The Book That Chose Her

1001 Words
With a deep, booming sound that felt like distant thunder, the massive bronze doors of the Archives slammed shut behind them. Luna jumped, a little startled. The vibration hung in the air for a good few seconds before an almost heavy silence fell over the enormous space. She turned slowly, taking it all in. The Archives were nothing like she’d ever pictured. Shelves upon shelves stretched endlessly into the darkness, disappearing way beyond what she could see. Ancient ladders climbed up to impossible heights, and thin stone bridges connected upper levels suspended way above. Thousands of candles, just floating there with nothing holding them, filled the immense chamber with a soft, golden light. Dust motes drifted lazily in the air. Even though the place was clearly ancient, it didn't feel neglected; instead, it felt… alive. "It's beautiful," Luna whispered, her voice naturally softer than she intended. Keeper Alden smiled. "It remembers being called that." Luna looked at him, a bit confused. "What do you mean?" Alden put a wrinkled hand on a nearby bookshelf. "The Archives are older than any kingdom that exists today." His fingers brushed the ancient wood like he was fond of it. "They've seen every Alpha crowned, every war fought, every bloodline born, and every secret buried that was never meant to be found again." Luna frowned. "You're talking about this place like it's a person." Alden met her eyes. "It is." Before Luna could ask another question, one of the floating candles drifted towards her. She instinctively stepped back. "Darius..." "It won't hurt you," Darius said calmly. The candle hovered just inches from Luna's face before drifting further into the library. Another followed, then another. In no time, dozens of candles were surrounding her, zipping through the air like a swarm of glowing fireflies. Mason stared, his eyes wide. "I've definitely never seen anything like that before." Evelyn crossed her arms. "I told you she was different." "No," Alden corrected gently. "She isn't different." Everyone looked at him. He smiled sadly. "She's remembered." A strange shiver ran down Luna's spine. "I don't get it." "You will." Alden gestured for them to follow. The group walked between endless shelves packed with leather-bound books, fragile scrolls, and strange crystal tablets covered in glowing symbols. Luna reached out to touch one of the books. Before her fingers even made contact, the leather cover sprang open on its own. Its yellowed pages started flipping rapidly, as if an invisible hand was turning them. She gasped. "I didn't—" "I know," Darius said quietly. Suddenly, every book on the shelf opened. Pages fluttered like a thousand tiny wings. The sound spread outwards, shelf after shelf, book after book, until the whole Archives hummed with the rustle of turning pages. The floor trembled. Mason took a cautious step back. "Keeper..." Alden didn't answer. His eyes had widened in shock. "It can't be." "What?" Evelyn asked. "The Archives are searching." Luna looked around nervously. "Searching for what?" Alden whispered, his voice barely a breath, "For you." Without any warning, every page stopped turning, all at the same exact moment. A deep silence followed. Then— A loud c***k echoed from somewhere high above. Everyone looked up. A single ancient book slid from the highest shelf. Another followed. Then another. Dozens of books started to fall. Luna gasped. "They're going to crush us!" But they never hit the ground. Instead, the books floated in the air, circling slowly above her head. Golden light streamed from their pages. The symbols on Luna's wrist started to burn hotter. She let out a small cry. Darius immediately moved to her side. "Luna." "It burns." He gently took her wrist. The second their skin touched, the intense pain stopped. Luna looked up at him, surprised. "It stopped." Darius looked equally surprised. "So did mine." His own wrist was glowing under his shirt cuff. Neither of them noticed Selene entering the Archives through a hidden side door. She froze, watching the books circling above Luna. For a long moment, she just observed. Then she whispered, "No..." Alden turned towards her. "You've seen this before." Selene nodded slowly. "Only once." "When?" Her voice grew quiet. "The night Sienna awakened." The books suddenly froze in midair. One drifted away from the others. Unlike the rest, this one wasn't leather-bound. Its cover was pure white, with no title or markings. In its center, a single golden handprint was pressed. It floated gently towards Luna. Luna instinctively stepped back. "I don't think it likes me." Keeper Alden smiled. "It likes you very much." The white book stopped directly in front of her. No one spoke. Even Mason held his breath. Alden looked at Luna. "Place your hand on the cover." Luna hesitated. "What if something goes wrong?" Darius stepped beside her again. "If it does..." He met her eyes. "You won't face it alone." Luna took a slow breath. Then, with everyone watching, she lifted her trembling hand. The moment her palm touched the golden imprint— The entire Archives erupted in brilliant light. Every candle flared. Every bookshelf shook. A voice echoed through the chamber. Not loud, not threatening, but ancient. It spoke only four words: "The Guardian has returned." The white book burst open. On the first page was a portrait of Luna. Except it wasn't quite Luna. The woman in the portrait looked older, stronger. She wore silver armor under a golden cloak, and a crown rested on her head. Standing behind her was Darius. But he wasn't dressed like the Alpha she knew. He wore black battle armor, stained with blood. One hand rested protectively on the Queen’s shoulder, while the other gripped a sword engulfed in golden flames. Luna stared at the impossible image. Then she whispered the only words she could manage, "How is this possible?" No one answered. Because no one in the Archives knew. But somewhere far beneath the mountains, the man with crimson eyes smiled. Everything was unfolding exactly as he had foreseen.
