The Life She Left Behind

1770 Words
The silver doors stood open. Beyond them, darkness waited. Luna stayed at the top of the ancient staircase, fingers locked around Darius’s hand as Solara’s final words drifted through the grove. Then I’m finally out of time. No one moved. Even the guards looked too afraid to step forward. Darius shifted closer. “We’re not going in yet,” he said. Luna turned. “She called my name.” “I heard her.” “And you think I’m just going to walk away?” “We don’t know what opened those doors.” “We know Solara left something for me.” “We know a voice that sounds like her is calling you into an ancient prison.” Darius’s expression hardened. “Those are not the same thing.” Luna looked down the staircase. The golden light stayed steady. Nothing moved beyond the doors. And still, something waited. “She knew my name,” Luna said. “So did the letter.” “Exactly.” “That doesn’t make it safe.” “It should.” Darius stared at her. “Solara prepared for you—not herself.” “That might mean she expected you.” “It does.” “It might also mean she made you for a purpose.” The word landed hard. Luna let go of his hand. “Made me,” she repeated. “Luna—” “Is that what you think I am?” “No.” “You just said it.” “I said it was a possibility.” She stepped back. Darius caught her wrist. “Don’t twist my words.” “Then explain them.” He glanced at the doors. “Solara hid this place and left a letter with your name.” His grip loosened slightly. “She may have loved Kael. That doesn’t make this safe.” Luna understood. It still hurt. “What if she did make me?” Darius looked at her. “You’re not just anything.” He stepped closer. “You’re the woman who argued with me in a warehouse full of blood.” Mason muttered, “Best first impression ever.” Evelyn elbowed him. Darius didn’t look away. “You hate being told what to do, but you still help people.” “That sounds like an insult.” “It often is.” His thumb brushed her wrist. “You laugh when you’re scared. You care too much. You don’t ask for help.” Luna’s throat tightened. “Solara may have started your life,” he said quietly, “but she didn’t live it.” The bond warmed. “She didn’t survive your nights. She didn’t make your mistakes. She didn’t walk into my territory and change everything.” Luna glanced at her boots. “These shoes are fine.” “Those were criminal.” A laugh slipped out of her. “There you are,” Darius said softly. She took his hand again. “I’m still going in.” “I knew that wouldn’t work.” “It didn’t fail.” “It did.” “It reminded me who I am.” “And you’re still going into an ancient prison.” “My choice.” Darius sighed. Mason looked at Alden. “He knows arguing makes her worse, right?” “I think he can’t stop,” Alden said. Evelyn nodded. “Tragic loop.” Darius opened his eyes. “I can still hear you.” “Good,” Mason said. Luna squeezed his hand. “We go together.” “Not a step alone.” “That almost sounds romantic.” “It’s tactical.” They looked at Mason and Evelyn. “You stay at the entrance.” “I’m head of security,” Mason said. “Then secure our exit.” “And if something attacks?” “It will regret it.” Luna sighed. “You almost lost a fight five minutes ago.” “I didn’t lose.” “It opened a prison.” “That doesn’t mean it won.” Mason smirked. “I missed this Alpha.” “You’ve known him an hour,” Evelyn said. “And I already missed him.” Alden stepped forward. “I’m going with you.” “No.” “You can’t order me.” “I can have Mason carry you back.” Mason shrugged. “I could.” Alden frowned. Luna stepped in. “He’s coming. He might recognize this place.” Darius narrowed his eyes. “You’re collecting people.” “You’re coming too.” “That’s not agreement.” “It’s close enough.” Alden walked down the stairs. Darius watched him. “I get why you don’t like him,” Luna said. “I don’t like his timing.” “You don’t like anyone who agrees with me.” “I don’t like how often they do.” Heat moved through the bond. Luna remembered his kiss under the yew tree. She leaned in slightly. “Distracting me?” “No.” “You’re staring at my mouth.” “I can be concerned and distracted.” “At least you’re honest.” “Sometimes.” He