The Man With His Face

2476 Words
“Impossible.” Darius’s voice barely made it out into the chamber. The man inside the glass pod didn’t move. His eyes were closed now, though Luna could’ve sworn they’d been open when she first saw him. Long black hair fell across his forehead. His face had no scars like Darius, but every other detail was the same. Same strong jaw. Same dark brows. Same mouth Luna had kissed just hours ago. Looking at him felt wrong. Like someone had put a private part of Darius on display behind glass. Luna stepped closer. Not to the pod. To Darius. His hand hung stiff at his side. She slipped her fingers into his. He didn’t react at first. Then his grip tightened around hers, hard enough to show how shaken he really was. Lucian watched them from beside the iron door. “You searched graves for answers,” he said. “You followed memories through ruined palaces and ancient halls.” His smile grew. “And all this time, the answer was breathing under your home.” Darius looked at him. “Kael died.” “Yes.” “Solara put Nightbane through his heart.” “Yes.” “She saved his soul.” Lucian tilted his head. “That’s what she believed.” The black mark around Darius’s wrist pulsed. Luna felt his anger building through the bond. Not wild. Focused. “What did you do to him?” Darius asked. Lucian glanced at the glass chamber. “I preserved what was left.” “You corrupted him.” “I improved him.” Darius let go of Luna’s hand. For a second, she thought he was pulling away from her. Then he unclipped his sword and set it on the floor. Carefully. He’d promised not to let command decide for him. Now he was choosing not to attack while Lucian held hundreds of lives around them. Luna touched his arm. “I’m here.” His eyes stayed on the man behind the glass. “I know.” Cassian moved closer to the pod, careful. He studied the symbols carved into its base. “These aren’t preservation runes.” Lucian’s smile faded. Cassian crouched. “They’re containment seals.” Darius’s focus sharpened. “What are they containing?” Cassian didn’t answer right away. His fingers hovered over a black symbol. The veins on the left side of his face darkened. “Something that should’ve died with Kael.” Lucian sighed. “You always ruin beautiful explanations.” Cassian stood. “You didn’t preserve Kael.” “No?” “You preserved the corruption Solara cut out of him.” Silence dropped over the room. Luna looked back at the pod. The man inside still hadn’t moved. “That isn’t Kael?” Cassian’s expression was grim. “It has his body.” Darius stared through the glass. “But not his soul.” “No.” That should’ve felt like relief. It didn’t. Luna felt the emptiness open inside Darius. For days, everyone had told him he carried Kael’s soul. Now Kael’s body stood just a few feet away, filled with something else. Another reminder that the past kept clawing at him, taking pieces and calling them identity. Luna stepped between Darius and the pod. He looked down at her. “That isn’t you,” she said. “I know.” “Do you?” His jaw tightened. “I know it intellectually.” “That’s not the same thing.” “No.” Luna pressed her palm to his chest. His heartbeat was steady under her hand. “This is you.” Darius covered her hand. Behind her, Lucian gave a soft laugh. “Very comforting.” Luna didn’t turn. “You’re bothered by it.” “By what?” “That he listens to me.” Lucian didn’t answer. Luna faced him. “You built all of this on the idea that love makes people easier to control.” “It does.” “No. Fear does.” His crimson eyes narrowed. “You keep saying that like repeating it makes it true.” “It worked on Darius.” A faint warmth moved through the bond. Lucian noticed. His gaze hardened. Ethan walked between the rows of pods, reading the plaques. “Some of these names are centuries old.” Alden followed slowly. “They’re gone from every record.” “Because I removed them,” Lucian said. Serena turned on him. “You erased entire bloodlines.” “I stopped rebellion from spreading.” “You kidnapped children.” Lucian looked at the smallest pods. “They would’ve grown into enemies.” Serena’s expression shifted. Whatever shame she still carried from Lucian’s control got buried under disgust. “You call everything dangerous when it doesn’t obey you.” “I call it predictable.” Evelyn stood near the open silver box, still holding one of her