What they didn't know is Isabella was about to knock on the door when she heard them say that. And after hearing what was next, she just left.
So after they ate lunch, Nathan and Cara walked towards Isabella.
"Mom" he said "we need to tell you something"
She looked at them.
"I'm still mad about your speeches yesterday" Isabella told them as they sat on the couch.
"Yeah, I know" Nathan said "But maybe you'll be less mad now" he added before looking at Cara.
"I'm pregnant" The latter said
Isabella stood up and smiled.
"Congratulations ! How far along are you?" She asked after hugging Cara.
" 13 weeks"
And after telling her, she drove to the firehouse to tell Doug. And then she went back the following day, when her team was on shift, to tell everyone.
"But are you coming back?" Jake asked
"I hope so, yeah" she replied
"But you're having a baby. In your body" Jake said, making everyone laugh
"I'll let you guys tell Stone why he has to come back"
"You better come back fast" Doug told her as everyone seemed to agree.
And so they could leave for their honeymoon holiday in Venice.
After two days of visiting, they were watching the sunset through the highest balcony when the bars detached from the wall. As they were holding to it, Cara grabbed a bar without letting go of Nathan's hand. She was the only thing keeping him from falling. Everyone was screaming, people had fallen and, although it was too high to see, they knew people had reached the ground.
Cara pulled Nathan as hard as she could so he could grab the bar below her and she used her two hands to hold on to it. The only thing keeping them alive is the other side of the bars still holding onto the wall.
People who were still in the building were trying to help, but there was not much they could do.
"Do you have a rope?" Cara shouted "A long one?"
The tour guide translated what she just asked and they came back with one.
"Tell them to tie it to something that can hold. Tie it very well."
She then asked the kid above her, who was holding to the bars, if he could still hold on. He nodded. She wasn't sure he understood, but he was still holding to it.
She then told them to attach the rope to the top bar, so that if it detached from the wall, it'll still hang.
"You alright baby?" She asked Nathan
He was still holding on, but she could see he was getting weaker.
Then they heard the sirens. Firefighters, ambulances were there.
"Hey kid. Niño? How do you say kid?" She asked the tour guide.
He told her he'll translate.
"Can you climb up?"
"No" he replied
"Do you have another rope?" She asked
They shook their heads. No.
A few minutes later, the firefighters arrived and geared up and got the kid out.
Then two of them were getting down from the top of the building.
As the first one who arrived at her height was about to attach her to him, she told him to get to Nathan first.
She even pointed at him.
"Primero. Primero" she repeated but they weren't listening.
"Other" he told her, pointing at his colleague on the other side.
She ended up letting him attach her and as they were sliding down, Nathan's hands let go.
Both the firefighters and Cara reached out to grab him but missed.
"Nooooooooooooo" she shouted.
And the sound broke everybody's hearts. And not a second later, she was crying and telling the man holding her that it was his fault.
"I told you to get him first. Why didn't you listen to me"
And as soon as they reached the ground, she ran around, looking for him.
First they were trying to stop her, but the firefighter who got her down told them something and they let her check every body that was covered.
Every time she lifted a cloth and it wasn't him, she felt a relief, but then the pain again.
She tried to ask them where the man who fell the last was but they didn't seem to understand.
"No other man fell" a young man told her as she was sitting on the flour, covering her head.
She looked up to him.
"No other man reached the ground" he added
She stood up and looked up.
"This guy's saying they found someone who fell over the restaurant roof"
Cara's hope came back. And when they got a stretcher out of the building, she ran to them and saw it was indeed Nathan. He was alive. He is alive. And she's never felt more relieved in her life than in that moment.
She followed them to the ambulance and the firefighter who grabbed her came to tell them she should get checked up too.
She nodded. Whatever happens, he's alive. Unconscious, but alive.
After a few minutes of no information, someone who speaks english finally came to her.
"Hello. My name is Isabella"
Cara remembered. She should tell Isabella.
"Can you write down your friend's name"
"My husband" she cut her "He's my husband"
Isabella nodded.
"Please write his name and everything here. And yours too. Have they checked you?"
Cara shook her head. Not yet.
"Does your husband have illness?"
Cara shook her head.
