AURELIA.
The name burned across the reflected Book.
The ancient king stepped back again.
Only one step.
But Luna saw it.
So did Darius.
Fear had slipped into the face of the man who claimed he invented Command.
Elara stood beside the silver throne, broken chains hanging from her wrists.
“Say her name,” Elara told Luna.
The ancient king’s eyes went dark.
“Don’t.”
Power slammed through the hall.
Mason, Evelyn, Serena, and the others dropped to the floor. Their weapons clattered against the stone.
Darius stayed standing beside Luna, but his body locked up as the black mark around his wrist flared.
The king looked at him.
“Make her close the Book.”
Command rushed through the room.
Darius grabbed his own wrist.
“No.”
“You carry my power.”
“It isn’t yours anymore.”
“It was born from me.”
Darius’s jaw tightened as black fire crawled up his arm.
“So was failure.”
Luna almost smiled.
The ancient king didn’t.
He raised one hand.
Darius’s fingers moved toward Luna’s throat.
He grabbed his own arm with the other hand and stopped inches from her skin.
Horror filled his eyes.
“Move away from me.”
Luna didn’t move.
His voice came rougher.
“Luna.”
She reached up and wrapped both hands around his shaking wrist.
“I’m here.”
“I might hurt you.”
“You’re fighting him.”
“It might not be enough.”
“Then I’ll fight too.”
The king laughed.
“This is what love always turns into.”
His dark gaze moved between them.
“One person begging the other not to destroy them.”
“No,” Luna said.
She pressed Darius’s palm over her heartbeat.
“This is love refusing to leave someone alone while they’re fighting themselves.”
Darius closed his eyes.
The crown pushed harder.
Luna felt it through their bond.
The ancient king wanted Darius to command her.
To close the Book.
To erase Aurelia’s name before it could be spoken.
Darius’s fingers curled against Luna’s chest.
Not tightening.
Just holding on.
“Say it,” he whispered.
The king’s expression shifted.
“No.”
Darius opened his eyes.
They were gray, ringed with black fire.
“Say her name.”
Luna looked at the Book.
“Aurelia.”
The name hit the estate like thunder.
Golden light burst from the pages.
Every window shattered.
The ancient king screamed.
The bone crown split down the middle.
A crack tore through the floor, racing from the hidden staircase to the manor doors.
Outside, the controlled Blackwood wolves gasped like they’d just surfaced from deep water.
Mason dropped to his hands.
Evelyn crawled toward him.
“Mason.”
He looked up.
His eyes were his own again.
“Evelyn.”
She threw her arms around him.
Mason held her so tightly her silver key pressed between them.
Serena’s sword slipped from her fingers.
Maris caught her before she hit the ground.
One by one, the warriors started waking up from the king’s control.
The ancient king stared at them.
“No.”
Elara walked up the hidden stairs.
With each step, the chains on her wrists faded more.
“You erased her name,” Elara said. “But you couldn’t erase what she made.”
“She made nothing.”
“She made the first bond.”
The king laughed bitterly.
“I made bonds.”
“You made chains.”
Elara reached the top and stopped beside the reflected Book.
“Aurelia made the space between two people where either of them could leave.”
Luna’s golden mark warmed.
Darius’s black one burned, but the pain started to ease.
“The first mating bond,” Luna said.
Elara looked at her.
“The first chosen bond.”
The king’s face twisted.
“She betrayed me.”
“No,” Elara said. “She refused you.”
That hit him harder than anything else.
Darius lowered his marked hand.
Luna kept holding it.
“Who was Aurelia?” she asked.
Elara’s blue eyes moved to the burning name.
“The first woman the world tried to crown.”
“Before Solara?”
“Long before.”
Lyra stepped into the ruined hall behind Gabriel and Ethan. Her golden eyes locked on Aurelia’s name.
“I remember her.”
Everyone turned.
Lyra touched her temple.
“Not clearly. Solara knew the stories.”
“What stories?” Luna asked.
Lyra looked at the ancient king.
“That Aurelia loved a man who wanted to protect her from everything.”
The king’s face hardened.
“I did protect her.”
“You locked her up,” Elara said.
“I kept her alive.”
“You kept her close.”
“Because she belonged beside me.”
Luna felt Darius go still.
The king’s words echoed every temptation Command had ever whispered into him.
Close the gates.
Keep Luna inside.
Protect what never leaves.
The ancient king noticed.
He looked at Darius and smiled.
“You understand.”
Darius’s grip tightened around Luna’s hand.
“Yes.”
Luna turned toward him.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
Darius continued.
“I understand why you called the cage love.”
The king’s smile widened.
“And?”
“And I understand why she left you.”
The smile dropped.
Darius stepped forward.
“You were afraid.”
“I feared nothing.”
“You feared that if Aurelia stayed free, she might choose someone else.”
The king’s eyes burned.
“She did.”
“Then she had the right.”
Power exploded from the ancient ruler.
The walls shook.
The controlled weapons lifted into the air.
Darius stepped in front of Luna.
She grabbed his arm.
“Stay with me.”
He looked down at her.
The old instinct fought inside him.
Shield her.
Take the hit.
Decide everything for her.
Then he moved beside her.
