Chapter Four Evelyn sat up in bed gasping. She looked at the clock beside the bed. Only midnight. Her heart was racing as fast as if she’d just run a hundred-yard dash, and without warning, she burst into tears, deep wracking sobs that pulled at her chest and her throat. Before she had time to process why she was crying, her door flew open. Like a protecting angel, her mom appeared and sat down on the bed. Evelyn allowed her to gather her into her arms in a way she didn't much now that Evelyn was getting older.
