Chapter 2

Christina's POV : While everyone sets up for my party tonight May and I decide to stay in my room until it's time to get ready. "What if it hurts?", May asks. "well it's going to hurt, May. But it's fine I heard after a couple shifts it stops hurting". she flops down on my bed dramatically and says, "but you know I get nervous about these things". I snort, " good thing I'm the one that will be in pain then huh" we both laugh and she nods thankfully. Her birthday isn't for another two months. She rolls over and her shirt lifts.I see a bruise around her stomach. "hey" I said softly. She hums melodically in response. "did I kick you that hard in training?" I say putting my hand up to her bruise. She quickly pulls her shirt down and scoots away from my hand. "Of course not silly. You would never actually hurt me, I'm an alpha" she smiles. It's a smile I've seen a million times but it doesn't seem right. "I can almost beat you so don't be so sure..." The room goes silent as I work up some nerve. "What happened?" She sits up on her elbows and shrugs her shoulders. "You know how dad is". I curl up next to her and hold her hand. "Yea", I say under my breath, "I guess I do". We all know how the alpha has been since his Luna's death. May and I were 10 and it hit the whole pack hard, but the alpha harder. She was truly the light of his life. Before our pack was vibrant and had parties for every occasion. The Luna made every one in the pack feel at home and loved. She had such a beautiful aura that thankfully her daughter inherited. Looking in as a child I could see the physical and mental change our Alpha went through but I had no idea how bad it was until a year after the Luna passed. May started skipping a lot more school and spending less time around other people. My father would tell my mother about the Alpha's drinking and his temper when he thought I had gone to bed. We are all proud of our pack and our once great alpha but our alliances aren't as strong and our people less protected than ever. We don't hold any of that against him but I am resentful of the way he treats May. Thankfully unless the Alpha takes a chosen mate and has a son, May will be next in line for the title and I know without a doubt she will be an amazing leader to our pack. --- A couple hours later, May and I are in the bathroom doing our makeup and hair. Actually May is doing my makeup and hair since I truthfully don't know where to start. No matter how I feel about myself she always makes me shine bright when she's in a makeover mood. she has her silky blonde hair up in curlers and is singing off key to some new Katy Perry song as she swishes away at my eyelids. Being the beta's daughter has always lent me a certain amount of respect from the pack kids but I never had any friends until this bright, girly, bubbly creature sauntered into my life and declared me her best friend. People have always found us an odd pair. I like tattoos, she likes spray tans. I like alternative rock, she likes pop. I like movies, she likes hiking. And so on and so forth. "open!", she squeals in her excited voice. I open my eyes and stare at myself in the mirror in shock. This is not the same dull girl from this morning that's for sure. she gave me cat eyeliner and golden hues over my eyelids. Even my highlight is beautifully golden and meshes well with my skin tone, my lips a deep purple. "Wow". What else could I even say. She jumps up and down and runs out of the room. Confused I stand up as she runs back in with a garment bag. "Oh don't do this to me May!", I groaned out. she tsked at me and gave me her signature puppy dog eyes. "honestly Chris you can't let me spend my valuable time and energy on your hair and makeup and NOT wear a dress. That by the way," she pouts, " I bought just for you. My best friend". Well she really had me with that one. "Okay. Okay." I give in, as usual. I really am such a pushover with her and Owen, I swear. she unzips the bag and shows me the most beautiful gown I've ever seen. It is forest green with a plunging neck line and see through sleeves. It flows out elegantly to the floor. "Are you sure you don't want to wear that?" I say with thankfulness written all over my face. She huffs, " I did your make up to match it so no. Absolutely not. Put it on right now!" Once I have the dress on I walk out of my room to see my family. They ooh and aah at May's work and she takes a bow. "The party is going to start soon so let's head down!", my mother exclaims after taking way too many pictures. Owen grabs my hand and I look down at him. "I know I'm only five but you don't have a boyfriend so dad says I can be your escort". Dad's laugh booms by my other side as we walk outside. I smell the fresh air and the scents of food and drinks mixing together. "let's party!"