Together, they faced the flying blades.
Luna raised her golden hand.
Darius lifted his black-marked one.
Choice and Command met.
Not merging.
Balancing.
Luna gave the weapons another option.
Darius gave that option direction.
The blades stopped.
Then dropped harmlessly to the floor.
The ancient king stared.
“You used Command.”
Darius looked at his hand.
“Yes.”
No shame in it.
Luna’s shoulder touched his.
“And he used it with me.”
Darius met her gaze.
Not over her.
Not against her.
With her.
The crown mark around his wrist shifted.
The black lines stayed, but thin gold cracks spread through them.
Elara inhaled sharply.
“The crown is rewriting itself.”
The king lunged.
Too fast for anyone to stop.
His hand closed around Luna’s throat.
Darius’s power snapped.
“Let her go!”
The command hit the hall.
The king’s fingers opened.
Luna fell back into Darius.
The king stared at his own hand.
Shock crossed his face.
“You commanded me.”
Darius held Luna against his chest.
“Yes.”
“No bearer can command the source.”
“Maybe you’re not the source.”
The king went still.
Elara smiled.
“That’s what Aurelia’s name reveals.”
The reflected Book turned another page.
New words appeared.
COMMAND WAS NOT CREATED BY THE FIRST KING.
The next line formed slowly.
IT WAS GIVEN TO HIM.
The king rushed the Book.
Evelyn stepped in front of him.
Her silver key burned in her hand.
“Move,” he ordered.
Evelyn shook.
Her knees bent.
Mason caught her from behind.
“You don’t have to do this alone.”
“I know.”
She leaned into him.
Then straightened.
“No.”
The king’s command broke against Balance.
The Book wrote again.
AURELIA GAVE COMMAND TO THE MAN SHE LOVED SO HE COULD PROTECT THEIR PEOPLE.
Luna read the next line.
HE USED IT TO CONTROL HER.
Silence swallowed the room.
The king looked at Elara.
“You’re lying.”
“The Book remembers.”
“Books can be rewritten.”
“Names can,” Luna said. “Choices can’t.”
The final line appeared.
AURELIA TOOK BACK HER LOVE, BUT COMMAND REFUSED TO LEAVE HIM.
Darius looked at the black mark on his wrist.
“It became the crown.”
Elara nodded.
“Power without the bond that gave it meaning.”
The ancient king’s face changed.
For the first time, he looked old.
Not in body.
In everything else.
Thousands of years of rage collapsed into grief.
“She promised forever.”
Luna’s anger softened, but she didn’t move closer.
“Forever isn’t permission.”
“She loved me.”
“Maybe she did.”
“She chose me.”
“Until you stopped choosing her.”
The bone crown cracked again.
A piece fell away.
He stared at Luna.
“You carry Aurelia.”
“No.”
The answer came fast.
Luna stepped closer to Darius.
“I carry myself.”
The reflected Book agreed.
Aurelia’s name faded from gold to silver.
Beneath it appeared:
FIRST BEARER OF CHOICE.
Then Luna’s name formed below it.
CURRENT BEARER OF CHOICE.
Not a replacement.
Not a repeat.
A line of women who refused to be owned.
The king looked at Darius.
“And you think you’re different?”
Darius answered immediately.
“No.”
Luna looked up at him.
He continued.
“I’m capable of every mistake you made.”
The honesty filled the room.
Darius lifted Luna’s hand.
“But I ask her to tell me when I do.”
“And when she leaves?” the king demanded.
Pain flashed through Darius.
Luna felt it.
He didn’t hide it.
“If Luna chooses to leave me,” Darius said, “I’ll break.”
Her chest tightened.
“But I’ll open the door.”
The king stared at him, unable to understand.
Luna turned fully toward Darius.
“I’m not leaving.”
“I know.”
“You sound pretty sure.”
A faint smile touched his mouth.
“I’m hopeful.”
She kissed him.
Not because they’d won.
Not because it was over.
But because Darius had just given her the freedom he feared most.
His arms wrapped around her.
Careful.
Chosen.
When they separated, the ancient king wasn’t looking at them anymore.
He stared down the hidden staircase.
At the silver throne.
At where he had kept Elara chained.
“Where is Aurelia?” he whispered.
Elara’s expression softened with old sadness.
“Gone.”
“No.”
“She lived.”
“No.”
“She loved again.”
The king’s body began to fracture.
Black light spilled through the cracks.
“She died free.”
The bone crown split apart.
A roar shook Blackwood Estate.
The king reached toward Luna.
Not attacking.
Begging.
“Give me her name.”
Luna closed the reflected Book.
“No.”
He screamed as darkness swallowed him.
But before he vanished, a shadow moved behind Elara.
Lucian stepped out from the hidden staircase.
His hand closed around her throat.
The ancient king smiled through his destruction.
Lucian looked at Luna.
“Thanks for weakening him.”
He dragged Elara back.
Evelyn’s silver key flew, but the hidden doors slammed shut before it reached them.
Lucian’s voice echoed from below.
“Now I can finally take what he stole from me.”
The floor sealed.
Elara was gone.
And the reflected Book opened to a single sentence.
BALANCE HAS BEEN TAKEN.
