LOVE WITHOUT FREEDOM HAS ENTERED THE WORLD.
The words burned across the reflected Book.
Outside the bond...
Kael’s eyes went completely black.
The silver wards around him shattered.
Ronan moved first.
“Kael!”
Kael blurred forward with impossible speed.
He caught Ronan’s wrist before anyone else could react.
Not rough.
Almost careful.
“You’re scared.”
The voice wasn’t fully Kael’s.
It carried too many echoes.
Too many people speaking through one sound.
Darius tried to step toward him.
He couldn’t.
Inside the bond, invisible chains tightened around his chest.
The Hollow King smiled with Darius’s face.
“You’re still here.”
Luna looked around the endless darkness.
“No.”
She squeezed Darius’s hand.
“We’re here.”
The creature tilted its head.
“The difference?”
“It matters.”
“It doesn’t.”
“It always does.”
The Hollow King gave a soft laugh.
“You think names matter.”
“Yes.”
“You think choice matters.”
“Yes.”
“You think love survives freedom.”
“Yes.”
It sounded almost curious.
“Prove it.”
Outside...
Kael let go of Ronan.
He turned to Gabriel.
Then Ethan.
Then Selene.
Everyone he looked at froze.
Not because he was commanding them.
Because he knew exactly what scared them most.
Gabriel saw Luna disappearing forever.
Ethan saw his father dying again.
Selene saw herself becoming nothing but a doorway once more.
The Hollow King didn’t attack.
It just showed them the futures they feared most.
Cassian realized it first.
“Don’t look into his eyes!”
Too late.
Mason met Kael’s gaze.
Instantly—
He stumbled back.
Evelyn caught him.
“Mason?”
His breathing went uneven.
“She leaves.”
Evelyn frowned.
“What?”
“She picks someone better.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“I lose her.”
Evelyn grabbed his face.
“Look at me.”
“She deserves more.”
“You don’t get to decide what I deserve.”
“She’ll leave.”
“No.”
“She should.”
Evelyn kissed him hard enough to shut him up.
When she pulled back, Mason looked completely stunned.
She rested her forehead against his.
“I don’t love perfect men.”
His voice cracked.
“You don’t?”
“No.”
“I was kind of hoping you did.”
She laughed through tears.
“Yeah, no.”
The darkness around Mason broke.
Kael flinched.
The Hollow King had lost another doorway.
Inside the bond...
The creature watched closely.
“She denied fear.”
Luna nodded.
“Yes.”
“She should have promised forever.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because forever isn’t hers to promise.”
The Hollow King frowned.
“Then why does she believe him?”
“She doesn’t believe he’ll never change.”
The creature looked confused.
“She believes he’ll keep choosing.”
It turned toward Darius.
“And if he stops?”
Darius answered quietly.
“Then she walks away.”
The Hollow King stared.
“You accept loss.”
“No.”
Darius stayed steady.
“I accept reality.”
The darkness rippled hard.
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
“You’re afraid.”
“Yes.”
The answer even surprised Luna.
Darius didn’t hide it.
“I am.”
The Hollow King stepped closer.
“Then cage her.”
“No.”
“Command her.”
“No.”
“Close the gates.”
“No.”
Each refusal weakened the darkness.
Luna understood why.
The Hollow King had only ever known two options.
Control.
Or abandonment.
It had never considered a third.
Staying together...
freely.
Outside...
Kael grabbed his head.
“Stop!”
Black veins spread up his neck.
“I don’t want to see this!”
Selene stepped closer.
“You’re fighting it.”
“No.”
“You are.”
Kael dropped to his knees.
“I can feel both of them.”
His breathing turned ragged.
“The Hollow King…”
He looked at Selene.
“…doesn’t understand why they don’t own each other.”
Selene whispered,
“Neither did the Vale elders.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“Neither did I.”
Silence followed.
Gabriel closed his eyes.
“I spent years thinking protecting people meant deciding everything for them.”
His gaze found Ethan.
“I even thought disappearing was love.”
Ethan looked away.
“You were wrong.”
“I know.”
“I needed my father.”
Gabriel’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“And you decided I didn’t get one.”
Gabriel lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Ethan’s voice shook.
“You never asked.”
“No.”
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Ethan stepped forward.
“You don’t get forgiveness just because you admitted it.”
“I know.”
“You earn it.”
Gabriel nodded.
“One day at a time.”
Ethan studied him for a few seconds.
Finally...
“One day.”
He held out his hand.
Gabriel stared at it.
Then took it.
The reflected Book turned another page.
LOVE ASKS.
The black veins on Kael’s throat faded slightly.
Inside...
The Hollow King saw it happen.
“Another door closed.”
“Yes,” Luna said.
“It should have opened.”
“Why?”
“Pain creates entry.”
Darius looked at it directly.
“Only if people face it alone.”
The creature went still.
“Alone.”
“Yes.”
“You keep stopping that.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Luna smiled softly.
“Because that’s what family is.”
The word echoed strangely through the darkness.
Family.
The Hollow King repeated it like something unfamiliar.
“What is family?”
Luna thought for a moment.
“People who keep choosing each other… even after they know the truth.”
The creature’s stolen face shifted.
Not angry.
Sad.
“So I can never have one.”
The words hit Luna harder than any attack.
For a dangerous heartbeat...
she felt sorry for it.
The Hollow King noticed.
Darkness surged toward her.
Darius pulled her behind him.
“No.”
“It hurts,” Luna whispered.
“I know.”
“He’s alone.”
“I know.”
“He never learned.”
“I know.”
Darius held her face gently.
“But don’t confuse understanding with surrender.”
She met his eyes.
The fear there wasn’t for himself.
It was for her heart.
Because compassion had always been Luna’s strength.
And its easiest weakness.
She nodded slowly.
“I know.”
The Hollow King watched them.
“You protect her from me.”
“Yes.”
“You protect her from herself.”
Darius answered without hesitation.
“When she forgets to.”
Luna rolled her eyes.
“I heard that.”
“You were supposed to.”
She smiled anyway.
The Hollow King looked between them.
Then asked quietly,
“Who protects you?”
Darius didn’t answer right away.
Finally...
“She does.”
Luna squeezed his hand.
“Always.”
The darkness trembled.
Not with rage.
With something worse.
Longing.
Outside...
Kael suddenly screamed.
“No!”
Everyone turned.
Black light exploded from his body.
The fragment tore out of his chest again.
This time...
it didn’t become a child.
It became a doorway.
A floating black doorway in the middle of the medical wing.
Cold air spilled out from it.
Selene went pale.
“No…”
Cassian raised his sword.
“What is it?”
Selene couldn’t look away.
“The Hollow King isn’t trying to get in anymore.”
Gabriel felt his stomach drop.
“Then what is it doing?”
Selene whispered,
“It’s inviting something out.”
The reflected Book began writing faster than ever.
Ink spread across every page.
One line finally held steady.
THE FIRST PRISONER HAS ACCEPTED THE INVITATION.
From the darkness beyond the doorway...
a woman laughed.
Soft.
Beautiful.
Familiar.
Luna heard it first.
Her heart stopped.
“No…”
Darius turned to her.
“What is it?”
Luna stared at the doorway.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I know that voice.”
The laughter came again.
Then the woman spoke.
“My little moon…”
Gabriel went completely still.
Amara, standing in the medical wing doorway, dropped the tray she was holding.
It shattered across the floor.
She whispered one name.
“Solara…”
The woman everyone believed had died twenty years ago...
answered from the darkness.
“My family…”
The doorway widened.
“…I’ve finally found my way home.”
