After trying a good 5 dresses each, they finally found the ones. Cara’s was red long and one sleeved and Mary’s was also long but grey and unsleeved. And the heels they got looked so expensive they didn’t want to know the price.
They finally could go to sleep, each in their given room, at around 1 am.
After a breakfast and lunch with everyone, they had to get ready for the evening and put on their outfits on in Cara’s given room.
“I need to tell you something” Cara told Mary as they finished dressing and sat on the huge bed.
Mary looked at her, waiting.
“Nathan and I are sleeping together” She whispered
“What?” Mary shouted, standing up
“We’re not together, just s*x” She added
“Wow, why didn’t you tell me?”
“Well I’m telling you now” She said “And remember when I had to do all of Stuart’s chores for a week?”
“Wait, Stuart knew?” Mary asked again
Someone knocked at that moment and opened the door.
“Hey ladies, are you ready?” Nathan asked
Mary quickly pushed Cara and stepped to leave the room, followed by her friend.
“What’s wrong?” Nathan asked Cara
“Nothing, she’s just mad at me” Cara replied, following them to the limo.
The plan is simple : no talking to anyone. just saying hi, looking around and smiling, acting like their girlfriends.
As they arrived, Nathan and Cara walked in first followed by Josh and Mary. The girls were in awe at how it was breathtaking. Everyone was looking at everyone, glasses of champagne in their hands and stunning outfits. They greeted people they walked past by and stood near the bar. Cara and Mary were talking about how amazed they were while the Carloyls were talking to some people. Then, when Cara ordered a glass of water, the woman who was with the man talking to the brothers walked towards her and asked her why she ordered water.
“I don’t drink” Cara said, grabbing the glass and smiling at the waiter.
“Why, are you pregnant?” She asked in a horrified tone.
“No” Cara replied “I just don’t drink alcohol”
“Oh, were you an alcoholic?”
Cara was not happy with where she was going, and she was about to tell her she was working the next morning but remembered Nathan told her most of the women didn’t work.
So Cara just smile at her and grabbed Mary by the arm, to get away from her.
“Hey, I was talking to this nice lady” Mary said, looking behind her. “Also, I’m still mad at you”
“Sorry” Cara said, “I just needed to get away from her” Cara said, showing the woman.
Mary told her to just play nice and went back to her new friend. So Cara followed her.
“Hi, I’m Cassandra, Lucian’s wife” the lady presented herself.
Lucian, to whom she pointed at, was also talking to Nathan and Josh. So the other guy's wife, Cara guessed she was his wife, joined them.
“Hey why did you leave?” She asked
“Jessica, let the girl live” Cassandra told her “What’s your names?” She asked
“Cara”
“Mary”
“You two came with the Carloyls, right?” Cassandra asked
The girls nodded
“Oh, did you know, last year they came alone to the reunion. It was so awkward” She said
Cara and Mary looked at each other, not knowing what to say.
“You know, they’re lucky they’re rich, the poor guy’s wife died and if he weren’t rich, he wouldn’t find someone as young as you” she told Mary
The latter smiled, but Cara could see she was forcing herself.
“So, what do you do with your life?” Cara asked, to change the subject
“Oh you know, like everyone here, we’re just taking care of the house and our children” Cassandra said
“And our men” Jessica added
Cara and Mary looked at each other again and forced themselves to smile.
“Should we join the boys?” Jessica asked
The three women followed her to the food bar and grabbed some things to eat next to them.
“Nathan, Josh, where did you find these fine ladies?” Cassandra started the conversation, making it awkward for the girls, again.
Nathan and Josh started talking to them as Cara and Mary stepped a bit back and complained about the situation.
“I hate you for bringing me here”
“Do rich people really like this bulshit?” Cara added
And as Cassandra called their names to get into the conversation, someone screamed near them and let go of their plate, breaking it. Everyone turned towards her and started screaming and running to the door. Except the door was locked as everyone invited was there and it automatically unlocks at 3 a.m.
A snake was crawling under the table full of food.
“You guys stop screaming” Cara shouted, making everyone stop and look at her.
She tried to lift her dress up to be able to move freely but she couldn’t so she tore it up until her knees, folded it up and tied it at her waist, making it not lower than her knees.
“Just stay here, don’t move and stop screaming. It won’t change anything” She told the crowd before joining Mary at the table.
She grabbed a salad bowl, emptied it and was about to walk to the snake when the latter walked towards her, or rather the floor.
Mary and herself locked eyes and they stood in front of each other, each with a glass bowl, the snake in the middle.
As it stopped in front of a lemon slice, backed out and went towards the eggs, Cara put the bowl over it, trapping it. But when she was about to get back up, she tripped and was about to fall when someone grabbed her.
“Thanks” she said, standing up and seeing it was Josh.