"Where is he?" She asked, although she had a feeling he was in surgery.
"Surgery" she replied. Please wait here" she walked her to a waiting area and she sat, waiting.
When the doctor arrived, Isabella, the nurse, had to join them as his english was not the best.
"I'm pregnant" Cara told them, remembering.
They started panicking.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Isabella asked
"I forgot" she said as they brought a mobile ultrasound machine.
Except her hands, which were bleeding without her noticing, nothing’s wrong with her, thankfully.
So they cleaned her palms and put some bandaids on them before she went to wait for her husband.
She grabbed her waist bag and her phone. She managed to call her mom using only the tip of her fingers.
"Cara… what happened?" She immediately asked
"There was an accident. The balcony fell. We held onto the bars but…" She was about to cry
"Nathan fell. He's in surgery"
"Oh thank goodness he's alive" Caroline said
"Can you tell Isabella?" She asked her "It took me ten minutes to call you" she added, showing her her hands.
"Of course baby. Where are you right now?"
"Hospital."
"Text me the address will ya?"
"What for?"
"Ben"
"Oh no don't "
"Text him the address then."
"Mom he's working"
"He can ask! Oh he just answered, he says text him the address now. His boss said ok"
"Really?"
"Come on, faster"
Cara nodded. Then she remembered.
"I can't text"
"Ask someone" Caroline told her. "Be careful sweetheart. It's gonna be okay."
She hung up and asked the woman next to her if she speaks english.
"A little" she said
So she handed her her phone and asked her to text the address to Ben.
And she did.
"Thank you"
"You're welcome" she said "were you in that accident?"
Cara stared at her.
"The one in the tower"
Cara nodded.
"You're lucky" she told her
And as she said that, Cara's eyes filled with tears. Was she really?.
3 hours later, a doctor came to her to tell her her husband is out of surgery and he's gonna be okay.
After running to where he was and holding his plastered hand, he explained that he had to go back the following day for his legs.
"We took care of the most urgent parts, but we can't keep him under for too long"
Cara nodded and sat next to his bed, not letting go of his hand, no matter how uncomfortably itchy it was.
When she opened her eyes, as she had fallen asleep, her head resting on the bed corner, she saw Ben. She immediately stood up, surprised.
"Hey" he said, hugging her for a long moment.
"Didn't wanna wake you" he added "How are you doing?"
"Why how did you get here so fast?" She asked
"The accident is on the news. When I told my boss you were in it, he ordered me to leave" he smiled "how is he doing?"
Cara rested her head on his neck.
"Broken. Literally. His ribs, his shoulder, his wrists, his legs. Everywhere "
"Hey. He's alive, that's all that matters"
She nodded.
In the evening, Ben convinced her to get to the hotel and get some sleep.
When they first went to the hotel, she was amazed by how big and beautiful the suite was. But this time, all she felt was disgust. She wanted to leave and get a smaller, cheaper room. But she didn't have the time nor the energy to look for one.
The following day, she went back to the hospital as soon as they called her to tell her he was out.
She waited, sitting near the bed, until he opened his eyes. She kissed him on the front before asking how he was feeling. She didn't know if he could answer.
"Are you okay?" He replied
"I'm okay. The baby's okay. How are you feeling?" She said
"Numb. I can't feel anything."
Morphine. That works.
"You should go home, don't be alone" he said
"I'm not alone. Ben's here"
"Oh that's good. I'm sorry. I wanna go back to sleep"
"Go. I love you" she kissed him again
"I love you too"
And so she sat there for the whole day. And the next day. And the next day. And after a week, Nathan insisted she goes out and visit. He hadn’t known that she stayed there all day long. Until Ben told him.
Although she didn’t want to, she followed Ben wherever he was going. Taking pictures of him and sometimes he'd take selfies with the both of them, forcing her to smile a little.
And after a few weeks, he could finally be transported back to the US. And that's when they took his casts off and he started physical therapy.
It took him 2 months to finally be able to walk on his own, but he made it.
And Cara was already five months pregnant. Although she did relax a little, in the pool with Athena and her best friends amongst others, she did not really pay attention to the baby. Isabella had to remind her several times that she should go to the OBGYN for her ultrasound.
