Chapter Six: The First Hybrid

1468 Words
The courtyard did not breathe. For several long seconds after Davies spoke, the world seemed to freeze in place. You’re the second. The words echoed across the moonlit stone like a curse. No one moved. No one spoke. Dozens of vampires stood along the courtyard walls, their crimson eyes flicking between Lucien and me with sharp, predatory curiosity. And Lucien… Lucien Draven was staring at me. Not the way he had earlier—calculating, cold, mildly intrigued. This was different. This time his gaze felt heavier. Dangerous. Like a blade hovering over a thread. My pulse hammered in my ears. “What does that mean?” I demanded, my voice sharper than I intended. Davies didn’t look at me. He kept his eyes on Lucien. “You’ve been searching for answers for centuries,” the hunter said calmly. “Studying hybrid blood. Experimenting. Building theories.” Lucien didn’t deny it. “You’re wasting my time.” Davies smiled faintly. “No.” He nodded toward me. “You’ve been chasing the wrong origin.” A ripple of tension spread through the courtyard. Lucien’s siblings shifted uneasily. The silver-haired brother—Adrian—stepped forward slightly. “Careful, human,” he warned. “You’re standing in the center of a vampire kingdom.” Davies glanced around at the surrounding predators. “I noticed.” Then his eyes returned to Lucien. “You believe your existence was an accident.” Lucien’s voice was quiet. “Continue.” Davies folded his arms slowly. “You weren’t the first hybrid ever created.” A whisper of movement passed through the watching vampires. Lucien’s crimson eyes flickered once. “Then enlighten me.” Davies tilted his head toward me. “The first hybrid was her.” My stomach dropped. “That’s impossible,” I said immediately. But no one looked at me. Lucien’s gaze remained locked on the hunter. “You’re making a very bold claim.” Davies shrugged. “It’s not a claim.” “It’s history.” The silence deepened. Lucien took a slow step forward. Moonlight traced the sharp angles of his face. “If you’re lying,” he said quietly, “you will regret it.” Davies smiled faintly. “Oh, I’m sure I will.” Then he said something that made my chest tighten. “But you already know I’m not.” Lucien stopped walking. For the first time since I had seen him, uncertainty flickered across his expression. Just for a moment. Then it vanished. “Explain.” Davies’ eyes finally moved to me. And something in his expression changed. Relief. Regret. Something heavier. “You don’t remember,” he said quietly. My stomach twisted. “Remember what?” Davies studied my face for several seconds. Then he shook his head slightly. “Of course you don’t.” Lucien’s voice cut through the tension. “Hunter.” Davies didn’t break eye contact with me. “She was supposed to be dead.” A murmur rippled through the courtyard. My heart stumbled. “What?” Davies finally looked back at Lucien. “Twenty-two years ago,” he said, “a supernatural experiment nearly destroyed an entire continent.” Lucien’s expression sharpened. “What experiment?” Davies’ voice turned colder. “The one that created her.” My breath caught. “That’s insane.” But Davies ignored me. Lucien’s siblings exchanged tense glances. Adrian spoke quietly. “Lucien… there are records of something like this.” Lucien’s head snapped toward him. “You’ve never mentioned it.” “Because it was considered a myth.” Davies let out a quiet laugh. “Convenient.” Lucien’s eyes burned now. “Explain. Everything.” Davies took a slow breath. “Twenty-two years ago, a secret coalition of vampire elders and rogue werewolf alphas attempted something impossible.” Lucien’s voice dropped. “Hybrid creation.” “Yes.” Davies nodded toward me again. “They succeeded.” Cold dread spread through my chest. “No,” I whispered. But Davies continued. “They created a child who carried both bloodlines perfectly.” Lucien’s jaw tightened. “A stable hybrid.” “The first one.” My legs suddenly felt weak. “That’s not possible.” Davies’ voice softened slightly. “The problem was… the child was too powerful.” Lucien’s eyes darkened. “How powerful?” Davies’ answer came quietly. “Powerful