Chapter Four

1328 Words
Within a couple months Cameron had pushed his way into our lives. First he conveniently happened to be walking past our house while we were moving things into the house, and unpacking. Then he started turning up to random places while we were there. Shopping centres, parks. Everywhere we went he seemed to be there too. I thought it was really strange. Like he was following us. Cam had money so he would use it to buy my mum things. Jewellery, a new television, clothes. He really liked showing off his cash, and trying to win over my Mum. At first I thought he wasn’t that bad, and I like to see my Mum smile, All I ever wanted was for my Mum to be happy again. She deserved it. We had been through enough on our own, since we lost Dad, and her family was never really there for us. She struggled her life away to get where we were today. She cleaned house, motels, hotel, pubs. Anywhere she could to get some cash to keep the food on the table. Maybe Cameron was all she needed to help her be happy and not struggle anymore. Everything seemed to be going good for Cam and mum. They seen each other daily, and sometimes when I got home from school he was relaxing on the lounge like he lived there. Everything seemed to be okay. One night we were sound asleep, and I got woken up to banging sounds, I jumped up, my heart was racing. I didn’t know what it was. Then I heard the voice, “Lara, open the god damn door!” Cameron was screaming while he pounded on the the door, I got up and walked to the doorway, Mum ran passed still putting on her dressing gown. She quickly opened the door, but as she did Cameron pushed on it and the force knocked Mum onto her ass. I remember gasping and then running over to helped her up. “Bloody hell, What the f**k is wrong Cam!?” Mum asked, with a frightened look on her face, as she straightened up nightie. “I need some money Lara, I don’t have any money left. I spent it all of you and your kids. I owe someone, his a pretty mean bloke. I need you too- Can you give me some cash.” The way he said it wasn’t like he was asking-he was demanding it, he had an attitude in the way he was speaking to my Mum, and I didn’t like it. “What the hell are you going on about?!” Mum snapped at him, “All the money I’ve been spending on you! It wasn’t my money! Are you dumb?!” Cameron snapped and screamed at her, Mum jumped back a step, and put a hand out in front of me to move me backwards. “Oh, I’m sorry Cam, but I don’t have any money. Maybe you should go home, go to sleep. Then tomorrow we can work out what to do about money” Mum was trying to sound calm, I could tell she was trying to defuse the whole situation. Cam was glaring at Mum, with these pure black empty eyes. His jaw was clenched and his face was completely expressionless. “Are you f*****g kidding me Lara?” Cam snarled at her “ Ive spent thousands on you and these f*****g kids! And you can’t even help me?!” He rushed over to Mum, and was pretty much spitting his words, “I never asked you to spend all that money on us Cameron! I never expected it either! Here-You can have it all back!” Mum growled at him as stormed off down the hallway to her room. I could hear her rummaging around for a minute, then she came stomping back down the hall way with her arms full of clothes and a garbage bag of stuff. She threw it past Cameron’s head and out the door, “There! Have it all back. Its all in there. EVERY SINGLE THING. You can go sell it tomorrow! Now get the f**k out of my house!” Mum screamed, I had never heard my mum yell like that before. I swallowed a lump in my throat, as I stared at Cameron. Waiting for him to leave, but he didn’t. He was standing there shocked, “You’re the same as every other money hungry w***e I’ve met! Don’t treat me like a piece of s**t! You b***h!” He screamed at her “How dare you!” He snarled, raising his hand like he was going to smack her in the face. “Don’t talk about my mum like that!” I blurted out. I was scared as the words came out. He could probably tell, because my voice was cracking. But I wasn’t letting him treat her like that. Out of no where, everything happened so quickly. Cameron pushed passed my mother and charged at me. He backhanded me across my face. The force knocked me fair on my ass. I heard my mum scream and howl in fear. I could see these white flickers, like little fire flies, then I tasted some blood in my mouth. Everything was fading in and out of blackness, like a dark train tunnel. I was scared and shaking as I lift my hand up and felt a massive lump on my lip, and the wetness on my fingertips was blood, not saliva. Cam bent down and picked me up by the scruff of my Pyjama top. “What are you going to do about it BOY! You wanna act like a man, I’ll beat you like one” I could feel the specks of his saliva hitting my face, as he spat out the words. He pulled me that close to his face, that all I could smell was the alcohol. I wanted to protect my mother, and Harry, but I was no match for Cam. Even tough he wasn’t very tall he had muscles and a solid build. I couldn’t do much of anything to help. I thought I was going to die. Cameron raised his hand again, but this time it was a closed fist. He was going to punch me this time, so I closed my eyes. I was ready to cop my first ever punch in the face. I was so scared I tightly held my eyes closed, I didn’t want to see it. Suddenly I heard a loud smash and glass shattering, I slightly opened my eyes. As I did Cameron’s eyes were rolling into the back in his head, his grip loosened off me, as he dropped to the floor. I stared at him laying on the floor for a minute, then I look up at my mum. She was standing there with a big broken beer mug in her hand. The only thing left in her hand was the broken handle of the mug. She had smashed it over Cameron’s head. We were both staring at him in silence for a minute. “Mum your bleeding!” I said as I noticed blood dripping from her finger, down to her wrist. “Pete! Run to the neighbours and call the cops. You know our address?” She spoke calmly, but I couldn’t stop staring at Cameron’s body laying there, he looked dead- He was still breathing, but had blood on the back of his head and a gash. The blood was dropping onto the floor, “Peter Greene!” She snapped to get my attention, I looked up at her as I jumped to my feet, “Honey do you know our address?” She again softly, and I nodded. “Okay baby, go to the neighbours and get them to call the cops” She was shaking, she was scared, but she kept herself calm so I didn’t freak out.
