The first gunshot shattered the silence.
BANG!
“DOWN!”
Emmeer wrapped one arm around Aimaara and pulled her to the ground as another bullet tore through the air above them.
CRACK!
Concrete shattered beside Rayyan.
“Damn it!”
He fired twice into the darkness.
BANG! BANG!
No scream. No movement.
“They’re using the containers as cover!” Rayyan shouted. “They’re surrounding us.”
Emmeer’s eyes swept across the warehouse.
Every entrance.
Every elevated platform.
Every blind spot.
His instincts screamed one thing.
This wasn’t a simple ambush.
They had prepared this place long before they arrived.
“They planned every inch of this place…” he muttered.
Aimaara pressed her palms against the cold floor, struggling to steady her breathing. She had never experienced gunfire this close before. Every shot made her heart race.
“Emmeer…”
Her voice trembled.
“I’m scared.”
For a moment, his expression softened.
“I know.”
He reached for her hand and squeezed it firmly.
“But listen to me. No matter what happens, stay behind me.”
She nodded.
“I won’t leave you.”
His jaw tightened.
“Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”
Above them, behind reinforced glass, a man in a tailored black suit watched the chaos unfold.
His face remained hidden in the shadows.
Only the silver ring on his finger caught the light.
A circle.
Seven stars.
The Covenant.
“So…” he murmured. “The Black Eagle hasn’t grown weak after all.”
A faint smile appeared.
“But let’s see how long you can protect her.”
He pressed a button.
CLANG!
Steel shutters dropped from the ceiling, blocking every exit.
Aimaara looked around in panic.
“We’re trapped.”
Rayyan checked the doors.
“No emergency exit. This entire place is a cage.”
Emmeer slowly stood, his pistol aimed toward the darkness.
“That’s exactly what they wanted.”
A distorted laugh echoed through the speakers.
“Smart. Very smart.”
A pause.
“But intelligence won’t save you tonight.”
The lights flickered on.
One row at a time.
Six men dressed in black emerged from behind the containers. Each carried a rifle. Each wore the same silver ring.
The Covenant.
One of them stepped forward.
“Kill the girl.”
Aimaara’s heart stopped.
“Leave Emmeer alive.”
Before fear could take over, Emmeer stepped in front of her.
“If you want her…”
His voice was cold.
“You’ll have to go through me.”
The men raised their weapons.
The first burst of gunfire erupted.
RAT-TAT-TAT!
Emmeer pushed Aimaara behind a shipping container.
“Stay here!”
“What about you?”
“I’m ending this.”
He stepped out from cover.
The calm CEO disappeared.
In his place stood the man known as Black Eagle.
Fast. Precise. Controlled.
He disarmed the first attacker and forced him down. Another rushed him with a knife, but Emmeer caught his wrist and sent the weapon clattering to the floor.
Rayyan shook his head.
“I’ll never get used to watching him fight.”
Aimaara stared from behind the container.
This wasn’t the man she had met at Libreria Aurora.
This was the real Emmeer Fahren.
Suddenly, another attacker appeared behind him.
“Emmeer!”
Too late.
The blade caught his back.
Aimaara gasped.
Blood stained his black shirt.
Emmeer staggered for half a second before turning around.
His expression held no fear.
Only cold determination.
The attacker stepped backward.
“What are you…?”
Emmeer wiped the blood from his lip.
“My turn.”
The warehouse erupted into chaos.
Gunfire echoed between the containers as Emmeer moved from one position to another, never wasting a shot.
“Boss!” Rayyan shouted. “Two more on the upper platform!”
“I see them.”
Emmeer grabbed a metal pipe and threw it toward the overhead lights.
CRASH!
The lights shattered.
Darkness swallowed the platform, leaving only dim emergency lights.
“They’ve lost their advantage,” Emmeer said.
Rayyan grinned.
“Now we’re talking.”
Then Aimaara felt a hand grab her from behind.
A blade pressed against her neck.
“Don’t move.”
Her eyes widened.
“So this is Hakim’s daughter.”
She struggled, but the attacker held her firmly.
Across the warehouse, Emmeer froze.
