The Crown They Refused

1984 Words
The three pieces of metal rose from the broken floor. Black. It pulsed like a wound in the air, swallowing what little light remained. Gold. It shimmered with a false warmth, like sunlight remembered rather than lived. Silver. It cut through the darkness in thin, trembling threads, sharp as breath held too long. They turned slowly above the shattered mirror, pulling light from Darius, Luna, and Evelyn. Luna’s golden mark burned. Darius’s black veins spread past his collar. Evelyn screamed as silver light wrapped around her arm and dragged her toward the forming crown. Mason caught her around the waist. “I’ve got you.” The silver force pulled harder. Mason’s boots slid across the floor. Evelyn gripped his arms. “Let go.” “No.” “It’s pulling you too.” “Then it has excellent taste.” “Mason.” “I just got you. I’m not letting ancient jewelry ruin this.” Despite the pain, Evelyn made a broken sound that almost became a laugh. The crown reacted. Silver light snapped around Mason’s throat and threw him backward. He crashed into a wooden crate. “Mason!” Evelyn lunged toward him, but the silver mark stopped her. Darius reached for the crown. Luna caught his hand. “Don’t touch it.” “It’s hurting them.” “It wants you to react.” “I am reacting.” “With Command.” Black fire had already gathered around his fingers. The crown whispered through their bond. Take control. Complete what was started. Wear us. Darius’s eyes darkened. Luna stepped in front of him. “Look at me.” “I am.” “No. You’re looking through me at the threat.” His jaw tightened. Evelyn cried out again. The silver fragment pulled closer to the black and gold pieces. They were almost joined. Darius looked toward her. “We don’t have time.” “We have enough time not to become exactly what Lucian wants.” “And if waiting kills her?” Luna felt the fear beneath his anger. Not only fear for Evelyn. Fear that every hesitation would cost someone he loved. Command fed on that belief. Decide faster. Take control. Never risk uncertainty. Luna pressed her palm over Darius’s heart. “You’re not alone in the decision.” His breathing remained rough. “No.” “You don’t sound convinced.” “I’m trying.” “That’s enough for this second.” Mason pushed himself upright. Blood ran from his temple. Evelyn stared at him. “Stay back.” He wiped the blood with his sleeve. “That sounded like an order.” “It was a request.” “Denied.” “Mason!” He stepped toward her again. The crown sent another streak of silver light across the room. This time, Mason ducked. The light shattered a table behind him. He looked almost pleased. “It’s predictable.” “It’s ancient magic,” Evelyn said. “Not a bar fight.” “Everything becomes a bar fight if you’re creative.” Darius glanced at Luna. “He may be worse than you.” “He’s definitely louder.” The crown pulsed. A wave of power struck the room. Everyone dropped except Luna, Darius, and Evelyn. The three marks locked onto one another. Luna felt Darius’s heartbeat inside her chest. Then Evelyn’s fear. Then something else. Lucian. Not physically present. But listening through the crown. His voice slid between their thoughts. You keep refusing what you already are. Luna looked at Darius. He had heard it too. Evelyn gripped her marked arm. “Get out of my head.” Lucian laughed. Balance. Command. Choice. The crown pieces touched. A shock wave tore through the storage room. The walls disappeared. For one breath, Luna saw an endless dark sky. Lucian stood beneath it, holding the completed crown. Not wearing it. Offering it. Take it willingly, he said. And no one else has to suffer. Images formed around him. Mason lying dead. Evelyn chained to a silver throne. Blackwood burning. Amara screaming as names tore through her skin. Gabriel dying in Ethan’s arms. Darius kneeling beside Luna’s body. The images struck every fear Luna had been trying not to name. Darius stepped toward Lucian. Luna grabbed his arm. “They aren’t real.” “They could be.” “Yes.” His face hardened. “He’s showing us what happens if we fail.” “No. He’s showing us why we should surrender.” Lucian smiled. Such a small distinction when the bodies begin falling. Evelyn appeared beside Luna in the darkness. Her silver mark glowed. “Mason?” “He’s outside this vision,” Luna said. “He was hurt.” “He’s alive.” “You don’t know that.” “No.” Luna took Evelyn’s hand. “But panic won’t make it more true.” Darius looked at Lucian. “What happens if we refuse the crown?” Lucian’s expression softened. You lose the power to protect them. “That wasn’t an answer.” It is the only answer that matters. Darius’s black mark pulled toward the crown. The object shifted. Its shape changed into something made for him. Heavy. Dark. Powerful enough to command every wolf in the valley. Luna felt his temptation. Not a desire to rule. A desire to guarantee safety. Lucian understood him too well. Wear it, Lucian whispered. No one will ever take Luna from you. The darkness showed Darius a future. Blackwood’s gates sealed. Enemies kneeling. Luna safe inside the estate. No wounds. No disappearances. No uncertainty. Only control. Darius stared. Luna’s chest tightened. “Darius.” His eyes remained fixed on the vision. “She’s alive there.” “She’s trapped there,” Evelyn said. Darius flinched. Luna moved in front of him. “Look at