kissed her knuckles. “Stay beside me.” “Always ordering.” “Always ignoring.” They went down together. The air changed beyond the doors. Warm cedar replaced cold wind. Golden lights flickered awake. A corridor stretched ahead, lined with statues of crowned rulers—human and not. All their faces were destroyed. Luna slowed. “Why erase them?” Alden answered. “To erase them from history.” “Who did it?” “The victors.” “So many.” “Kingdoms fell after Solara disappeared,” Alden said. Luna’s chest tightened. “And Solara built this?” “I thought so,” Alden said. “Now I’m not sure.” Darius moved closer. “What do you feel?” “Recognition… and grief.” “And?” “Relief.” A soft laugh echoed. Everyone froze. At the far end stood a woman in silver armor and a gold cloak. She looked exactly like Luna. Solara. Her golden eyes settled on Luna. “You still pick difficult men.” Darius’s claws extended. “And you still decide before understanding,” she said. “Stay away,” Darius warned. “Kael,” she said softly. “My name is Darius.” “Yes.” Luna stepped forward. Darius pulled her back. “Stay beside me.” Solara watched them. “We were never like this.” “Like what?” Luna asked. “Equal.” “Kael loved me,” Solara said. “But I ruled. Distance destroyed us.” “You’re not real.” “No. A memory.” “Whose power?” “Mine.” Golden symbols spread. “And hers.” Luna’s mark flared. “I won’t hurt her,” Solara said. “You sent her toward Lucian’s weapon,” Darius snapped. “I sent her toward truth.” Alden stepped forward. “Why is this under Blackwood land?” “Kael’s bloodline guarded it.” Darius frowned. “I don’t have children.” “Kael did.” Silence dropped. Mason called from behind, “I heard that.” Darius turned. “Kael had children?” “One,” Solara said. “A son.” Luna stopped breathing. “With who?” Darius demanded. “With me.” Darius let go of Luna. “I was carrying him when Kael died.” “You never told me.” “I didn’t know.” Luna saw it—Kael, unaware, a hidden heartbeat. Darius whispered, “A son.” “Orion,” Solara said. The Hall trembled. Alden went pale. “Orion founded the Blackwood line,” he said. Silence. Darius stared. “That’s impossible.” “It explains everything,” Alden said. Luna pulled her hand away. Darius didn’t stop her. “No,” he said. “Darius—” “No.” He stepped closer. “Don’t go there.” “Our past had a child.” “Yes.” “And I’m Solara reborn.” “Luna.” “Does that mean—” “No.” The Hall shook. “You are not my ancestor,” he said. “And you are not mine,” she replied. Solara spoke softly. “Souls aren’t bloodlines.” Luna exhaled. “That got weird fast,” Mason said. Darius held Luna’s face. “Do you understand?” She nodded. “Say it.” “You’re not my descendant.” “And you’re not mine.” Warmth returned. “I’m not going anywhere,” Luna said. “Good.” Solara watched them. “Choice,” she whispered. “I wanted that for you,” she said. “I couldn’t know who you’d become.” “You planned my life.” “No.” “You set this up.” “I made sure truth survived.” Her gaze softened. “I only hoped you’d meet again and choose better.” “And if I chose someone else?” “I’d be glad you were free.” Darius asked, “Why are you out of time?” “Lucian knows,” Solara said. The ground vibrated. “He needs the names to rebuild the crown.” “What happens if he does?” Luna asked. “He’ll rewrite everything—bonds, loyalty, love.” “He can control them.” “He can replace choice.” A crack split the Hall. “He’s at the lower gate,” Solara said. “How do we stop him?” “You can’t.” “Not here. Not yet.” Another statue shattered. Black smoke spilled out. “You must take the Book of Names.” “Where?” “At the heart.” “Then we go.” “No.” “Darius—” Luna started. “She goes alone,” Solara said. “No,” Darius snapped. “Kael said the same.” “I’m not Kael.” “That’s why you must trust her.” “Twelve minutes,” Solara said. “Then the gate opens.” “I go with her.” “You can’t cross the Heart Chamber.” “Why?” “Sealed against kings.” “And if she doesn’t return?” Solara looked at Luna. “Lucian takes her name.” Darius pulled her close. “What does that mean?” “He erases Luna Vale,” Solara said. Her form began to fade. “And only the Queen remains.”