mother’s letters. “Why keep them alive?” Lucian looked at her. “Because dead enemies become martyrs.” “And living ones?” “Become leverage.” Mason stepped closer to Evelyn. “You’re really unpleasant.” Lucian gave a faint smile. “I’ve survived worse.” “Give me time.” It almost sounded normal. That made it worse. Hundreds of bodies slept behind glass while Lucian spoke like they were collectibles. Darius moved to the control panel beside Kael’s pod. Luna followed. “Can we open them?” he asked. Cassian checked the runes. “Not all at once.” “Why?” “They’ve been suspended for centuries. Waking them too fast could kill them.” Darius looked down the rows. “Then we do it slowly.” Lucian laughed. “You think they’ll thank you?” “I don’t care.” “They were Alphas.” “So am I.” “They’ll see your territory, your pack, your crown mark.” Lucian’s eyes gleamed. “They’ll challenge you.” Darius’s hand rested over the black mark on his wrist. “Then they’ll be free to choose that.” Lucian’s expression cooled. Luna gave a small smile. “You really hate that word.” “I hate how you use it to cover chaos.” “And I hate how you use peace to cover slavery.” The glass around Kael’s pod fogged. Everyone turned. A heartbeat sounded inside. Slow. Heavy. Wrong. Darius stepped in front of Luna. “Cassian.” “I didn’t touch anything.” The heartbeat came again. A crack formed in the glass. Lucian looked almost pleased. “You woke him.” Darius’s claws came out. “No.” Lucian glanced at their marks. “Command and Choice are in the same room.” The crack spread. “Kael’s body has been waiting for both.” Luna’s golden mark burned. Darius’s black mark answered. The man inside opened his eyes. They were pure black. The glass exploded. Darius turned, shielding Luna as shards flew. Ethan pulled Alden behind a pillar. Mason dragged Evelyn down. Serena covered Elara. Cassian stayed standing, sword raised. The man stepped out of the broken pod. Bare feet hit the floor. Black liquid ran down his skin. He looked straight at Darius. The resemblance was unbearable. Like a reflection with everything human stripped out. “Kael,” Lucian said. The man turned toward him. Lucian held out a hand. “Come here.” Kael didn’t move. Lucian’s smile slipped. “I command you.” Darius’s mark burned. But the creature ignored Lucian. It looked past Darius. At Luna. A black smile formed. “Solara.” Darius growled. “Her name is Luna.” The creature studied him. Then laughed. It was Darius’s voice, just empty. “You were always jealous.” “I’m not you.” “No.” It stepped closer. Darius blocked it. “You’re what she made after regretting me.” The words hit hard. Luna felt them sink into Darius. Replacement. Second choice. A safer version. She took his hand. He looked back. “I choose you,” she said. The creature’s smile faded. Lucian’s eyes sharpened. Darius squeezed her hand. “And I choose her.” The black-eyed Kael tilted his head. “She killed us.” “She saved your soul,” Luna said. The creature snapped its gaze to her. “She tore it out.” “No.” Luna stepped beside Darius. “She separated Kael from whatever you are.” Something shifted under its skin. Black veins rose. “Kael begged her to do it.” It moved fast. Darius shoved Luna aside and met it head-on. They slammed into a pillar. Darius hit its jaw. Kael just smiled. He struck Darius back. Blood hit the floor. “Darius!” Luna shouted. She raised her hand. Golden power wrapped around it. The creature froze for a second. Then turned its black eyes on her. Her power started to rot. Black spread through gold. Luna gasped. Cassian cut it with his silver blade. “Don’t use crown power on it!” Luna stumbled back. “What is it?” “The first corruption,” Cassian said. “Lucian’s original attempt to turn love into obedience.” Lucian looked offended. “Attempt?” The creature broke free. Darius grabbed it from behind. They crashed into the control panel. Pods started flashing red. Alden looked around. “They’re destabilizing.” Ethan ran to a chamber. “How do we stop it?” Cassian pointed to three black levers. “Manual release.” Ethan and Serena ran. Mason followed. Evelyn grabbed his arm. “Be careful.” “I’ve recently gained strong motivation.” She kissed him quickly. “Come back.” “Planning on it.” He ran. Darius and the creature fought through the rows. Same movements. Same