The Girl Between Two Kings

771 Words
“Trust is a luxury no one can afford in the middle of a war.” ⸻ The village square fell silent. Children stopped playing. Merchants abandoned their stalls. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath. On one side stood Kael Blackwood, the Alpha King of the Werewolves, his amber eyes fixed on the vampire before him. On the other stood Lucien Draven, the Crown Prince of the Vampire Empire, calm and smiling as though they had met at a royal banquet instead of a battlefield. Lyra stood between them. Confused. Terrified. And angry. “Will someone tell me what’s going on?” she demanded. Neither man answered. They never took their eyes off each other. ⸻ Lucien spoke first. “You’ve become even more predictable, Kael.” “And you’ve become even more arrogant,” Kael replied. Lucien chuckled. “Still blaming my people for a war that ended centuries ago?” Kael took a step forward. “It never ended.” The temperature seemed to drop. Golden and crimson eyes locked. One wrong move… And the village would become a battlefield. ⸻ Lyra finally snapped. “Enough!” Both men looked at her. “I don’t know either of you.” “You both appear out of nowhere, speak in riddles, and expect me to trust you?” She pointed at Lucien. “You claim to know my family.” Then she turned to Kael. “And last night, I saw a giant black wolf that looked exactly like you.” Silence. Kael’s expression changed. “So… you remember.” “It was you?” “You saved my life.” “I did.” “Why?” Kael hesitated. “Because someone wanted you dead.” Lucien folded his arms. “And someone still does.” ⸻ Suddenly— A shrill whistle echoed through the village. Kael’s head snapped upward. “No…” Dozens of black arrows rained from the rooftops. “Down!” Kael roared. He threw himself toward Lyra just as the first arrow struck the ground where she had been standing. Lucien moved with supernatural speed, drawing his sword and deflecting another volley before it could reach nearby villagers. Panic erupted. People screamed and fled. Figures dressed in black cloaks dropped from the rooftops, surrounding the square. Their faces were hidden behind bone-white masks. Each carried curved blades etched with glowing blue runes. Kael recognized them immediately. “The Hollow Order.” Lucien’s smile disappeared. “They’ve found her already.” ⸻ The leader removed his mask. A cruel grin spread across his face. “Hand over the hybrid.” “No,” Kael growled. The man laughed. “The Alpha protects her?” He looked at Lucien. “And the Vampire Prince stands beside him?” “What an unexpected alliance.” Lucien twirled his sword. “Don’t mistake coincidence for friendship.” ⸻ The assassin raised his hand. “Kill everyone.” The battle exploded. Kael transformed instantly. Bones cracked. Muscles expanded. Within seconds, a colossal black wolf towered over the square. He lunged into the enemy ranks, scattering assassins with terrifying force. Lucien blurred through the battlefield like living shadow. His crimson blade flashed. One. Two. Three assassins fell before they could even react. Lyra stood frozen. This couldn’t be real. Werewolves. Vampires. Magic. Everything she believed about the world was collapsing around her. Then she heard a child cry. A little girl was trapped beneath a fallen cart while an assassin closed in. Without thinking, Lyra ran. “No!” She threw herself between the child and the assassin. The curved blade swung toward her. She raised her hands instinctively. A burst of brilliant blue water erupted from the ground. It coiled like a living serpent, wrapped around the assassin, and hurled him across the square. Everyone stopped. Even Kael. Even Lucien. The water circled Lyra protectively before sinking back into the earth. The village fell into stunned silence. Lucien whispered, almost in awe, “Siren magic…” Kael stared at Lyra. “No…” “It can’t be…” Before anyone could speak again, a haunting song drifted across the sea. It was beautiful. Ancient. Powerful. The waves began to rise. Far out on the horizon, a fleet of shimmering ships emerged from the mist. At the bow of the largest vessel stood a woman wearing a silver coral crown. Her sapphire-blue hair danced in the wind. Queen Nereids Tideborn had arrived. She looked directly at Lyra. Then she spoke words that shook every soul on the shore. “My daughter…” “I have finally found you.”
