The woman’s voice drifted through the black doorway.
“My family…” she said softly.
“…I finally made it home.”
Amara froze in place, standing among the shattered pieces of the tray.
Gabriel stepped in front of her, weak but still trying to protect her on instinct.
“That’s not Solara,” Gabriel said.
Amara’s face went completely pale.
“I know that voice,” Amara whispered.
“So does Luna,” Gabriel said. “Doesn’t make it real.”
Inside the bond, Luna could feel the Hollow King watching her reaction.
Waiting for grief to turn into an opening.
Darius wrapped his fingers around hers.
“Don’t answer it,” Darius said quietly.
“I wasn’t going to,” Luna replied.
“You wanted to,” he said.
“Yes,” Luna admitted.
He looked at her closely.
Luna met his gaze without flinching.
“I heard someone call me the name my father used when I was a kid,” Luna said. “Of course I wanted to answer.”
The darkness around them shifted.
The Hollow King had expected denial.
Instead, Luna gave it honesty.
Darius lifted her hand and pressed a kiss to her knuckles.
“You can want something without giving it permission,” Darius said.
“Exactly,” Luna said.
The creature wearing both their faces frowned.
Outside the bond, a pale hand appeared in the doorway.
Golden light curled around slender fingers.
Then a woman stepped through.
Dark hair fell to her waist. A white gown moved around her like she was underwater. Her face had Luna’s features, but older. Sharper.
Golden eyes locked onto Amara.
“Daughter,” the woman said.
Amara stumbled back.
Gabriel caught her.
“No,” Amara said, shaking her head.
The woman smiled sadly.
“You remember me,” she said.
“I remember Solara from the stories my mother told me,” Amara said.
“Stories?” the woman echoed.
Pain flickered across the stranger’s face.
“I held you when you were born,” the woman said.
Amara’s eyes filled.
“My mother held me,” Amara whispered.
“I wore her body,” the woman said.
Silence dropped over the room.
Selene’s scar burned black.
“That’s not Solara,” Selene said firmly.
The woman’s golden gaze shifted to her.
“The door that learned her name,” the woman said.
Selene stepped closer to Luna’s unconscious body, still locked beside Darius inside the bond.
“My name is Selene,” Selene said.
“Yes,” the stranger replied with a faint smile.
“And mine is Solara,” the woman said.
Lyra walked into the medical wing.
The second she saw the woman, she stopped breathing.
“No,” Lyra said.
The stranger looked at her.
“Memory,” the woman said.
Lyra’s golden eyes filled with anger.
“You’re not her,” Lyra said.
“Neither are you,” the woman replied.
“I carry what she remembered,” Lyra said.
“And Luna carries what she became,” the woman answered.
The woman placed a hand over her chest.
“I carry what was left,” she said.
The reflected Book lifted off the table.
Its pages flipped wildly.
SOLARA AURELIS
The name appeared.
Then black ink slashed through it.
BODY: PRESERVED
SOUL: ABSENT
OCCUPANT: UNKNOWN
The woman’s smile vanished.
Cassian raised his silver sword.
“You’re the first prisoner,” Cassian said.
She glanced at the Book.
“I was the first one abandoned,” she said.
The Hollow King’s doorway widened behind her.
Shadows spilled into the medical wing, crawling over walls and beds.
Kael stayed on his knees near the broken wards, gasping as black light poured from his chest.
Ronan moved toward him.
“Kael,” Ronan said urgently.
“Don’t,” Kael warned.
“That’s not happening,” Ronan said firmly.
Kael lifted his dark eyes.
“I can’t control what it shows you,” Kael said.
“You’re still my brother,” Ronan said.
“You barely know me,” Kael replied.
Ronan crouched in front of him.
“Then I’ll start now,” Ronan said.
Kael’s expression cracked.
The shadows around him weakened.
The woman watched them.
“Love everywhere,” she said with quiet disgust.
“And none of it belongs to me,” she added.
Inside the bond, the Hollow King smiled.
“You see?” it asked Luna. “She understands.”
“No,” Luna said. “She’s hurting.”
“Pain is understanding,” it insisted.
“No,” Luna said firmly. “Pain is just pain.”
Darius looked toward the false Blackwood around them.
Every private memory was exposed.
Their first kiss.
Their arguments.
The nights Luna fell asleep against him.
The moments he wanted to control her and chose not to.
The Hollow King had turned their love into something it could manipulate.
Darius let go of Luna’s hand.
Her heart dropped.
Then he stepped away.
The Hollow King smiled.
“Fear becomes distance,” it said.
“No,” Darius said.
He walked toward a memory of Luna on the balcony.
“This isn’t ours anymore,” Darius said.
Luna understood.
The creature could use anything they tried to protect inside the bond.
So Darius wasn’t leaving her.
He was letting the memories go.
One by one, he touched them.
The balcony disappeared.
The first kiss faded.
The training field vanished.
The Hollow King’s smile faltered.
“What are you doing?” it demanded.
Darius looked at Luna.
“Making space for new ones,” he said.
Emotion tightened her throat.
The creature struck him.
A black force threw Darius across the false estate.
Luna ran to him.
The Hollow King blocked her.
“If he destroys the memories, what’s left?” it asked.
Luna looked past it.
Darius pushed himself up.
Blood marked his mouth even inside the bond.
“We are,” Luna said.
The creature reached for her.
Luna stepped back.
“No,” she said.
“You feel sorry for me,” it accused.
“Yes,” Luna admitted.
