The Choice Lucian Offered

The final words stayed inside the reflected Book. IT WAS THAT HUMANITY MIGHT TEACH HIM HOW TO CHOOSE. Luna stared at them. Around her, Blackwood Manor slowly recovered from the return of Time. Clocks ticked out of rhythm. Snow blew through shattered windows. Warriors moved through the corridors, checking injuries and rebuilding the boundary. Life had started again. But beneath their feet, Lucian was teaching an ancient monster how to become a person. Darius turned toward the sealed staircase. This time, Isolde didn’t stop him. She just asked, “What are you doing?” “To talk to him,” Darius said. Mason stared at him. “Talk?” “Yeah.” “To Lucian?” “Yes.” “The guy who kidn*pped half the people in this house, stole the Book, controlled Serena, trapped Alphas for centuries, and generally behaves like a personal insult to existence?” Darius looked at him. “That Lucian.” Mason glanced at Evelyn. “I liked the fighting plan better.” Evelyn touched his arm. “That’s because your fighting plans don’t involve much planning.” “They’re efficient.” “They’re concussions.” Darius ignored them and looked at Luna. “You don’t have to come.” She raised an eyebrow. “Try that again.” His mouth tightened. “I’d prefer you stayed here.” “Better.” “But?” “But no.” The bond warmed with his irritation and reluctant approval. Darius stepped closer. “If the Hollow King can choose now, it might choose you.” “It already did.” “And when you refused, it went into Lucian.” “Yes.” “What if it offers him something he can’t refuse?” Luna looked down. “It already has.” “Companionship,” Selene said quietly. Everyone turned toward her. She stood beside Cora, one hand over the place where the doorway scar had vanished. “The Hollow King isn’t promising Lucian power.” “What is it promising?” Gabriel asked. Selene’s expression hardened. “To stay.” Silence settled. Luna understood why that offer was more dangerous than a crown. Power could be resisted. Companionship, after centuries of loneliness, was harder. Darius’s gray eyes stayed fixed on the staircase. “He won’t give it up.” “No,” Luna said. “Not willingly.” Isolde approached them. “Then you can’t destroy the Hollow King without destroying Lucian.” Darius went still. “That your recommendation?” “No.” “Good.” Isolde studied him. “You still care about Lucian.” Darius’s jaw tightened. “He hurt my family.” “That wasn’t my question.” Darius looked away. Luna felt the answer through their bond. Memories he had buried were coming back. Lucian correcting his grip on a spear. Lucian sitting beside him after training. Lucian staying when Darius expected everyone to leave. “I don’t know what I feel,” Darius admitted. Luna slipped her fingers through his. “That’s okay.” His gaze found hers. “Is it?” “Yes.” “You don’t need me to hate him?” “No.” “He threatened you.” “I remember.” “He used me against you.” “I remember that too.” Darius’s voice dropped. “And you can still let me care?” Luna touched his face. “Your feelings aren’t mine to approve or deny.” The truth moved between them, quiet and close. Darius turned his head and kissed her palm. “Come with me.” Luna smiled faintly. “I was already going.” “I know.” The estate opened a path without being asked. Stone shifted beneath the damaged entrance hall, revealing the staircase that had carried Lucian into the burial chambers. No darkness rushed out. No ancient voice threatened them. Warm light glowed below. That frightened Luna more. Darius went first. Luna stayed beside him instead of behind. Selene followed with Isolde, Cassian, and Kael. Mason tried to join them. Darius stopped him. “Stay with the pack.” Mason folded his arms. “That sounded like an order.” “It was a request.” Mason looked at Evelyn. She took his hand. “We’ll keep everyone upstairs.” He sighed. “Fine.” Darius nodded. Mason caught his shoulder before he turned away. “Bring yourself back,” Mason said. Darius looked at him. Mason’s humor was gone. “Not just Luna,” Mason added. “Not just the estate. You.” Something shifted in Darius’s expression. “I’ll try.” “Good enough.” The staircase ended inside a circular chamber. Lucian sat near the far wall beside a small fire. He had taken off his black coat. His sleeves were rolled up. Darkness rested beside him in the shape of a young man. No face. No crown. Just a human outline made of shadow. Lucian looked up. “You came.” Darius stopped a few feet away. “You expected us.” “I hoped.” The shadow beside Lucian turned toward Luna. Its empty face formed gray eyes. Then golden ones. It was still copying. But slower now. Like it was starting to decide what it wanted to be. Selene moved closer to Cora. Kael pressed a hand over the fading stars on his chest. The Hollow King noticed him. You carried me. Kael held its gaze. “Without permission.” The shadow lowered its head. Yes. The apology wasn’t spoken. But the room still felt it trying to exist. Darius looked at Lucian. “Release him.” Lucian looked amused. “I’m not holding him.” “Then send him away.” “That would be choosing for him.” Darius’s jaw tightened. Lucian smiled. “You taught me that.” Luna stepped forward. “What do you want?” she asked. Lucian looked at her. “Which one of us?” “Both.” The Hollow King answered first. A name. The reflected Book opened in Luna’s hands. Its pages stayed blank. Lucian looked at the shadow. “You picked one?” No. “Why not?” The Hollow King flickered. Names create limits. Luna nodded. “They do.” The shadow seemed surprised. You agree? “Yes,” Luna said. “A name says you’re this person and not every other version of you.” That is loss. “It’s also identity.” The Hollow King looked at Lucian. He says becoming someone means losing every person I might have been. Lucian shrugged