The Door Between Them

1917 Words
Kael screamed again. The sound ripped through Blackwood Manor. Darius moved toward the library door, but Selene grabbed his arm. “Don’t.” His claws came out instantly. “Let go of me.” Selene did, stepping back and raising both hands—no panic, no fear. “If you go near Kael, whatever’s inside me gets to you faster.” Another scream echoed from the medical wing. Darius’s face hardened. “He’s my brother.” “And you’re what it wants.” Luna stepped between them. “So what exactly is inside you?” Selene pressed her palm over the doorway mark. Black lines kept shifting under her skin, pulsing with her heartbeat. “I don’t know its real name.” The false Cassian stood in the corner, pale cloth hanging still around its body. The real Cassian drew his silver blade. “Then tell us what the Vale elders called it.” Selene looked at him. “The Hollow King.” Gabriel went still. “I’ve heard that name.” Everyone turned to him. He stared at the faceless creature. “My father used it to scare us when we were kids.” Cassian’s human eye narrowed. “So it wasn’t just a story.” “No.” Gabriel’s voice dropped. “He said the Hollow King existed before wolves learned to shift. Before true bonds. It didn’t have a body, so it moved between people through fear.” Selene nodded. “The elders believed the crown was made to keep it out of the living world.” Darius looked toward the medical wing. “And Kael is becoming its body.” “Not fully.” “Explain.” “The black fragment carries Command,” Selene said. “It can prep Kael’s body, but it can’t open the final passage.” Her gaze dropped to Darius’s marked wrist. “You can.” The room went quiet. Luna tightened her grip on his hand. Darius looked at Selene, cold. “I’m not opening anything.” “You might not get a choice.” “He always has a choice,” Luna said. Selene’s gray eyes shifted to her. “You don’t understand this door.” “Then help me.” “It doesn’t open with magic.” “Then what does it open with?” Selene looked at their joined hands. “A bond.” Luna felt Darius’s fear before his face even changed. The Hollow King wanted him because of that connection. Choice and Command. Two forces tied together by something stronger than either mark. Love. The false Cassian lifted a hand. Darius stepped in front of Luna. The faceless thing copied him perfectly. Then it spoke in Darius’s voice. “Stay behind me.” Luna’s skin went cold. Darius growled. The imitation turned its hood toward her. “You like that line.” “No,” Luna said. “I like the man who’s still learning not to say it.” The creature tilted its head. The real Darius glanced at her. “That almost sounded like a compliment.” “Don’t ruin it.” The false Cassian shifted. Pale cloth collapsed inward, reshaping. In seconds, Darius stood in the corner. Not a rough copy. Every scar. Every line. Even the black mark on his wrist. Luna’s heart reacted before her mind caught up. The creature smiled with Darius’s mouth. “You recognize me.” “I recognize his face.” “His scent?” It stepped closer. Darius moved toward it. Cassian blocked him with his silver blade. “Don’t touch it.” The false Darius kept his eyes on Luna. “His voice?” “Not really.” The smile thinned. Luna added, “You’re missing the irritation.” The real Darius raised a brow. “I’m irritating?” “Constantly.” The imitation looked between them. Confused. It understood looks. Voice. Instinct. But not the small flaws that made someone real. Luna felt Darius’s hand settle at her lower back. The copy mirrored it on empty air. Its expression twisted. The manor shook again. Kael screamed. This time, Darius dropped to one knee. Pain ripped through their bond. Luna caught him. Black veins spread from his wrist toward his heart. “Darius.” “I’m fine.” “You’re on the floor.” “Temporarily.” The false Darius smiled. “Go to him.” Selene’s doorway mark widened. Darkness stretched from her chest toward the medical wing. Then another black thread shot toward Darius. Luna raised her golden hand. It hit her power and wrapped around it. Instead of breaking, it pulled. The Hollow King was using Luna’s Choice to reach Command. Selene cried out. “Let go of her!” She grabbed the black thread with both hands. It burned through her palms. Luna stared. Selene was holding the door shut. Not for herself. For them. “Help her,” Gabriel said. Luna reached for her sister. Selene pulled back. “No.” “You can’t hold it alone.” “I’ve done it my whole life.” “That doesn’t mean you should.” The darkness pulled harder. Darius stood again beside Luna, despite the pain. “What happens if Luna touches you?” Selene’s breathing turned ragged. “Our connection gets stronger.” “And the Hollow King can cross?” “Maybe.” Luna stepped closer anyway. Selene shook her head. “You don’t know me.” “No.” “You don’t trust me.” “Not yet.” “That’s not comforting.” “It’s honest.” Selene’s mouth trembled. For the first time, she looked less like a threat and