“You understand me,” it pressed.
“Some of it,” Luna said.
“Then stay,” it demanded.
“No,” Luna said.
The word hit harder than any power.
The Hollow King recoiled.
Luna continued.
“Compassion isn’t consent,” she said.
Outside, the preserved woman moved toward Luna’s motionless body.
Darius’s real arms still held her, both of them trapped with closed eyes.
The woman touched Luna’s hair.
“She looks like me,” the woman said.
Lyra stepped between them.
“She looks like herself,” Lyra said.
The stranger’s eyes narrowed.
“You carry my memories but defend my replacement,” she said.
“She isn’t your replacement,” Lyra replied.
“Then what is she?” the woman demanded.
“Free,” Lyra said.
That answer set her off.
Golden power exploded outward.
Lyra slammed into the wall.
Cassian attacked.
His silver sword passed through the woman’s chest without drawing blood.
She grabbed his throat.
“You helped them erase me,” she said.
Cassian’s jaw tightened.
“I didn’t know your body was still here,” Cassian said.
“You always say that,” she hissed.
She threw him across the room.
Selene raised both hands.
The black scar over her heart split slightly—not a door, just a thin line.
The shadows around the woman pulled toward it.
Selene gasped but stayed standing.
“You don’t get to use my body again,” Selene said.
The preserved woman looked at her with something close to respect.
“No,” she said.
She turned back to Luna.
“I want hers,” she said.
Gabriel lunged.
Too weak, too slow.
The woman knocked him back with one hand.
He hit the floor beside the bed.
“Dad!” Ethan shouted.
Ethan shifted and attacked.
Golden light caught him midair.
His wolf form hung suspended.
Amara stepped forward.
“Put my son down,” Amara demanded.
The woman looked at her.
“You talk to me like I’m the enemy,” she said.
“You’re hurting my family,” Amara said.
“I am your family,” the woman insisted.
“No,” Amara said, her voice shaking but firm.
“My family isn’t blood or power,” she said.
She looked at Gabriel.
Ethan.
Selene.
Luna and Darius.
“It’s how we treat each other,” Amara said.
The golden hold on Ethan vanished.
He dropped, shifted back, and landed on one knee.
The woman stared at Amara.
“You reject me?” she asked.
“I don’t know you,” Amara said.
“I made your bloodline,” the woman said.
“And I made my children,” Amara replied.
The woman’s face twisted.
The Hollow King’s shadows wrapped around her shoulders.
It hadn’t just come through her.
It was inside her too.
Not controlling her.
Feeding on her pain.
Inside the bond, Luna felt it.
“The first prisoner is her body,” Luna said.
Darius stepped beside her.
“And the Hollow King promised to make her whole,” Darius said.
“Yes,” Luna confirmed.
The creature appeared again.
“I kept my promise,” it said.
“No,” Luna said. “You gave an empty body enough memories to think it was abandoned.”
The Hollow King’s expression sharpened.
“She has Solara’s blood,” it insisted.
“Not her soul,” Luna said.
“She remembers love,” it argued.
“She remembers losing it,” Luna corrected.
The difference filled the darkness.
Darius reached for Luna’s hand again.
He stopped just before touching her.
“May I?” Darius asked.
Even now.
Even here.
Luna smiled through tears.
“Yes,” she said.
Their fingers met.
The bond loosened slightly.
Not because the Hollow King allowed it.
Because permission had been restored where it tried to control them.
A crack of golden light split the darkness.
The creature screamed.
Outside, Luna’s eyes opened.
Darius woke at the same time.
They both inhaled together.
The preserved woman stood over them.
Her eyes widened.
“You escaped,” she said.
Luna slowly sat up.
“No,” Luna said.
Darius stood beside her.
“We chose each other again,” Darius said.
The Hollow King’s doorway shook.
The woman looked between them, rage and longing tearing across Solara’s stolen face.
“You have everything I lost,” she said.
Luna stepped closer.
“No,” Luna said.
The woman raised her hand.
Darius tensed but stayed with Luna.
Luna continued.
“I have everything that’s mine,” she said.
The woman’s fingers trembled.
“Then what do I have?” she asked quietly.
The question was so quiet the whole room seemed to lean in.
Luna looked at her.
At the empty body.
The stolen memories.
The ancient loneliness wearing a queen’s face.
“A choice,” Luna said.
The Hollow King roared through the doorway.
Black chains burst out and wrapped around the woman.
She screamed as they dragged her back.
“No!” she cried.
Luna grabbed her hand.
Golden power clashed between them.
The woman stared at Luna.
“Why are you helping me?” she asked.
“Because he doesn’t get to choose for you either,” Luna said.
Darius held Luna at the waist as the doorway pulled harder.
Together, they held on.
The woman looked at the Hollow King.
Then back at Luna.
For the first time, her golden eyes wavered.
Human.
“What’s my name?” she whispered.
The Book opened.
The pages were blank.
The doorway widened.
Luna held on tighter.
“I don’t know,” Luna admitted.
The woman started slipping away.
“But you get to pick one,” Luna said softly.
The stranger stared at her.
Then smiled.
Small.
Scared.
Real.
“My name is Cora,” she said.
The Book flared.
CORA
The black chains shattered.
The doorway slammed shut.
Silence crashed over the medical wing.
Cora collapsed into Luna’s arms.
But inside Darius and Luna’s bond, the Hollow King was still there.
And for the first time, it was furious.
Because someone it thought it owned had chosen herself.
