“Sometimes your greatest enemy is the only one who can save your life.”
⸻
The sky burned crimson.
Lightning split the clouds as monstrous creatures crawled from the sea, their bodies twisted by dark magic. Their hollow eyes glowed violet, and their screams echoed across the coast.
The villagers fled in terror.
Mordecai stood atop the cliff, watching with amusement.
“Kill the girl,” he ordered.
“The prophecy ends tonight.”
The creatures charged.
⸻
Kael lunged first.
His massive black wolf crashed into the nearest monster, sending it flying across the beach. Sand exploded beneath his paws as he ripped through another with razor-sharp claws.
Yet…
The creature rose again.
Its wounds healed instantly.
Kael growled.
“They don’t die.”
⸻
Lucien appeared beside him in a blur of shadows.
His crimson sword sliced through another monster’s neck.
The head rolled across the sand.
Moments later…
It reattached itself.
Lucien frowned.
“They regenerate.”
Kael glanced at him.
“I didn’t ask for your help.”
Lucien smirked while blocking another attack.
“And yet you’re still alive because of it.”
⸻
The two exchanged a glare.
Even in the middle of battle…
Neither trusted the other.
⸻
A roar erupted behind them.
Three monsters charged straight toward Lyra.
She backed away.
“I… I can’t control my powers!”
One creature swung a jagged claw toward her face.
Before it could strike—
Kael leapt in front of her.
The blow tore across his shoulder.
Blood splashed onto the sand.
“Kael!” Lyra cried.
He didn’t look at her.
“Run.”
⸻
Lucien’s eyes narrowed.
Without hesitation, he thrust his own body between Lyra and another attacker.
A claw raked across his chest.
His coat ripped open, revealing a deep wound that began to heal almost instantly.
Lyra stared in disbelief.
“He protected me…”
Why would they both risk their lives for someone they barely knew?
⸻
High above, Queen Nereids raised both hands.
The ocean answered.
Towering waves rose like giant walls before crashing down on the monsters.
For a moment…
The battlefield fell silent.
Then the creatures stood again.
Unharmed.
Nereids’ face darkened.
“They’re cursed.”
⸻
Mordecai laughed.
“Did you really think ordinary magic could defeat them?”
He raised his black staff.
Purple chains burst from the ground.
They wrapped around Kael’s legs.
Around Lucien’s arms.
Even Queen Nereids found herself trapped.
Only Lyra remained free.
⸻
Mordecai descended from the cliff.
Slowly.
Calmly.
As if victory had already been decided.
He stopped a few feet from Lyra.
“So this is the child who will change the world.”
He tilted her chin upward.
“I expected more.”
Fear surged through her.
She wanted to run.
But her legs wouldn’t move.
⸻
A voice echoed deep inside her heart.
“Stop running.”
Another voice followed.
“You are not weak.”
Then another.
“Remember who you are.”
The sea began to glow.
The moon shone brighter.
The wind circled Lyra like an invisible shield.
Her heartbeat matched the rhythm of the waves.
Her eyes flashed brilliant sapphire blue.
The crescent moon mark on her shoulder blazed with silver light.
Water spiraled around her, lifting her gently off the ground.
Everyone watched in stunned silence.
⸻
Lyra opened her eyes.
They no longer held fear.
They held power.
She raised one hand.
The ocean answered.
A massive pillar of water erupted beneath Mordecai, hurling him high into the air.
The purple chains binding Kael, Lucien, and Nereids shattered instantly.
Kael stared at Lyra in amazement.
Lucien smiled despite himself.
“So…”
“The prophecy wasn’t exaggerated.”
⸻
Mordecai landed hard but rose with a cold smile.
“Excellent.”
He brushed the sand from his robes.
“Now I know.”
He looked directly into Lyra’s glowing eyes.
“The three bloodlines have truly awakened.”
He disappeared into a cloud of black smoke.
The surviving monsters retreated into the sea.
Silence returned.
⸻
As dawn’s first light touched the horizon, the beach was littered with broken weapons and the scars of battle.
Kael shifted back into human form, exhausted.
Lucien wiped blood from the corner of his mouth.
Nereids walked slowly to Lyra.
Without a word, she wrapped her daughter in a gentle embrace.
Lyra hesitated…
Then hugged her back.
For the first time in twenty-one years, mother and daughter were reunited.
But Kael’s gaze remained fixed on the distant horizon.
“This isn’t over.”
Lucien nodded.
“No.”
“This was only the beginning.”
Far away, hidden inside a fortress carved into black stone, Mordecai stood before an ancient mirror.
A shadowy figure appeared within it.
Its face remained concealed.
“Has the hybrid awakened?” the figure asked.
Mordecai smiled.
“Yes.”
“And everything is unfolding exactly as you planned.”
The shadow laughed.
“Then prepare the next phase.”
“Bring me the girl…”
“…alive.”
