Chapter 7: Revealing Loyalty

As I returned to Ronan's cottage, the morning light came through the trees. This time, my heart was racing from impatience rather than terror. How could he allow Lyra to exert such influence over him? I needed him to see that she was up to something sinister. When I got closer to his cabin, I noticed him standing at the doorway with his arms folded and a serious expression on his face. He scowled when he saw me. "Why are you here, Melissa?" His voice was colder than normal as he asked. I inhaled deeply as I collected my thoughts. "We need to talk, Ronan." He sighed deeply, obviously not feeling well. "How about?" I looked him in the eye and stated firmly, "About Lyra." "Why do you allow her to manipulate you? Ronan, she's dangerous. I have witnessed some awful things. His eyes narrowed as he tensed up. His voice was low as he warned, "Melissa, stay out of my affairs." "You have no business dealing with this." I refused to back down and shook my head. "If you're endangering the pack and yourself, that's my business. I can't just watch helplessly. His expression hardened as he crossed his arms. "And what knowledge do you believe you possess regarding any of this?" “More than you think,” I said, presenting a tiny scrap of paper I had discovered that contained information about Lyra's interactions with a competitor pack. "I discovered this. Lyra has ties to Ronan, the enemy pack. She doesn't support us. Ronan didn't glance at the page, but his eyes darted. With a contemptuous tone, he stated, "That doesn't prove anything." "There is nothing wrong with Lyra." I moved closer as my annoyance increased. "Are you blind? Ronan, you're being used by her! You must realize the reality; I'm not sure what kind of hold she has on you. He tightened his jaw and turned aside. "You're not getting it. Lyra has spent years with this bundle. She wouldn't ever turn on us. So why does her chamber contain emblems of black magic? What made me discover your necklace there? I applied pressure, attempting to penetrate his barrier of denial. "Don't you think any of this is odd?" His shoulders were stiff as he peered down. "Melissa, you shouldn't have gone there. You don't know what you're up against. I recoiled in shock at what he said. He was protecting her, not merely defending her. Though I knew I couldn't give up, my heart fell. "Listen to me, Ronan. She's playing tricks on you. She was talking to herself about controlling you, and I heard it. She is utilizing black magic to gain power because she wants it. For a little moment, he looked at me with a conflicted expression. He shook his head, nevertheless. Melissa, this has progressed sufficiently. You're using your imagination excessively. "Imagination?" Anger caused my face to flush. Ronan, this isn't simply a story. Your stubbornness prevents you from seeing that this is real. His voice was flat as he turned away once more. "Don't bother, Melissa. I am accountable for this, not you. "All right," I murmured, my annoyance exploding. "But don't claim I didn't try to warn you when it's too late." I turned around and walked away, my heart heaving with disappointment. It hurt more than I could express because he was denying the reality. I made the decision to go for a walk in the woods later that night to decompress. I needed to calm down and come up with another strategy to reach Ronan. However, I heard anxious, whispered voices close by as I was walking. Wondering, As I listened, I slipped closer and crouched behind a tree. "Everything is going as planned," Lyra stated in a chilly, contented voice. "Ronan will eventually get in line. He is unaware of what is about to happen. I felt a chill go through me. She was scheming to harm him. A deep, menacing voice that of a man spoke up. What if he doesn't? If he doesn't want to? Lyra chuckled softly. We'll then take advantage of his flaws. We are both aware of his greatest treasure: his priceless pack. I'll force him to decide between being loyal to them and to me. In any case, I will have the necessary power. I was feeling nauseous and angry. They intended to harm Ronan and turn his allegiance against him. What prevented him from seeing this? I remained concealed until they disappeared into the darkness, at which point I hastily returned to the pack house. My mind was racing, and my hands were shaking. Ronan needed to comprehend what was going on, so I had to explain it to him again. I rushed inside the cabin as soon as I arrived, my heart racing. Ronan looked up, shocked that I had returned so quickly. "What are you doing here, Melissa?" He frowned as he asked. To regain my composure, I inhaled deeply. I just heard Lyra talking to one of her supporters. Ronan, they're planning to harm you. They intend to take advantage of your devotion to the pack. You must realize that she is deceiving you. With a groan, he rubbed his temples as though he were worn out. "Enough, Melissa. I'm over this. "But that's the reality!" I demanded, raising my voice. To gain control of the pack, they will exploit your weaknesses. She only wants power; she doesn't give a damn about you. His eyes were frigid, and his face was harsh as he turned to face me. Melissa, you're not understanding. I don't need your advice or assistance. This is my pack, and it is my duty. "But Ronan, she's going to ruin you!" Desperation tugged at me as I spoke. "Why are you unable to see that?" Because you're mistaken!” he yelled, his voice resonating throughout the cabin. "You don't know what you're discussing. You shouldn't be meddling in my affairs. Even if the statements were harsh, I refused to back down. "My only goal is to keep you safe." His face was filled with irritation and rage as he shook his head. Melissa, I don't require your protection. You shouldn't be involved in this. Go away from me. Tears pricked the corners of my eyes at the finality in his voice. However, I wasn't going to give up so quickly. I said gently and steadily, "I'll protect you if you won't protect yourself." "I won't let her ruin you, even if you hate me for it." Ronan's expression softened for a second before he dismissed me and turned away. Melissa, just get out of here. I'd rather not see you. I swallowed the lump that had risen in my throat, determined to remain strong. I had attempted to persuade him of the truth, but he was too arrogant and obstinate. I said, "All right," and moved to the door. However, Ronan, I'm not giving up on you. I will continue to battle for you whether you like it or not. I took a deep, trembling breath when the chilly night air struck my face as I stepped outside. Even after I had tried everything, he would not listen. I wouldn't let Lyra get away with her plans, even if he shoved me away. With a tremendous resolution in my heart, I turned around and took one final look at the cabin. Although Lyra may believe she has triumphed, she has yet to face her opponent. Seeing her destroy the person I cared about was not something I was going to tolerate. I made up my mind and headed back into the darkness with that thought in mind. Even though Ronan would never understand why, I was determined to find a way to keep him safe.
