The Second That Would Not End

1136 Words
The world stopped. Not metaphorically. Not almost. Actually. The pendulum clock in Blackwood's entrance hall froze halfway through its swing. Snowflakes hung motionless beyond the broken windows. The setting sun stayed locked against the mountains, painting the sky in an endless stretch of crimson and gold. No breeze. No birds. No heartbeat outside the manor walls. Only the people inside Blackwood could still move. Everyone felt it. Time itself had become a prison. Kael gasped. The seven-star mark across his chest pulsed with black light. "The Hollow King..." Kael whispered. "...he isn't stopping time." Isolde looked at him sharply. "No," Isolde said. Kael swallowed. "He's refusing tomorrow." Silence settled over the room. Luna slowly turned toward Isolde. "There's a difference," Luna said. "A terrifying one," Isolde replied. Darius never let go of Luna's hand. "If time isn't stopped..." Darius began. "It still exists," Isolde finished. "But no one can reach the next moment." Gabriel frowned. "So we're trapped inside a choice," Gabriel said. Isolde nodded once. "The last choice made before Time was severed." Luna looked around the room. Every conversation. Every heartbeat. Every relationship. Nothing could move forward. Nothing could heal. Nothing could become something new. The Hollow King had found the cruelest prison imaginable. A life where no one could choose again. The reflected Book floated into the air. Its pages turned slowly. A single sentence appeared. EVERY PRISON REPEATS. Then another. EVERY FREEDOM CHANGES. The ink lingered. Then one final line appeared beneath both. ONLY DEVOTION REMEMBERS TOMORROW. Darius read it twice. "What does that mean?" Darius asked. No one answered. Not even Isolde. Across the room... Cora slowly stood. She stared out the broken window at the frozen world. "It's beautiful," Cora said. No one disagreed. The snow looked untouched. The sky looked painted. The world looked peaceful. Cora's voice dropped. "And completely dead." She looked back at Luna. "I know this feeling," Cora said. "You do?" Luna asked. Cora nodded. "When I had Solara's memories..." She pressed a hand against her chest. "Every day felt exactly like the one before." Selene understood first. "You weren't living," Selene said. "I was repeating," Cora replied. The reflected Book quietly added another sentence. MEMORY WITHOUT CHANGE BECOMES A CAGE. Luna looked toward Darius. "So does love," Luna said. He looked back at her. "If it stops choosing," Darius said. She smiled sadly. "Exactly." Kael suddenly winced. The black fragment beneath his skin flared. "I can hear him," Kael said. "The Hollow King?" Luna asked. Kael nodded. "He's..." His expression shifted. "...confused." Darius frowned. "Why?" Darius asked. Kael closed his eyes. "He keeps asking why nothing changed," Kael said. Everyone stared. "He expected the bond to weaken." Kael looked at Luna and Darius. "But..." He let out a short, disbelieving laugh. "...you two keep choosing each other." Luna frowned. "How?" she asked. "There isn't another tomorrow," Kael said. "There doesn't have to be," Darius replied. Every eye turned toward Darius. He looked almost surprised by his own answer. Then he looked at Luna. "I don't only choose you once," Darius said. He squeezed her hand gently. "I choose you every time I look at you." Warmth spread through their bond. Not because time moved. But because intention did. Luna smiled. "I was just about to say the same thing," Luna said. Kael inhaled sharply. "The fragment..." Kael grabbed his chest. "It doesn't understand." Far beneath Blackwood... The Hollow King watched through Kael's eyes. It had believed choice required time. Decision. Sequence. Beginning. End. But Luna and Darius kept making the same choice inside the same frozen second. Again. And again. And again. Not because time forced repetition. But because love stayed active even without tomorrow. For the first time in its endless existence... The Hollow King encountered something it could not imitate. Isolde slowly approached Luna. "I think..." Isolde hesitated. "...you're proving something." "What?" Luna asked. "The seven forms of Choice," Isolde said. Luna frowned. "I've only heard their names." "You've lived them," Isolde replied. She counted quietly. "Consent." Luna looked at Darius. His hand still rested gently against hers. Never demanding. Always asking. "Truth." Darius admitting he could kill. Admitting he didn't know. Choosing honesty over comfort. "Mercy." Luna giving Cora a name instead of another prison. "Defiance." Selene refusing to become only a door. "Desire." Mason staying beside Evelyn because he wanted to. Not because fate demanded it. "Release." Gabriel finally letting Ethan decide whether forgiveness was possible. Only one remained. Isolde looked directly at Luna. "Devotion." Luna glanced toward Darius. He was already looking at her. Neither spoke. Neither needed to. The bond quietly answered for them. The Hollow King's voice echoed through Blackwood. LOVE IS STAGNATION. Luna looked toward the ceiling. "No," Luna said. YOU REMAIN THE SAME. "No," she said again. She smiled softly. "I've changed every time I've chosen him." Darius laughed quietly. "So have I," Darius said. The voice grew colder. YOU HAVE NOT MOVED. "No," Darius agreed. "We've grown." The manor trembled. The frozen sunlight flickered. Only once. But everyone saw it. Time had noticed. Kael gasped. "It cracked," Kael said. "What did?" Ronan asked. "The prison," Kael replied. The reflected Book blazed with golden light. New words appeared across every page. CHOICE DOES NOT REQUIRE TOMORROW. Then— IT REQUIRES WILL. Outside... One snowflake fell. Just one. It drifted gently toward the ground. The Hollow King screamed. The sound rolled beneath the earth like an earthquake. Every member of House Aurelis looked toward the floor. Isolde smiled for the first time. Not polite. Not careful. But hopeful. "It failed," Isolde said. Darius didn't relax. "No," Darius said. He looked toward the seven glowing tunnels beneath the estate. "It learned." Everyone followed his gaze. The seven lines of light had changed. They were no longer pointing downward. They had turned. All seven now aimed toward Luna. The reflected Book wrote one final warning. THE SEVEN FORMS OF CHOICE HAVE RECOGNIZED THEIR HEIR. Luna felt seven different emotions strike her at once. Mercy. Truth. Defiance. Desire. Consent. Release. Devotion. Her golden mark ignited. Seven circles of light spread beneath her feet. The members of House Aurelis all dropped to one knee. Even Isolde. Not because they were ordered. But because their blood remembered. Luna stared at them in alarm. "Please stand," Luna said. None of them moved. Isolde lowered her head. "We can't," Isolde said. "Why not?" Luna asked. "Because..." Isolde's voice trembled with something between awe and fear. "...the First Queen has awakened." Before Luna could answer— A woman's voice echoed from somewhere impossibly distant. Not the Hollow King. Not Solara. Older. Gentler. And infinitely more powerful. "My child..." Golden light filled the manor. "...you've finally come far enough to say no." The seven circles beneath Luna expanded. One by one... they began opening like doors.
