Chapter One I pretended everything was normal, even though my heart was breaking. I did not know what tomorrow would hold; how could I? I crept into her room, giving my beloved Rosalind a good night kiss, then softly tucked the comforter around her. Watching her slumber so peacefully was another twist of the knife in my heart. She had no idea that when she awoke on the morrow she would not see her mother for an undetermined amount of time. I wished I could stay, but that option was not available to me now. I took a shaky breath, then turned away. With hardly a sound from the door behind me, I slipped quietly down the hall, feeling like an intruder in my own house.
