My heart dropped. It felt like the ground shifted under me, the chatter around the restaurant fading into a dull buzz. My mind was everywhere. I took a deep breath, contemplating what to do. Even the coffee in my hand suddenly tasted bitter. Just then, I saw him coming. He must have remembered the phone. I cleared the message and placed the phone back on the table. My fingers trembled slightly as I set it down. I grabbed my phone, pretending to scroll through something else. “Sorry, I forgot this,” he said briskly. “Seems so,” I replied, sipping my coffee.
