Scott smiled at the blinking Christmas lights on the pine tree in Joy’s front yard. She obviously didn’t have an HOA to send her a take-down notice within thirty days of the holiday, or those wouldn’t be there. They winked merrily in the darkening night, and Scott’s rental car headlights cut across them as well. Lights flooded the front porch, steps, sidewalk and driveway, and he actually raised his hand to shield his eyes. He’d worked until lunchtime in Hilton Head, then driven to the airport for his flight. Then he’d flown, eaten terrible airplane food, and picked up his rental car in Corpus Christi. As the clock sat near nine-thirty, he hoped Joy wouldn’t be too tired to see him for at least an hour, and then he’d head to his hotel to check-in. Texas sat behind Hilton Head by an hour