instincts. Same violence. But Luna saw the difference. The creature fought to dominate. Darius fought to protect. Kael swung toward a pod with a sleeping child. Darius took the hit instead of letting it break. He dropped to one knee. The creature grabbed his throat. “You hesitate.” Darius dug his claws in. “I choose.” “You’re weak.” “Probably.” He looked at Luna. “But I’m not alone.” Luna understood. She opened the bond. Not power. Not Solara. Just herself. Her love moved through it. Warm. Steady. Chosen. Darius stood. He ripped Kael’s hand away and drove him back. The creature snarled. “What did she give you?” Darius smiled through blood. “Nothing you can take.” He struck again. Kael staggered. Lucian’s calm cracked. “Enough.” He raised a hand. Darkness rushed toward Kael. Cassian blocked it. Silver cut through shadow. Lucian turned. “You belong to me.” Cassian’s mark burned. He dropped to one knee. “No.” He forced himself up. “And my last act is ending you.” He drove his sword into the floor. Silver light spread. Every seal lit up. The creature screamed. Black smoke tore from Kael. Darius held him in the light. “Luna!” She ran. Cassian shouted, “Not with crown power!” “I know.” She grabbed Darius instead. Their hands joined. The bond opened. Not a weapon. A place to stand. Luna felt the creature. Pain. Rage. A thousand years of being trapped. And beneath it— A small fragment. Bright. Terrified. Kael. Not his soul. A memory. Luna closed her eyes. “Kael.” The creature screamed. “Don’t call me that.” “It was your name before Lucian.” “I am the shadow.” “No.” She felt the fragment again. “You’re what he trapped it inside.” Darius tightened his grip. “What do we do?” Luna looked at him. “We let Kael choose.” Lucian laughed. “He’s dead.” “The soul is,” Luna said. “But the body remembers.” She reached through the bond. Not taking. Offering. “Kael,” she whispered. “You don’t have to fight.” The black smoke tightened. “I hate you.” “Maybe.” “You killed me.” “Solara did.” That mattered. The creature flickered. Black gave way to gray. Just for a second. Luna stepped closer. “I’m Luna.” Gray returned. Darius said, “And I’m Darius.” The creature looked between them. Not replacements. Not echoes. People. The black smoke started tearing away. Lucian shouted, “Obey me!” Kael’s body jerked. The darkness pulled toward him. His gray eyes found Luna. Then Darius. “What happens to me?” Luna didn’t lie. “I don’t know.” Fear crossed his face. Real fear. Darius let go of one shoulder and held out his hand. “You can stay what Lucian made.” The creature looked at it. “Or?” “Or choose what comes next.” Kael stared. “You’d give me that?” Darius’s voice was quiet. “You should’ve had it from the start.” Slowly, Kael took his hand. Light exploded. Black smoke ripped out and surged toward Lucian. The Shadow King raised his arms. It entered him. His body arched. Power flooded through him. Cassian’s eyes widened. “That’s what he wanted.” Lucian lowered his head. When he looked up, his eyes were black at the center. “Thank you,” he said. Kael collapsed. Darius caught him. He looked suddenly human. Fragile. Alive. Kael stared at him. “You kept her.” Darius looked at Luna. “No.” “She stayed.” A faint smile. “Better.” His eyes closed. Darius checked his pulse. “He’s alive.” Luna exhaled. The pods stopped flashing. Ethan pulled the final lever. Red lights died. The Alphas stayed asleep. For now. Lucian stood near the door, darkness rolling off him. Serena raised her sword. “You’re stronger.” “Yes.” “Why let us free Kael?” Lucian smiled. “Because I never needed his body.” His gaze locked on Darius. “I needed what was trapped inside it.” The walls cracked. He stepped back into shadow. “You gave me my first corruption back.” Darius lowered Kael into Luna’s arms and stood. “What does that mean?” Lucian’s smile widened. “It means I can finally feel love again.” For a second, hope flickered in Elara’s face. Then Lucian looked at Luna. It wasn’t tenderness. It was hunger. “And now I understand why losing her broke me.” Darius stepped in front of Luna. Lucian vanished. His last words echoed. “I won’t make that mistake twice.” The iron door slammed shut. Every pod unlocked. Hundreds of Alphas opened their eyes. And every one of them looked straight at Darius.