His eyes locked onto Aimaara.
For the first time that night, fear crossed his face.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for her.
The attacker smiled.
“There he is…”
“The legendary Black Eagle.”
He tightened his grip slightly.
“I wonder what you’ll sacrifice for this girl.”
Rayyan raised his pistol.
“No,” Emmeer ordered.
“You’ll hit her.”
The warehouse fell silent.
The attacker looked at Emmeer.
“Drop your weapon.”
Emmeer slowly lowered his pistol.
CLANG.
It struck the concrete floor.
Rayyan’s eyes widened.
“Boss…”
Emmeer said nothing.
His gaze remained fixed on Aimaara.
The attacker laughed.
“So the Black Eagle really does have a weakness.”
A faint smile appeared on Emmeer’s face.
Cold.
Dangerous.
“No.”
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“I just wanted you to look away from my hands.”
The attacker frowned.
“What—?”
BANG!
A hidden shot rang through the warehouse.
The attacker recoiled, his grip loosening.
Aimaara immediately broke free and stumbled forward.
Emmeer caught her before she fell.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head, tears filling her eyes.
“I’m okay…”
Her fingers instinctively gripped his coat.
“I thought…”
Her voice trembled.
“I thought I was going to die.”
Emmeer gently placed a hand behind her head.
“Not while I’m still breathing.”
For a moment, the chaos around them disappeared.
No enemies.
No gunfire.
Only the two of them.
Emmeer noticed the faint mark on her neck.
“You’re bleeding.”
“It’s only a scratch.”
His jaw tightened.
“To me…”
He paused.
“Even a scratch is too much.”
Before either of them could say anything else—
BANG!
A bullet struck the container beside them.
Reality returned.
Emmeer immediately pushed Aimaara behind him.
“Stay with Rayyan.”
“What about you?”
“I’m finishing this.”
Rayyan tossed him another pistol.
“Catch!”
Emmeer caught it without looking.
The remaining attackers spread out.
They were no longer underestimating him.
One fired.
Emmeer moved aside.
Another shot followed.
He disappeared behind a container, then emerged from the opposite side and disarmed the attacker before knocking him down.
Two more rushed forward.
Rayyan sighed.
“They never learn.”
Emmeer caught one attacker’s weapon and forced him back. The second tried to strike him, but Emmeer moved aside and sent him stumbling into a container.
Both men were down.
Aimaara watched in stunned silence.
“He’s not trying to kill them…”
“He’s stopping them.”
That realization changed something inside her.
Despite everything people called him…
Emmeer still chose restraint whenever he could.
Suddenly, the warehouse speakers crackled.
“Impressive.”
The mysterious voice returned.
“Fifteen years…”
“And you’re still protecting her.”
Emmeer slowly looked upward.
“Come out.”
The voice laughed.
“Not today.”
“Tonight isn’t about killing you.”
“It’s about reminding you…”
“…that you’re already losing.”
The emergency lights flickered.
A projector suddenly illuminated the warehouse wall.
An old photograph appeared.
Aimaara stepped closer.
Her breath caught.
It was her father.
Hakim.
Standing beside a much younger Emmeer.
They were smiling.
Like family.
Aimaara turned slowly toward him.
“You…”
Her voice trembled.
“You knew my father before all of this?”
Emmeer closed his eyes briefly.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I couldn’t.”
“Couldn’t…”
She swallowed.
“…or wouldn’t?”
Before Emmeer could answer, the projector changed.
A second photograph appeared.
This time, Hakim was being held captive.
Someone stood behind him, their face hidden beneath a black hood.
The timestamp in the corner read:
Aimaara’s knees weakened.
“No…”
The mysterious voice spoke again.
“Tell her, Emmeer.”
“Tell her who was there…”
“…on the night her father disappeared.”
Silence.
Emmeer didn’t answer.
And somehow, that silence hurt more than any confession could have.
Tears filled Aimaara’s eyes.
She took one step backward.
Then another.
For the first time since meeting him…
She wasn’t looking at Emmeer with trust.
She was looking at him with doubt.
And that hurt Emmeer more than the wound on his back ever could.
