What Love Sounds Like to a Monster

1783 Words
THE HOLLOW KING IS LEARNING TO LOVE. THAT IS WHY IT HAS BECOME TRULY DANGEROUS. No one spoke for a few seconds. Kael stared at the reflected Book from the medical bed. “That doesn’t make sense.” Selene stood near the doorway, one hand resting over the thin black scar above her heart. “It does to him.” Darius’s expression hardened. “Explain.” “The Hollow King has existed without a body, a name, or a bond for thousands of years,” Selene said. “It understands fear because fear opens people. It understands hunger because hunger makes them reach.” Her eyes moved to Luna. “But love was always closed to it.” “Until it touched our bond,” Luna said. Selene nodded. “Now it’s learning through Kael.” Kael’s face tightened. “I never agreed to teach it anything.” “No,” Luna replied. “You didn’t.” Darius crossed to the bed. The silver wards around Kael flickered as his marked wrist came closer. Kael immediately leaned back. “Stay away.” Darius stopped. The rejection hit through the strange connection between them. Luna felt it too. Kael’s fear. Darius’s hurt. And beneath both— A third presence. Interested. Listening. Darius stepped back without argument. “Fine.” Kael looked surprised. “You’re not going to tell me I’m being unreasonable?” “No.” “You think I am.” “Yes.” Luna gave Darius a look. He lifted one shoulder. “You asked for honesty.” Kael almost smiled. The emotion barely formed before black veins flashed beneath his skin. A cold pulse moved through Luna and Darius’s bond. Not an attack. An imitation. The Hollow King had felt amusement and was trying to copy it. Selene went pale. “It’s copying him.” Kael gripped the blankets. “Get it out.” Cassian approached the ward circle. “I may be able to cut the connection.” “No,” Selene said. Everyone turned toward her. Cassian’s damaged face remained unreadable. “You object?” “If you cut it suddenly, the Hollow King may follow the strongest remaining path.” Her gaze moved toward Darius. “The bond.” Darius didn’t hesitate. “Then let it.” Luna caught his hand. “No.” “If it leaves Kael—” “And enters you?” “I can fight it.” “That’s not the point.” “It is exactly the point.” Luna stepped closer. “You don’t get to volunteer our bond without asking me.” The words stopped him. Darius’s jaw tightened. Then he looked down. “You’re right.” Kael stared at them. “You corrected him.” “Yes,” Luna said. “And he just accepted it?” “Not happily.” Darius glanced at her. “I’m standing here.” “That’s not the same as being happy.” Kael looked almost fascinated. Another pulse moved beneath his skin. This one warmer. The Hollow King was listening again. Luna turned toward Selene. “How does it learn?” “Through emotional patterns. Repetition. What people do when they’re afraid, hurt, wanted, rejected.” Ethan folded his arms. “So it’s been inside Kael for a few hours and already knows more about the family than most of us.” “That’s not reassuring,” Gabriel said. “No,” Selene agreed. “It isn’t.” The reflected Book began writing again. LOVE IS THE PERMISSION TO ENTER. Luna stared at the sentence. “No.” The ink darkened. LOVE OPENS EVERY DOOR. Darius stepped beside her. “It’s asking a question.” Selene frowned. “What question?” Luna understood. “Whether love and permission are the same.” Kael looked toward the Book. “They aren’t.” The black fragment beneath his chest pulsed. A voice entered the room. Not through Kael’s mouth. Through the bond connecting all three of them. Why? Darius’s claws emerged. Luna tightened her grip on him. “It spoke.” Kael’s eyes widened. “I heard it too.” The voice came again. Curious. Almost gentle. Why does love not permit entry? Selene backed toward the wall. “Don’t answer.” Luna looked at her. “Why?” “It turns answers into doors.” “Silence won’t stop it from learning.” “It might slow it down.” Darius looked at the reflected Book. “It already knows fear creates distance.” Luna faced Kael. The black veins had stopped spreading. The Hollow King was waiting. So was everyone else. Luna spoke carefully. “Love isn’t permission because loving someone doesn’t erase their boundaries.” The room stayed still. The voice answered. Darius enters you. Heat rose instantly into Luna’s face. Ethan covered his eyes. “I hate ancient magic.” Darius’s expression turned lethal. “Choose your next words carefully.” The voice seemed confused. You share body. Mind. Power. Luna forced herself not to look away. “We share what we agree to share.” Then love is agreement. “No,” Darius said. “Love continues even when agreement doesn’t.” The Hollow King went silent. Kael’s gray eyes moved between them. Darius continued. “Luna disagrees with me a lot.” “Constantly,” she corrected. “I was being generous.” “You were lying.” A