Bound by Fate

The silence in the Council chamber was so heavy, it felt like it was crushing everyone. The phrase "mating bond" just hung there in the air, like some ancient spell that couldn't be broken, and Luna was struggling to breathe. It felt like invisible hands were squeezing her chest. She looked at Darius, desperate, trying to find any sign of confusion or denial on his face, anything to suggest this was all a huge mistake. "No," Luna whispered, her voice barely there. "No... that's impossible," she added, shaking her head as if she could physically knock those words out of the air. Nobody said a word. That silence, though, was worse than any argument. It confirmed everything without them having to speak. A nervous, disbelieving laugh escaped her. She stepped back, her heel catching slightly on the slick floor. The sound boomed in the huge room. "You've all made some kind of mistake," Luna said, her voice rising and trembling. "This is... this is insane." "There's no mistake," Selene Ashcroft replied, her voice calm. Her measured, almost gentle tone somehow made it even worse. "The bond has recognized you." Luna shook her head harder, strands of hair falling into her face. "I met him yesterday," she insisted, as if saying it more would make it true. "Yesterday. That's it." "You met him yesterday," Selene agreed without missing a beat. "The bond has waited centuries." Luna just stared at her, looking for any sign of trickery or madness. "That doesn't even make sense," she said, her voice cracking a little. "It's not supposed to," Selene replied. Luna turned back to Darius, her desperation making her voice sharper. "You knew?" she asked. His face was completely unreadable, like a carefully constructed mask. "I suspected," Darius said. "You suspected?" Luna repeated. Disbelief quickly turned to anger. "That's your answer?" "The moment I caught your scent," he answered simply. Those words hit her harder than she expected, igniting a sharp heat in her chest. Anger flared, pushing back against the fear. "So everyone knew except me?" Luna demanded, her voice bouncing off the stone walls. "Is this some kind of joke I wasn't included in?" "I wanted proof before I told you," Darius said. "You should have asked if I wanted any part of this!" she snapped, her hands clenching into fists. A faint golden light flickered beneath her skin, like embers stirring. The mark on her wrist started to glow more clearly, reacting to her rising emotions. Several Council members shifted uncomfortably. An old Alpha slowly stood up, his powerful presence immediately grabbing everyone's attention. "Enough," he boomed, his voice echoing with authority. "We're wasting time discussing feelings while history repeats itself." He pointed directly at Luna, his gaze sharp. "The girl carries the Sun Mark." A wave of murmurs swept through the chamber. "It can't be," one voice whispered, sounding shaken. "I thought the bloodline was gone," another added, leaning forward as if proximity could change reality. "Then who hid her?" someone else asked urgently. Luna looked around the room, her confusion deepening into frustration. "Would someone please explain what the Sun Mark is?" she demanded, her voice cutting through the noise. Silence. Again. Her patience finally snapped. "I'm done with this!" Luna shouted. Golden energy exploded from her wrist, surging outward in a sudden, uncontrolled burst. A wave of light swept across the chamber, illuminating every surface. The marble floor trembled. Council members were shoved back into their seats, grabbing armrests. The chandeliers swayed violently, their chains creaking. Every candle in the room burst into brilliant golden flame. Then, as suddenly as it had started, everything went still. The light receded, leaving behind a stunned, breathless silence. Luna stared at her trembling hands in horror. "I didn't mean to..." she whispered, her voice small, stripped of her earlier fire. Darius stepped beside her, close enough that she could feel his presence steadying the air. "You couldn't control it," he said. "I almost destroyed your Council chamber," Luna said, shaken, her gaze darting around at the lingering scorch marks. "You barely awakened," Darius replied. Selene slowly stood up, her movements unhurried. Fascination, sharpened by calculation, replaced any hint of fear in her eyes. "So it's stronger than we thought," she said quietly. The elderly Alpha slammed his fist against the stone armrest, the sound cracking through the chamber. "This settles it!" he roared. "It settles nothing," Darius answered immediately. "It proves she's unstable," the Alpha said, pointing again. "It proves she's frightened," Darius countered. "It proves she is dangerous!" the Alpha snapped. Darius's eyes flashed gold, a brief but unmistakable shift. "So am I," he said. The room fell into an even deeper silence. The Alpha's voice hardened. "You would challenge the Council for her?" he asked. "I would protect my mate," Darius replied. The word echoed like a bell struck in an empty hall. Mate. No one had spoken it aloud before, not even Darius. Luna looked at him, stunned, as if the word had physically altered the space between them. "You... actually believe that?" she asked, her voice quieter, uncertain. He turned toward her fully, his expression no longer entirely guarded. "I don't believe it," Darius said, his voice softening, carrying something deeper beneath the surface. "I know it." Her heartbeat stumbled painfully. The strange pull she'd been fighting since the warehouse suddenly made sense, terrifying her more than comforting her. It wasn't just attraction. It wasn't curiosity or coincidence. It was something older, woven into their very existence. Something neither of them had chosen. Selene raised a hand, silencing the rising tension. "The Council will recess," she announced. Several members immediately protested, voices overlapping. "We should vote now," one said sharply. "No," Selene replied firmly, her gaze never leaving Luna. "I want answers before I decide her fate." She turned her attention to Darius. "You have three days," she said. "Three days for what?" Darius asked. "To discover why the Hidden One has returned," Selene answered, her expression darkening slightly. "And to prove she won't become what Sienna became." The name sent a chill through Luna, colder than the chamber itself. Everyone was comparing her to a dead woman she'd never met, everyone except Darius. As the Council members slowly filed out, their robes brushing against stone, Luna caught a glimpse of a figure standing alone on the highest balcony. A young man dressed entirely in black, still and unmoving, as if carved from shadows. He wasn't watching the Council. He was watching her. The instant their eyes met... he smiled. Not kindly. Knowingly. Like someone recognizing a long-awaited moment. Then he disappeared into the shadows as if he'd never been there. Luna's pulse quickened, her breath catching in her throat. She didn't know who he was. But somehow... she knew he wasn't there to judge her. He was there because he had been waiting for her to awaken.
