Chapter One
Evelyn walked to the small library she'd grown to love. It was two blocks from her house and on the way home from school. She almost always walked home from school now, as her mom worked long hours as a nurse at the only hospital in town. Evelyn was used to taking care of herself— after all, it wasn't like she was a baby or anything. She was almost ten now.
Her and her mother had moved to town that summer, right before the start of the school year. For Evelyn, that meant she was already having a better year than she'd had previously. For a while, she’d felt like they’d moved every few months.