slightly. “It’s kind of true.” Luna almost laughed. Darius didn’t. “What does Lucian want?” he asked again. Lucian’s smile faded. “To leave Blackwood.” Everyone in the chamber went still. Darius stared. “You expect me to just let you walk away?” “No,” Lucian said. “Then what are you asking?” Lucian stood. The Hollow King rose with him. “I’m offering a choice.” Darius’s mark pulsed. “What choice?” “Let us leave together.” Lucian looked around the chamber. “No army. No crown. No Book.” His crimson eyes settled on Luna. “No chasing the idea of Choice.” “You expect trust?” Cassian asked. Lucian looked at him. “Never.” Selene’s expression sharpened. “Then why should we agree?” “Because if you don’t, the Hollow King stays under Blackwood.” The shadow turned toward Lucian. You said we wouldn’t threaten them. “We’re not,” Lucian said calmly. “We’re just being honest.” The Hollow King considered that. Darius stepped closer. “You planned this.” “I plan everything.” “You let it into yourself because you knew we couldn’t destroy it without killing you.” Lucian didn’t look ashamed. “Yes.” Luna felt Darius’s anger rise. Not Command. Old hurt. “You’re using what I felt for you,” Darius said. Lucian’s expression shifted. Just slightly. “Yes.” The honesty hit harder than denial. Darius crossed the distance and hit him. Lucian fell beside the fire. The Hollow King surged up. Blackness filled the chamber. Lucian raised a hand. “Stop.” The darkness froze. Everyone stared. Lucian wiped blood from his mouth. “He had the right.” The Hollow King slowly settled. Darius stood over him, breathing hard. “You don’t get to call manipulation friendship.” “No,” Lucian said. “But I don’t know another way to ask you to let me go.” Darius’s anger wavered. Luna felt the boy underneath it. The one who once thanked Lucian for staying. Lucian pushed himself up. “I can’t become better here.” “Why?” Luna asked. “Because every room remembers what I did.” His eyes moved around the chamber. “Every person sees a monster before I even speak.” “You earned that,” Selene said. “I know.” Lucian faced her. “But it doesn’t help anything.” The Hollow King looked between them. Can a person change somewhere everyone remembers the worst thing they were? No one answered right away. Kael did. “Yes.” The shadow turned toward him. Kael touched the place where its fragment had entered him. “But no one has to make it easy.” The Hollow King absorbed that. Lucian looked at Darius. “I’m asking to leave.” Darius’s voice was rough. “And if I say no?” “I stay.” “No attack?” “No.” “No control?” “No.” “No using the Hollow King through the estate?” Lucian looked at the shadow. The Hollow King answered. I will not enter where I am refused. Luna studied it. “Do you understand that promise?” she asked. No. Honesty again. But I want to. The reflected Book began writing. A PROMISE MADE WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING IS STILL A CHOICE. Then another line appeared. ITS MEANING IS LEARNED BY KEEPING IT. Darius closed his eyes. Luna stayed quiet. This choice belonged to him too. Lucian had hurt all of them. But Blackwood was Darius’s home. His boundary. His open door. When Darius opened his eyes, grief was clear in them. “You may leave,” he said. Lucian stopped breathing. Darius continued. “You don’t come back without being invited.” “I understand,” Lucian said. “You don’t contact anyone here unless they contact you first.” Lucian nodded. “You don’t use anyone’s name, body, memory, fear, or bond without clear permission.” The Hollow King listened closely. Lucian looked at the shadow. “We agree.” Darius’s voice sharpened. “I asked both of you.” The Hollow King stepped forward. Its faceless head lowered. I agree. Blackwood Manor trembled. Not rejecting them. Recognizing the boundary. A doorway appeared in the chamber wall. Beyond it waited a snow-covered forest. Lucian stared at Darius. “You opened the door.” “Yes.” “You might regret it.” “I already do,” Darius said. A sad smile touched Lucian’s mouth. Then Darius added, “That doesn’t make it wrong.” Lucian looked at Luna. “Take care of him,” he said. She shook her head. “He takes care of himself.” Lucian’s smile turned real. “Better.” He stepped toward the doorway. The Hollow King followed, then stopped. It looked back at Luna. What should I call myself? She studied it. Not a king. Not hollow anymore. Still dangerous. Still unfinished. “That’s up to you,” Luna said. The creature turned toward Lucian. Lucian held out his hand. The shadow stared at it. Then placed its dark hand in his. Together, they crossed the threshold. The doorway began to close. Darius watched Lucian disappear into the snow. At the last second, Lucian looked back. “Goodbye, Darius,” he said. Darius’s throat tightened. “Goodbye.” The wall sealed. Silence filled the chamber. Luna moved beside him. He didn’t look at her. “Did I mess up?” he asked. “Maybe,” she said. A broken laugh left him. “That’s your comfort?” “No.” She took his hand. “The comfort is that it was your call.” Darius finally looked at her. Pain, relief, anger, and love moved through the bond. “I hated letting him go,” he said. “I know.” “I wanted him to stay.” “I know.” “I wanted to kill him.” “I know.” Luna rose and kissed him gently. When she pulled back, his forehead rested against hers. “What happens tomorrow?” he asked. “We choose again,” she said. Far beyond Blackwood, Lucian walked through the snow beside the shadow. After a long silence, the creature spoke. I chose a name. Lucian glanced at it. “What is it?” The shadow looked up at the open sky. “Eren,” it said. Lucian smiled. “Why?” Eren considered it. “Because no one gave it to me.” And behind them, Blackwood’s door stayed closed. Not forever. Just for now.
