. "What do you mean?" She c****d her head, staring at me with an odd sense of sympathy. "Melissa, you're no ordinary wolf. You come from one of the oldest families in the world. Your veins are filled with the blood of the first wolves. My head was spinning as I gazed at her. The initial wolves? It was just not feasible. "You're telling lies." Her smile widened as she challenged, "Oh, am I?" "So, why do you think you got these abilities all of a sudden? Not even I, with all my wizardry, can match such powers. Do you believe that to be a coincidence? With a weird feeling of fear, I gulped. Is it possible? Is it possible that I am... different? Lyra giggled, obviously taking pleasure in my bewilderment. "You're correct, Melissa. You are unique. More unique than you realize. You will never really belong here because of this. The pack will always be afraid of you, even if they are currently following you. Because they secretly know that you are something they will never comprehend. Her remarks were like a kick to the gut, and I briefly experienced a wave of uncertainty. Was she correct? Was I truly that different? Then I thought of Ronan, the way he had trusted me and the way he had gazed at me. I felt certain that I was here to defend my pack, regardless of what Lyra said. And there was nothing that could stop me. I looked into her eyes and inhaled deeply. "Perhaps you are correct. Perhaps I am unique. However, nothing changes as a result. To keep the ones I love safe, I'm still here. I will also prevent you from harming them. Dark energy crackled around Lyra as her face contorted with wrath and she lifted her hands once more. She snarled, "Then get ready to lose, little wolf." "Because I refuse to surrender easily." I felt the entire weight of her might rushing into me as she screamed fiercely and pounced at me. However, I was prepared this time. My strength increased as I pushed back, bringing light to her darkness. The earth trembled beneath us, and I sensed the energy intensifying until it was nearly unbearable. But I didn't let her win, so I hung on. I finally shoved her back, sending her crashing to the ground with a final surge of energy. Her face was pallid as she stared up at me in shock. Her voice was shaky as she muttered, "You... you can't." I moved closer as an odd serenity descended about me. "It's over, Lyra," I said. "You don't need to struggle any longer. Simply let go. She appeared to be listening for a second, but then her face twisted in anger and she screamed and lunged at me once more. Using all my strength, I raised my hand and sent her flying back, her body crashing to the earth with a final flash of light. The clearing fell silent, and I inhaled deeply as I felt the weight of everything descend upon me. It was done. I was victorious. I was overcome with relief as I stood there, but I couldn't get rid of the feeling that something was still lacking. I felt a peculiar uneasiness as Lyra's words replayed in my head. The initial wolves are An old tradition... Is it true? For the first time, I pondered who I truly was as I gazed down at my hands and felt the power pulsating within me. I was certain that my adventure was far from ending as I stood there with questions racing through my head. This was just the start.