enough to kill every scientist involved in the experiment.” The courtyard erupted in whispers. My vision blurred. “That’s a lie.” Davies shook his head slowly. “The facility burned to the ground.” Lucien stared at me again. Slow. Thoughtful. “You’re saying…” Davies finished the sentence. “She survived.” Silence swallowed the courtyard again. My heart pounded harder with every second. “This is insane,” I said. Davies’ gaze softened slightly. “They erased the evidence.” Lucien’s voice turned dangerously quiet. “Why?” Davies answered immediately. “Because they were terrified.” Lucien’s eyes flickered. “Of a child?” Davies shook his head. “Of what she might become.” The words settled like ice in my chest. Lucien studied me again. Longer this time. Then he spoke slowly. “You’re suggesting she lived twenty-two years without anyone realizing what she is.” Davies nodded. “She was hidden.” “Where?” Davies’ eyes met mine again. “In a werewolf pack.” The courtyard fell silent again. Lucien’s gaze sharpened. “Moonshadow.” Davies nodded once. “Yes.” My stomach twisted violently. “That’s impossible,” I said. But my voice sounded weaker now. Lucien was still watching me. And the look in his eyes had changed again. It wasn’t curiosity anymore. It was realization. “You couldn’t shift,” he murmured. My chest tightened. The memory hit me like a wave. Every full moon. Every failed attempt. Every whispered insult from my pack. Lucien continued quietly. “They thought you were defective.” My throat felt dry. “Yes.” Lucien’s voice turned colder. “Because you weren’t a wolf.” My heart skipped. “You were something else entirely.” Davies nodded. “Exactly.” Lucien took another step toward me. Slow. Careful. Like approaching a wild animal. And suddenly I realized something terrifying. He wasn’t looking at me like prey anymore. He was looking at me like a discovery. “Interesting,” he whispered. I took a step back. “Don’t say that.” But Lucien ignored me. His mind was racing now. I could see it in his eyes. “All this time,” he murmured. “Searching for answers.” Davies spoke quietly. “And now you’ve found them.” Lucien stopped walking. His gaze lifted back to the hunter. “You said she was supposed to be dead.” Davies nodded. “After the facility burned, everyone assumed she died in the fire.” Lucien’s voice turned sharp. “But she didn’t.” Davies looked at me again. “No.” Lucien’s eyes darkened. “Someone took her.” Davies nodded slowly. “Yes.” Lucien’s voice dropped. “Who?” The hunter’s expression changed. For the first time, uncertainty flickered in his eyes. “That,” he said quietly, “is the part I don’t know.” Silence returned. Lucien looked back at me again. His gaze was intense now. Almost hungry. “You were born from an experiment.” My stomach twisted. “No.” “But you survived.” “I don’t believe you.” Lucien tilted his head slightly. “Belief is irrelevant.” His crimson eyes gleamed. “Evidence is not.” Before I could respond— A sudden wave of energy rippled through my body. Sharp. Violent. Silver light burst beneath my skin again. Brighter than before. The courtyard gasped. Lucien’s eyes widened slightly. “Fascinating.” The power surged through my veins like lightning. My vision blurred. The ground beneath my feet cracked. Stone fractured outward in a web of glowing silver lines. Vampires staggered back. Even Lucien stepped away. Davies stared at me in shock. “That’s new.” The silver light grew stronger. Burning. Wild. Uncontrolled. And suddenly I realized something terrifying. I wasn’t in control of it. Lucien’s voice cut through the chaos. “Lira.” But I couldn’t answer. The power inside me was growing. Spreading. Awakening. And somewhere deep in the castle— Something ancient began to stir. Lucien felt it instantly. His head snapped toward the towering castle behind us. Adrian frowned. “What is that?” Lucien’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Impossible.” Another tremor shook the ground. But this one didn’t come from me. It came from beneath the castle. Something deep underground had awakened. And whatever it was… It was responding to me.