me.” His gaze lowered to hers. “If you wear it, maybe I survive,” she said. “Maybe?” “Lucian lies.” “I know.” “But even if it works, I wouldn’t be me.” Pain entered Darius’s face. “You would be alive.” “Would you love the woman left behind?” His answer came instantly. “Yes.” Luna shook her head. “You’d love the memory of me.” The crown’s whisper became louder. Keep her. Darius closed his eyes. Luna took his hand and placed it against her cheek. “You asked me once whether I could love you if the crown changed you.” His thumb moved beneath her eye. “I remember.” “I said I would call you back.” “And if I didn’t return?” “I never answered.” His eyes opened. Luna held his gaze. “If the crown takes your choices and you stop wanting them back, I will love who you were.” The words hurt them both. “But I won’t stay and call the cage devotion.” Darius’s expression shattered. Lucian’s darkness moved closer. She is already planning to leave you. Darius looked toward him. “No.” The crown pulled again. Darius tightened his hand around Luna’s. “She is reminding me that her love is real because it can end.” The black fragment cracked. Lucian’s smile vanished. Evelyn stared at the silver part of the crown. It showed her another future. Mason beside her forever. Unhurt. Unchanging. Bound so completely he could never leave. Evelyn’s face softened with longing. Then Mason’s image spoke. “I’ll always choose you.” Evelyn stepped toward him. Luna caught her hand. “That isn’t Mason.” “It sounds like him.” “No,” Darius said. “Mason would have added something irritating.” The image smiled perfectly. Too perfectly. Evelyn’s tears fell. “He could die.” “Yes,” Luna said. “I just found him.” “I know.” “I wasted years.” “Then don’t waste what you have by replacing him with something obedient.” Evelyn stared at the false Mason. “What if he changes his mind?” Luna squeezed her hand. “Then it hurts.” “That’s your comfort?” “No.” Evelyn looked at her. Luna continued quietly. “The comfort is that every day he stays means something.” The false Mason reached toward Evelyn. She stepped back. His smile disappeared. Silver cracks spread across the image. Evelyn lifted her chin. “I don’t want forever if you have to remove his right to leave.” The silver crown fragment shattered. Lucian roared. The darkness around them shook. Only the golden fragment remained. It floated toward Luna. The crown no longer showed her power. It showed peace. Her mother healed. Her father restored. Ethan laughing without bitterness. Darius free of Command. No Lucian. No war. A simple life waiting behind one decision. Complete the crown, Lucian said. Then break it yourself. Luna stared at the future. Darius moved closer. “What is it showing you?” “Everything.” “Luna.” “Everyone survives.” His hand tightened around hers. “At what cost?” The answer appeared inside her. Not spoken. Known. The crown would unite through her. Choice would become its heart. And once it did, every choice in the supernatural world would pass through Luna first. She could free everyone. She could also decide everything. The most beautiful prison imaginable. Luna looked at Darius. “I could end the war.” “Yes.” “I could remove your mark.” His expression softened. “I know.” “I could save my father.” “Maybe.” “I could keep you.” Darius lifted her hand to his lips. “You already have me.” The answer broke the vision. Not because it promised forever. Because he was choosing her now. Luna faced Lucian. “You keep offering us things love already gives freely.” His crimson eyes burned. Love cannot promise safety. “No.” Luna looked at Darius. “It promises honesty.” She looked at Evelyn. “Presence.” Then she faced Lucian again. “And room to choose again tomorrow.” The golden crown fragment flew toward Luna. Darius reached for her. She raised one hand. “No.” He stopped. Trusting her. The fragment hovered inches from her palm. Luna did not destroy it. She did not accept it. She opened her fingers. “You don’t get to choose for me.” The golden metal fell. It struck the darkness and broke in half. The vision collapsed. Luna returned to the storage room on her knees. Darius was beside her. Evelyn lay in Mason’s arms. The crown pieces dropped onto the floor. Black. It no longer pulsed. Gold. It no longer shone. Silver. It no longer cut. Separate again. Silent. Mason touched Evelyn’s face. “You came back.” She opened her eyes. “You were supposed to stay away.” “I’m bad at instructions.” She pulled him down and kissed him. Darius looked toward Luna. “The crown?” “Refused.” His shoulders lowered. Then black pain tore through their bond. Darius gasped. The mark on his wrist split open. Darkness poured from the wound and raced across the floor toward the broken crown. Lucian’s laughter echoed beneath Blackwood. Luna caught Darius as he collapsed. “What happened?” The reflected Book opened. A single message formed. THE CROWN CANNOT FORCE ITS BEARERS TO JOIN. Relief barely had time to rise. A second sentence appeared. BUT IT CAN CHOOSE NEW ONES. The three fragments lifted again. This time, they did not turn toward Luna, Darius, or Evelyn. They flew through the shattered doorway. Toward the clinic. Toward Amara. Gabriel. And the man with Darius’s face. Kael opened his gray eyes as black metal entered his chest. The crown had chosen again.
