Spring Thaw

1918 Words

Spring Thaw Spring Samuel breathed in the warm spring air. Although it seemed early this year, he could feel life budding all around him. It was only March, but the spirit of the earth was waking. He’d learned much from his mentor, an elder he'd only known as Blackfeather, and was on his way to visit and to learn more from the old man. The village was not far, but Blackfeather preferred to live alone in a small house just off the land the Crown had chosen to resettle their people a generation earlier. Samuel sighed, the crunch of snow as it gave way beneath his feet a counterpoint to his thoughts. He didn't blame Blackfeather. More and more, he chafed against the white man’s arbitrary rules and regulations himself. He must attend school. He must speak English at all times while there.
