The Man Who Opened the Door

1323 Words
Lucian’s voice echoed through the chambers beneath Blackwood. “Welcome home.” No scream. No struggle. No resistance. He welcomed the Hollow King like an old friend returning after a long journey. Above him, the reflected Book shuddered violently. Fresh ink bled across the page. THE HOST HAS ACCEPTED THE GUEST. Then— THE GUEST HAS ACCEPTED THE HOST. The second sentence darkened until the paper itself began to smoke. Aurelia had vanished. Time had returned. But something far worse had taken its place. Mutual consent. Blackwood Manor moved all at once. Darius turned toward the staircase. “We're going down.” “No.” Isolde’s voice stopped him. Everyone turned. Isolde stood between Darius and the door. “You cannot face him yet.” Darius’s jaw tightened. “He's beneath my home.” Isolde didn’t flinch. “He isn't Lucian anymore.” Darius’s voice dropped. “He's still breathing.” “Yes,” Isolde said. “Then I don't leave him there.” Isolde’s expression remained calm. “You're thinking like an Alpha.” “I am an Alpha,” Darius snapped. “You're about to fight something that wants you to,” Isolde replied evenly. Silence settled. Luna stepped beside Darius. “What happens if we go now?” she asked Isolde. Isolde looked at her instead. “The Hollow King is finally inside someone who invited him.” “That makes him stronger?” Luna asked. “It makes him... whole.” Kael looked sick. “So all this time…” he said quietly, swallowing hard, “…it was forcing itself into people who never wanted it.” “Yes,” Isolde confirmed. “And Lucian…” Kael began. “He opened the door himself,” Isolde finished. Ronan frowned. “Why?” Nobody answered. Not because they didn't know. Because they all did. Loneliness. Grief. Regret. Lucian had carried them longer than anyone realized. Far below... Lucian sat alone in the center of the ancient chamber. Darkness circled him like slow-moving water. The Hollow King’s voice came from everywhere. Why did you let me in? Lucian smiled faintly. “You asked.” The creature went quiet. No one had ever answered that way. “You've spent centuries taking,” Lucian said, looking up toward the ceiling. “I wanted to see what happened if someone gave.” The darkness rippled uneasily. You are not afraid? “I am.” Then why? Lucian leaned back against the stone wall. “Because I'm tired.” The Hollow King considered that. You wish to die. “No.” Lucian closed his eyes. “I wish to stop being alone.” The darkness hesitated. It knew loneliness. Better than any living creature. It settled beside him. Not inside. Beside. For the first time... The Hollow King chose not to consume. Above... Selene suddenly grabbed her chest. Luna caught her. “What is it?” “I can still feel him,” Selene whispered. “The Hollow King?” She nodded. “But…” Her brow furrowed. “He's quieter.” Darius frowned. “That doesn't sound reassuring.” “It isn't,” Selene admitted. Kael closed his eyes. “I hear him too.” “What is he saying?” Gabriel asked. Kael listened longer this time. Then confusion spread across his face. “He's asking questions.” “What kind?” Luna pressed. Kael’s voice softened. “He keeps asking Lucian…” He looked around the room. “…what friendship is.” Nobody spoke. Even Isolde looked unsettled. Luna turned toward the reflected Book. “Show us.” The pages flipped. Words appeared. Then dissolved into moving images. Lucian. Younger. Standing beside a laughing boy near Blackwood Lake. The image shifted. The boy grew older. Dark hair. Gray eyes. Darius. No older than twelve. He stumbled while trying to throw a spear. Lucian laughed. Not cruelly. Warmly. “Again,” Lucian said. Young Darius frowned. “I missed.” “So miss better,” Lucian replied. “I don't think that's advice.” “It isn't.” Lucian grinned. “It's experience.” The memory changed again. Teenage Darius. Angrier. Bigger. Covered in bruises after training. Lucian silently sat beside him. Neither spoke for several minutes. Finally— “You're not leaving?” Darius asked. “No,” Lucian answered. “You don't have to stay.” “I know.” Young Darius stared ahead. “…thank you.” The memory faded. Luna looked at Darius. “You never told me.” He couldn't take his eyes off the Book. “I forgot.” Gabriel frowned. “You forgot Lucian raised half the estate?” Darius shook his head. “No.” “I forgot…” His voice tightened. “…that I wasn't always alone.” The Hollow King watched the same memories through Lucian. You stayed without command. “Yes,” Lucian said. Without obligation. “Yes.” Why? Lucian smiled faintly. “Because he needed someone.” The darkness shifted. Did he ask? “No.” “Then how did you know?” Lucian looked upward again. “You pay attention.” The Hollow King went still. Nobody had ever explained care that simply. Back upstairs... Luna felt tears gathering. Not because of the memory. Because she understood something. “Darius.” He looked at her. “You've been trying to become Lucian.” His expression froze. “What?” “You keep thinking protection means carrying everything,” Luna said softly. She stepped closer. “He never carried it alone.” The realization hit him visibly. Lucian had asked others for help. Had laughed. Had rested. Had trusted. Everything Darius struggled to do. Not because Lucian had been weak. Because he had been strong enough. Isolde looked toward the floor. “If Lucian keeps speaking to it…” She didn’t finish. Cassian did. “It learns humanity.” “No,” Selene whispered. “It learns relationship.” Those words were worse. The Hollow King had learned love from Luna. Devotion from Darius. Family from Blackwood. Now… It was learning friendship. The reflected Book suddenly slammed shut. Then opened again. Fresh ink raced across every page. WARNING. Everyone looked. THE HOLLOW KING IS NO LONGER COPYING HUMANITY. Another line appeared. IT IS BECOMING HUMAN. The room fell completely silent. Ethan finally broke it. “That’s…” He looked around. “…not supposed to happen.” “No,” Isolde agreed. “It isn't.” Luna looked toward the floor beneath her feet. “If it becomes human…” She couldn't finish. Gabriel did. “It can choose.” Nobody liked that answer. Because choice changed everything. Until now… The Hollow King had been an ancient force. Predictable in its hunger. Limited by its nature. But a person… A person could become better. Or infinitely worse. Deep beneath Blackwood… Lucian smiled at the darkness. “What do you want to know next?” The Hollow King was quiet for a long time. Finally… It asked a question so simple… …and so impossibly human… that it made Lucian's heart ache. If I become someone... The darkness hesitated. As though the words themselves frightened it. ...will they still hate me? Lucian looked into the endless shadows surrounding them. He answered honestly. “Some will.” The Hollow King grew still. Lucian continued. “Some won't.” How do I know which? “You don't.” The darkness trembled. Then how do people live like this? Lucian smiled sadly. “They choose anyway.” Far above… Luna suddenly looked toward the earth beneath Blackwood. She couldn't hear the conversation. But she felt something impossible ripple through the bond connecting every ancient power. Not hope. Not forgiveness. Potential. The reflected Book slowly wrote one final sentence. THE GREATEST THREAT WAS NEVER THAT THE HOLLOW KING COULD LEARN TO LOVE. The ink paused. Then finished. IT WAS THAT HUMANITY MIGHT TEACH HIM HOW TO CHOOSE.