more like someone who’d spent her whole life waiting to be replaced. Luna held out her hand. “I’m not taking your place.” “That’s what they said you’d do.” “They lied.” “You don’t know that.” “No.” Luna looked at the black lines crawling up Selene’s throat. “But I know what it feels like when people decide who you’re supposed to be.” Selene stared at her hand. The false Darius stepped closer. “Take it,” he said in Darius’s voice. “Let her share it.” The real Darius looked at Luna. “It wants you connected.” “I know.” “Then don’t touch her.” Luna turned to him. His eyes were full of fear. Not Command. Not the crown. Him. She touched his cheek instead. “I need you to trust me.” “I do.” “That was too fast.” “I hate this.” “I know.” “If the connection opens—” “You pull me back.” “And if it takes you?” Luna’s throat tightened. “Then I pull you back.” Darius closed his eyes. Rested his forehead against hers. “One step.” “One step.” He let her go. Luna turned back to Selene. Her hand stayed open. “You decide.” The darkness tightened around Selene. Her knees buckled. Gabriel stepped forward. “My daughter.” Selene looked at him. Pain crossed her face. “You don’t get to call me that yet.” Gabriel stopped. “You’re right.” No push. No demand. He stayed back. “But you shouldn’t have to do this alone.” Selene’s eyes filled. For a moment, she looked at all of them. Gabriel. Luna. Darius. Even Cassian, the one she was taught to fear. Then she took Luna’s hand. The library vanished. Luna stood in a black corridor. Doors lined both sides. Hundreds of them. Each one carved with Selene’s name. Some in a child’s messy handwriting. Others cut deep into the wood. At the far end stood a throne made of empty armor. No one sat in it. Only darkness. Selene appeared beside Luna. She looked younger. No scar. No doorway mark. Just a scared girl holding a silver bracelet. “This is where he lives,” Selene whispered. “The Hollow King?” “He calls himself that because he has nothing else.” The empty armor turned. A voice came from inside. “Luna Vale.” The doors opened. Memories flooded through. Selene as a baby in the snow. Vale elders replacing her name with Vessel. A child locked in a stone room while something whispered through the walls. A young woman learning to close the door by hating herself enough to leave nothing worth entering. Luna’s chest ached. “You thought being empty would keep him out.” Selene stared down. “It did.” “No.” Luna took her hand again. “It kept you trapped with him.” The armor rose. “You cannot free her.” Luna faced it. “Why?” “She is the door.” “That’s something she carries.” “It’s what she is.” Selene flinched. Luna held tighter. “No.” Golden light filled the corridor. “She is Selene Vale.” The doors shook. The Hollow King stepped out of the armor. Its body shifted. Kael. Gabriel. Darius. Then Luna herself. “You can’t close a door without locking someone out.” Luna looked at Selene. “Maybe.” Then she gave a small smile. “But we can choose who we let in.” Another presence filled the corridor. Darius. Not physically. Through the bond. Warm. Steady. Waiting, not forcing. Selene felt him. Her eyes widened. “He could come in.” “Yes.” “And you trust him?” “Yes.” “Completely?” Luna thought of the crown. The commands. The fear. The mistakes still possible. “No.” Selene stared. Luna added, “I trust him honestly.” The Hollow King screamed. The corridor cracked. Darius’s voice reached her. Luna. Her name first. Always. She smiled. I’m here. The bond opened—not for the Hollow King, but for Darius. He stood beside her in feeling, not form. The creature rushed him. Selene stepped in front. “No.” The word shook every door. The Hollow King stopped. Selene lifted her bracelet. “I’m not your passage.” The doorway mark appeared over her heart. Then started to close. The creature’s face twisted. “You were made for me.” Selene looked at Luna. “No.” Her fingers tightened around her sister’s. “I was born for myself.” The black corridor exploded into silver light. Luna woke on the library floor. Darius’s arms were around her. Selene lay beside them, unconscious but breathing. The false Cassian was gone. The mark over Selene’s heart had become a thin black scar. Gabriel knelt beside her. He stopped just short of touching her. “Selene?” Her eyes opened slowly. Gray. Clear. She looked at Luna. “You didn’t take my place.” “No.” “You opened the door.” “Only because you let me.” A scream echoed from the medical wing. Then stopped. The reflected Book snapped open. Kael’s name appeared. The black crown fragment beside it cracked. Darius helped Luna stand. “Is he free?” Selene looked down the hall. “No.” Her face tightened. “We closed one path.” The Book wrote another line. THE HOLLOW KING HAS LOST THE DOOR. Then another formed. HE HAS CHOSEN THE BOND. Darius’s mark burned. Luna’s answered. And inside the bond between them, something opened its eyes.