quiet laugh moved through the room. Not from anyone standing there. The Hollow King had copied the sound. Luna’s skin prickled. It was learning humor too. Then the voice asked: If she refuses you, why stay? Darius looked at Luna. The answer passed through their bond before he spoke. “Because I love her. Not her obedience.” The black fragment cracked slightly beneath Kael’s skin. He gasped. Ronan moved toward him. Kael raised one hand. “I’m fine.” “You don’t look fine.” “I’m temporarily terrible.” Darius’s mouth twitched. “That was mine.” Kael looked at him. “I know.” For the first time, the connection between them felt less like invasion. More like resemblance. The Hollow King felt that too. Its next question entered all three minds. What happens when love leaves? Darius went rigid. Luna felt the old fear open inside him. A door. The Hollow King noticed. Darkness spread through the bond. Images struck Luna. Her walking away from Blackwood. Darius standing alone at the open gates. Her choosing another life. Another man. A future where he opened the door as promised and never saw her again. His pain flooded her. Not accusation. Terror. The Hollow King pressed deeper. She can leave. Darius’s breathing turned rough. Luna caught his face. “Look at me.” His eyes had darkened. “She can leave,” the voice repeated through him. “Yes,” Luna said. Darius flinched. The darkness strengthened. Selene shouted, “Luna, stop!” Luna didn’t look away from Darius. “She can leave,” the Hollow King whispered. “And so can he,” Luna said. The darkness paused. Darius’s eyes searched hers. Luna continued. “I don’t love Darius because he has no exit.” Her thumbs brushed his cheeks. “I love him because every day he stays, he chooses me again.” Darius’s breathing slowed. “And every day you stay?” he asked. “I choose you again.” The shadow inside the bond recoiled. Not from power. From something it couldn’t turn into ownership. Darius covered one of Luna’s hands. “What if one day you don’t?” “It will hurt.” His eyes closed briefly. “But I won’t lie to keep you calm.” He opened them again. Gray returned. “And I won’t cage you to avoid the answer.” The darkness cracked. Kael screamed. The black fragment burst from his chest. It hovered above the bed, beating like a second heart. Cassian raised his sword. “Now.” Selene moved between him and the fragment. “No!” “It’s exposed.” “And listening.” “That’s why we destroy it.” The fragment twisted. A shadow formed around it. Not a king. Not a monster. A child. Small. Faceless. Alone. Gabriel whispered, “What is that?” Selene stared. “The first shape it ever made for itself.” The child looked toward Luna. Love chooses again tomorrow. Luna swallowed. “Yes.” Then love can end tomorrow. “Yes.” The child’s body shook. The Hollow King had discovered uncertainty. And it was terrified. Darius stepped beside Luna. The shadow child turned toward him. How do you survive it? Darius’s answer came slowly. “You don’t survive it in advance.” The child tilted its head. “You live today,” Luna said. “And tomorrow?” it asked through Kael’s voice. Darius looked at her. “Tomorrow, we ask again.” The fragment trembled. For one impossible second, Luna felt sympathy for it. A being born without a name. Without a body. Without anyone who had ever chosen it. Then the shadow child smiled. The expression was wrong. Too wide. Too knowing. Then I choose now. The fragment shot toward Darius. Luna raised her hand. Golden light struck it, but the black metal split into dozens of pieces. They raced around her power and entered the bond from every direction. Darius grabbed her. “Luna!” The medical wing vanished. They stood together in darkness. No Kael. No Selene. No family. Only the two of them. And the Hollow King. It no longer wore a child’s body. It wore Darius. Then Luna. Then both faces at once. “You taught me love requires choice,” it said. Its voice carried both of theirs together. “So I choose you.” Luna’s blood went cold. Darius pulled her behind him. The creature smiled. “Still protecting.” Luna stepped back beside Darius. “Still learning,” she said. The Hollow King opened both arms. The darkness around them became Blackwood Estate. Every room. Every memory. Every kiss. Every argument. The private shape of their love laid open around a stranger. Darius’s fury shook the bond. “Get out.” The Hollow King smiled with Luna’s mouth. “No.” It touched the place in the bond where their choices met. “And now that you taught me permission…” The entire bond locked around them. “…I take yours away.” Outside, Kael woke with solid black eyes. He sat up and tore through the silver wards. Selene backed away. The reflected Book wrote one final warning. LOVE WITHOUT FREEDOM HAS ENTERED THE WORLD.
