Public Rivals

CHAPTER 4 📖 The press conference room was a storm before it even began. Cameras clicked, microphones tested, reporters whispered. The world loved a showdown and tonight, they would get one. Seraphina stepped up to the podium, calm and poised, her black tailored suit a sharp contrast against the sea of reporters. Every eye was on her. Every lens focused on her. She had learned quickly: appearances could be weapons. And then she saw him. Lucien Moretti. Seated in the front row, eyes narrowed, lips pressed in that infuriatingly calm line. Watching,Waiting,Judging. A thrill ran through her, not of fear but of power. He had underestimated her once. Never again. “Ladies and gentlemen,” she began, voice steady, carrying across the room, “thank you for coming. Today, I want to discuss the future of Vale Industries.” Murmurs rose. Lucien’s presence made them louder, sharper. “Vale Industries?” Lucien’s voice cut in, low and smooth, carrying a weight of ownership, authority. “Ms. Vale, aren’t you aware your company no longer holds the influence it once did?” Seraphina’s eyes flicked to him, unblinking. A slow smile curved her lips not friendly, but dangerous. “I’m aware, Mr. Moretti,” she replied evenly, “which is precisely why I’m here. Influence isn’t inherited. It’s earned. And I intend to earn it back strategically, efficiently, and publicly.” Lucien leaned back, steepling his fingers. “I hope you understand, Ms.Vale, that influence often comes with responsibility and consequences for missteps.” The room seemed to hold its breath. Seraphina’s pulse remained steady, but internally, she counted every second, every word, every glance. She couldn’t let him see the flicker of fear couldn’t let him suspect Adrian. “Consequences are exactly what I plan to turn to my advantage,” she said, voice calm but razor sharp. “While some people rely on brute force, others rely on strategy. I happen to prefer strategy.” A click of a camera. Another flash. The reporters scribbled notes furiously. Lucien’s jaw twitched. A small movement, but she noticed. He hadn’t expected this. He hadn’t expected her to stand so unshakable. The tension was electric. Then came the question she had anticipated the bait, set to expose weakness. “Ms.Vale, will Vale Industries be seeking partnerships with Moretti Enterprises in the near future?” The room leaned in. Every eye on her. Every camera focused. Seraphina let a pause stretch a strategic, deliberate pause. “Yes,” she said at last, measured. “If Mr. Moretti is willing to negotiate on fair terms. And by fair, I mean terms that respect both parties equally.” Lucien’s eyes darkened, a storm brewing behind his calm exterior. “Fair terms,” he repeated softly. “I suppose we’ll see about that.” A murmur ran through the room. Reporters sensed the tension, the history, the unspoken war between these two titans. And then she ended the conference with her final move. “Before we conclude,” she said, smiling faintly, “I’d like to remind everyone that even the smallest player can turn the tables when underestimated.” She turned gracefully, her heels clicking on the floor as she exited the podium. Cameras flashed. Reporters whispered. And in the midst of it all, Lucien remained where he was, silent, unbroken but inside, a storm raged. He knew one thing for certain: this was no longer the girl who had disappeared five years ago. This woman Seraphina Vale was a force. And she had Adrian. As Seraphina walked out of the room, she felt a hand brush her shoulder light, but deliberate. Lucien’s voice, low, dangerous: “Remember, Ms. Vale… I’m always watching.” Her pulse spiked. Her walls were tested. And somewhere deep inside, she realized hiding Adrian was about to become far more dangerous than she had ever imagined.
