Everything seemed to be going okay, we hadn’t seen Cameron since, which was good. My Aunty Kathy had come over for the weekend, we don’t seen her often, Kathy was the only one out our family that kept in contact and made an effort to see us.
Kathy was minding us for a few hours so mum could have a break, Mum deserved a break. She had been working long hours and working over the weekends. I was nervous about her running into Cameron while she was out alone. She had reassured me she wasn’t going near the pub, because she was always worried about seeing him. I gave her a hug and told her to enjoy her night.
“Aright Pete, go grab Monopoly, I’m going to sen you and squirt broke!” Aunty Kathy said,
Squirt was the nickname she had given Harry, because he was little for his age. We spent the night playing games and watching movie. Harry and I loved when she looked after us. She spoilt us with chocolate, lollies, popcorn and plenty of cuddles. The night went quick, and before we knew it we all passed out.
Waking up the next morning. I went and made myself breakfast while Aunty Kath had a coffee and smoke out on the verandah. We were letting Mum sleep in because she was out most of the night. We were sound asleep and never heard her come home.
Ten o’clock came around, and Mum still hadn’t woke up. So I decided to go check on her. I opened her door and couldn’t believe my eyes- Cameron was in bed with Mum! He was laying there cuddling my mother! I felt sick in the stomach, why the hell was he her?! I snuck over and stood beside her, and gave her a little shake,
“Mum, Mum, What is he doing here?” I whispered, I didn’t mean to sound angry. But I was. I was angry, I was confused, and most of all I was hurt. How could Mum bring him back her, after what he done to me! To her!
She slowly opened her eyes and groaned at me,
“Its okay Pete, don’t worry. Cam and me ran into each other last night. We sorted everything out, his really sorry about what happened.”She had her eyes closed again while she was talking to me. I could smell the alcohol of her breath. She was still drunk. I don’t know why she had to drink when she was with Cameron. She never drunk while she was with Dad.
I stood there speechless, I didn’t know what I was supposed too say to her, I wanted to scream and yell, but I also wanted to cry. Then I noticed Cameron’s dark eyes were wide open. He was glaring straight at me. I felt my mouth go dry, yet it felt like I had a massive lump at the back my throat that I couldn’t swallow.
“We will talking about it later baby.I’ll get up soon Bub. Go watch Television with Aunty Kath” Mum mumbled.
Cameron was still staring at me with a smart ass grin on his face. For some reason I lift my hand up and gave him the rude finger and death stared him. I mouthed the words “Get f****d”. I wanted him to think I wasn’t scared of him- even though I was. He raised his closed fist and lifted it up in a threatening manor, like he was going to punch me in the face. As tough as I tried to make myself look, I was scared. I was only a kid, I just wanted to protect my mum, and my brother. She deserved better then Cameron.
I stormed out of the room, and slammed the door,
“What wrong Peter?” Aunty Kathy asked,
“She brung him back here! After what he done to me! There in bed together!” I blurted it out sobbing,
“What!?!” Aunty Kathy said shocked. She threw the tea towel down and stopped washing up. She stormed down the hallway and barged in Mum’s room.
Aunty Kathy and mum had a big fight, I didn’t want to hear it, so I took Harry outside and we played on the swing set. I still couldn’t believe Mum had let Cameron back into our lives after what he had done.
“His not going to hurt again is he Pete?” Harry asked while I was pushing him on the swing.
“I bloody hope not squid” I relied,
“Hey! Only Aunt Kathy calls me that!” He said upset at me,
“I know” I laughed at him,
Aunty Kathy stormed out the front door, with her overnight bag in her hand. She came over to Harry and me and said Goodbye and gave us a big hug and kiss.
Mum was standing at the door with her dressing gown on,
“I love you Lara, your my little sister, and I will always be here for you. But not while your with him.” Aunty Kath said firmly but softly, before she walked away.
Mum didn’t say anything, she went back inside and slammed the door behind her. Harry and me spent the day playing in my room with the door locked or outside until Cameron left.
