“This is a nice location,” Bessie Clifton said as she turned her rental car into a shopping center that had two big-name retail shops in the building at the back of the parking lot. In front of it sat another building, this one square and housing two eateries. Rather, just the one—The Mad Mango—and the other one was for rent. “What goes great with smoothies?” Wynona asked. “Bread,” Bessie answered with a smile. Bread went well with absolutely everything, as the extra weight around Bessie’s very pear-shaped midsection would testify. Best of all with butter and jam, and she had such a hard time to keep from sampling the bread she baked with homemade raspberry preserves.