People started to cheer and move back towards the table when Mary stopped them.
“Did anyone call 911?” Cara asked.
“I did” someone said in the crowd.
“Good, you stay here” Mary told them, showing the stairs leading to the exit.
The girls regrouped and talked about the fact that the snake seemed to not like lemons.“Josh, come here” Mary called him “Cara’s gonna check if there are any other snakes. Cover the surrounding of the stairway with lemon juice” she handed him slices of lemons.
Cara opened the kitchen door and stepped back.
There was a nest of snakes in the middle of the kitchen.
“Is anyone inside?” She asked the staff
“I think so” One of them said
“Hernandez is not here” Another one said.
“Alright, you guys stay here” She told everyone. “Josh are you done?” She asked
The latter said no, so Nathan grabbed some lemon slices and helped him.
Cara and Mary poured lemon juice over their feet and walked inside the kitchen to find a huge metal box full of meat. They didn’t even need to speak to each other, the plan was written in their eyes.
Mary set the metal box aside after emptying it in the sink and put some meat on the floor for the snakes to get there.
After a few seconds, they started uncovering what they were hiding as they crawled over to the meat. Cara and Mary saw it was a man on the floor, probably Hernandez. As the snakes regrouped around the meat, one of them walked towards Cara but jumped back as it reached her foot. The lemon worked. They set the metal box over the snakes and breathed out of relief before getting Hernandez out of the kitchen.
They laid him on the floor and started checking the bites.
“He’s still breathing” Mary said
“Is there a vacuum cleaner somewhere?” Cara asked towards the staff
One of them ran to get one and gave it to her.
“Can you plug it?” Mary asked, annoyed.
He plugged it as she finished drawing circles around the bites she found all over Hernandez’s body.
Cara started sucking the bites with the vacuum cleaner and the firefighters arrived and asked people to move from the door, which they did. After they opened it, they ran towards Cara and Mary and asked what was going on.
Mary explained to them and, as they were about to move the metal box, Cara shouted “NO”
They looked at her.
“There’s around 20 snakes in there."
“What about this one?” A firefighter asked, pointing at the one under the glass bowl.
“It’s the first one that got out” Cara said.
“You two did that?” The captain asked them.
The girls nodded
“Wow” He said
“We’re from firehouse 42”
“Oh, I see. Good job” He said
They joined the crowd and left the building all together.
Cara and Mary high fived as they got out.
“Sorry” Cara told Nathan
“For what? Saving our lives?” He replied
“You said act like the other women” She said
“And let us die?” He replied again, “come on, if they say anything mean, I’ll bite them like the snakes should’ve” He said, putting his arm around her shoulders and Mary’s.
Cassandra ran towards them and hugged them, almost making them fall.
“Thank you thank you I don’t know how you did that but thank you you were amazing” And she kept talking, making Cara and Mary look at each other and smile again.
“We’re gonna be so tired, I hope it’s not gonna be busy” Mary told Cara as they sat in the limo to get back to the Carloyl’s.”
“What are you talking about?” Josh asked
“Our shift tomorrow” Cara replied
She grabbed her phone to check if anyone called.
“I’m gonna take a nap if that’s alright?” Mary said, putting her head on the window.
“But we’ll be home in 10 minutes” Josh said
“Every minute counts” Cara said before seeing a text from chief Douglas.
“Mary?” Cara called “Mary!”
“Let me rest!” She said
“Doug says we’re not doing an extra shift”
“Really?” She asked, opening her eyes and almost standing up.
She showed her the text.
She grabbed the bottle of champagne in the limo and drank straight from the bottle.
Nathan and Josh looked at her like she was crazy while Cara just smiled and rested her head on the seat for the rest of the ride.
“I’ve held myself from drinking all night” Mary said, getting out of the limo, the bottle still in her hands.
They all walked inside, showered and put their pyjamas on. Or rather,the pyjamas they were handed by the staff. Mary and Cara sat on Cara’s bed and were talking about how rich people are weird when someone knocked on her door.
“Oh, were you two supposed…?” Mary asked
“No” Cara said “Who is it?” She asked
“Hey girls” Nathan said, opening the door but only getting his head inside. “Do you wanna play some games?” He asked
Cara and Mary looked at each other and shrugged, agreeing.
So they all went to the living room and played in teams, girls v. Boys, drawing and guessing.
"Oh by the way, sorry for the dress. I would say I'd pay to fix it but I don't know if I actually could afford fixing it" Cara said
"Oh don't worry, we'll get it back to you fixed" Josh said
"Back to… what?"
Mary and Nathan were still trying to choose what to draw next
"Yeah"
"Yeah what?"
"It wasn't a loan. You guys can keep everything"
"What but it's like… the shoes cost more than my salary" Cara said
"Ready!" Mary and Nathan said, cutting them
And so they got back to the game.
