CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

WEDNESDAY NIGHT - LUCA’S ROOM

10:43pm.

Luca was mid pushup when his phone vibrated on the floor.

Ethan

Luca sat up so fast his back cracked.

Picked up. "Yeah?"

"Luca." Ethan’s voice. Tired. "You texted 'Ro might be okay' and then nothing."

Luca scrubbed a hand over his face. "She went on a date, bro. With a guy from Lone Star. Caleb. He’s human."

Silence.

"Is she okay?" Ethan asked. Quiet.

"Yeah." Luca’s voice cracked. "He is making her blush Ethan. Calling her every night. Today he even jumped in front of a boat to save some kid."

Ethan exhaled.

"And you?"

"I hate it," Luca said. Honest. "But I don’t hate him."

"Milla knows you called me?"

"No."

"Don’t tell her. Things are tight at the moment. Someone has been pulling tricks on Reed territory. Let her have Texas." Ethan paused. "I trust you to watch her."

Luca closed his eyes. "I got her, you be careful and do what you have to do ."

"I know you do."

They hung up.

SAME TIME - AURORA’S ROOM

Aurora was texting Elena about the boat thing and updating her on Caleb too.

Elena : "So do you think you like this Caleb boy?"

Me : "I enjoy his company and to be honest, I don't know..."

Elena : "Does this mean you have forgotten about a certain man with green eyes who is ghosting you?" she asks, half laughing.

I throw my head back on the bed and Ethan's face flashes on my mind.

Me : "Don't even start, maybe Caleb is what I need to forget about him."

She sighs.

Elena : "Ohh my Rory, you know that never ends well. If you're going to like Caleb do it because you just like him. Not to bury feelings for your brother's best friend."

Me :" Yes, I know. Enough about me, how are you and Jakey doing. "

Elena : "He is sweet as always, and do not deflect Aurora."

Me : "Go to sleep Miller, and greet Caroline for me. Love you"

I hung up.

She is right, but why is everything so complicated.

Ethan, where are you?

Aurora fell asleep minutes later while trying to debug her own feelings.
