The Crown’s First Servant

1314 Words
“You don’t control the Order,” Darius said. Cassian’s expression cracked for a moment, as if the words had struck something buried rather than merely spoken aloud. The Book hovered open between them, its pages turning without wind, without touch, as though it were reading the air itself. CASSIAN DRAKE — BOUND. FIRST SERVANT OF THE CROWN. The words pulsed faintly, like a heartbeat that did not belong to any living body in the room. Cassian’s hand twitched, and for the briefest instant he hid the mark in his palm, curling his fingers as if concealment could undo truth. Behind him, the wolves remained crouched, perfectly still, their eyes tracking every breath in the room. They were not animals in the ordinary sense; they were extensions of will, sharpened into obedience. “You founded the Order of Ash,” Luna said, her voice steady but edged with disbelief, “but the crown controls you.” Cassian’s gaze snapped to her. “You understand nothing.” “That usually means she understands too much,” Mason said under his breath. Evelyn sighed, rubbing her temple. “Don’t antagonize the immortal commander. We are already standing on a blade’s edge.” Ethan held his injured hand close to his chest. Dark veins spread from the broken crown fragment embedded in his skin, like ink bleeding through parchment. “You said you carried the mark willingly,” he told Cassian. “I did.” “The Book says you’re a servant.” Cassian’s jaw tightened. “Service and slavery are not the same thing.” “They are when no one can refuse,” Luna said. For a moment, something ancient and tired flickered in Cassian’s eyes. “You think you understand choice.” “I know what it feels like to lose it,” she replied. The air in the chamber tightened, as if the walls themselves were listening. Darius stepped closer to Luna without thinking, instinct pulling him forward like gravity. Cassian noticed immediately. “You lean on him quickly.” “I stand beside him,” Luna corrected. “Until the bond changes that.” “It won’t.” Cassian raised his hand slightly. Pressure rolled through the room like an invisible tide. The wolves rose in perfect sync. Ethan flinched. “Fight it.” One wolf hesitated—just a fraction of a second—then broke formation and lunged. Darius moved faster. He intercepted it mid-air, catching it and pinning it to the ground without striking a killing blow. The creature trembled beneath his grip, then slowly stilled, retreating back into formation as if ashamed of its own defiance. Cassian studied him with renewed interest. “Kael would have killed it.” “My name is Darius.” “And you keep saying that.” “Because you keep ignoring it.” Luna stepped forward. “They aren’t your army.” “No,” Cassian said quietly. “They aren’t.” The Book turned again, pages flipping faster now, as if something within it had become impatient. BINDING ORIGIN: LUCIAN VESPER. Cassian froze. Ethan stared at the page. “You said he had no hold over you.” “He doesn’t.” The Book turned again, harder this time, as if forced. COMMAND PASSES THROUGH THE CROWN. Ethan dropped to one knee as pain surged through him. Luna moved instantly, kneeling beside him. “We need to remove it.” “It cannot be removed,” Cassian said. Darius stepped forward. “Unacceptable.” “Ancient law doesn’t bend,” Cassian replied. “Everything bends,” Darius said. Ethan forced a breath through clenched teeth. “I found it in our ruined house.” Luna stiffened at the memory, something old and buried surfacing in her expression. Cassian’s voice softened slightly. “It waited for Guardian blood.” Ethan looked up at him. “You said it would help me find Luna.” “It did.” “It’s killing me.” “The crown doesn’t care,” Cassian said. Luna’s voice hardened. “Neither do you.” A flicker crossed Cassian’s face—too quick to name, too human to ignore. The Book began turning faster, pages blurring. Names flashed across it like falling stars: Ethan Vale. Cassian Drake. Lucian Vesper. Solara. Kael. Darius. Luna Vale. Then it stopped. THE BROKEN CROWN REQUIRES TWO LIVING BEARERS. Ethan went pale. ONE BEARS COMMAND. ONE BEARS CHOICE. The crown fragment in Ethan’s chest pulsed violently. At the same time, Luna’s Sun Mark answered, glowing faintly beneath her skin. Cassian stepped forward slowly. “It divides power between bearer and Queen.” Darius moved closer to Luna immediately. “She isn’t part of this.” “It already chose her,” Cassian said. Ethan shook his head. “It recognized her. Not chose her.” The Book added one final line, darker than the rest: CHOICE BREAKS COMMAND. Cassian’s voice sharpened. “If you touch it, it will test your bond.” Darius tensed. “Test how?” “It will force a command through him,” Cassian said. Luna looked at Darius. “What command?” Cassian hesitated for the first time. “The one he fears most.” Silence fell so completely it felt like suffocation. Darius said quietly, “Protect you. Keep you. Never let you go.” Cassian nodded once. Luna exhaled slowly. “Then we break it.” Darius stepped back immediately. “No.” The bond between them snapped taut with the distance. Luna reached for him instinctively. “We can save Ethan.” “And lose you,” he said. “I’ll come back.” “That’s not certainty.” “It’s choice.” Darius finally looked at her fully, as if seeing every possible future at once. “It will turn my love into command.” “I’ll refuse it.” “You might not be able to.” “Then remind me,” she said softly. He hesitated, then returned to her side. “I love you.” “I know.” “If I fail—” “You won’t.” They returned to Ethan together. Luna placed her hand on the crown fragment. Pain exploded instantly. The bond opened like a wound. Darius’s instincts surged violently: protect, keep, control. The crown shaped those instincts into language. “Luna Vale,” Darius said, voice splitting under pressure. “Come to me.” Her body moved against her will. “Stay with me,” he forced through clenched teeth. Warmth tried to override her thoughts, wrapping around her mind like chains made of affection. Darius whispered, breaking through it with effort that cost him everything: “Say no.” The crown punished him immediately. He collapsed to one knee. Luna shook, fighting the pull. “No.” The Book flared violently. BELONG TO HIM. Luna met Darius’s eyes through the storm of command. “I belong to myself.” The crown shattered. Light erupted outward in a violent wave. Ethan collapsed, finally free. The wolves howled as if mourning something ancient breaking. The broken crown split into black and gold fragments, then drifted upward above Luna like ash refusing to fall. The Book burned its final declaration into the air: LUNA VALE — BEARER OF CHOICE. Cassian fell to his knees, his mark cracking open. One of his eyes shifted, briefly becoming fully human. “It’s not over,” he said hoarsely. “Lucian felt it.” Ethan stood slowly, breathing for the first time without pain. “Let him come.” Cassian looked at Luna with something like warning and recognition. “You broke command.” The crown hovered above her still, waiting. “Now Lucian will come for the heart it chose.” Luna tightened her grip on Darius’s hand. “And he will tear it out of you,” Cassian said.
