Chapter 8: Living Both Lives

753 Words
Kael's wolf form stood tall, his ears perked up, and his nose twitching as he surveyed his surroundings. He felt a sense of freedom and power, but also uncertainty and fear. He had never felt so alive, yet so lost. As he padded through the forest, he stumbled upon a clearing. In the center of the clearing stood an old, gnarled tree, its branches reaching towards the moon like skeletal fingers. Kael felt drawn to the tree, as if it held secrets and answers he desperately needed. He approached the tree cautiously, his tail held low. As he reached the base of the tree, he noticed a strange symbol etched into the trunk. It glowed with a faint, otherworldly light, and Kael felt a shiver run down his spine. That symbol was oddly familiar..... "Aha! This was the symbol I saw at my place the night everything started" Kael thought "I hope this isn't another trance or nightmare" Suddenly, he heard a low, whispery voice in his mind. "Welcome, Kael. I have been waiting for you." Kael's ears perked up, and he growled softly. "Who are you?" he thought back. "I am the guardian of this forest," the voice replied. "And you, Kael, are a creature of great power and potential. But you are also a danger to yourself and others. You must learn to control your wolf, or risk losing yourself forever." Kael's mind reeled with questions, but the voice fell silent. He was left standing alone in the clearing, the symbol on the tree still glowing with an otherworldly light. He knew that his journey was far from over, and that the road ahead would be fraught with challenges and dangers. But he was ready to face them head-on, to embrace his true nature and find his place in this strange, new world. --------------------------- Kael returned to the city, his mind still reeling from the events in the forest. He knew he had to keep his secret hidden, but it was getting harder to maintain the charade. He felt like he was living a double life, torn between his human and wolf selves. As he walked into the newsroom, his colleagues greeted him with nods and smiles. Kael forced a smile back, trying to blend in. But his senses were on high alert, picking up every sound and smell. He felt like a wild animal trapped in a cage. At his desk, he struggled to focus on his work. His mind kept wandering back to the forest, to the symbol on the tree and the voice in his head. He felt like he was losing his grip on reality. Just then, Emily, his girlfriend, walked in and sat down beside him. "Hey, Kael, how's it going?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with concern. Kael's heart skipped a beat. He couldn't let her get too close, couldn't risk her discovering his secret. "I'm good, Emily," he said, trying to sound casual. "Just a little stressed with work." Emily nodded sympathetically. "I know how that feels. But hey, I have an idea. Let's grab lunch together and take a break from all this." Kael's stomach growled at the mention of food, but he hesitated. What if he lost control in public? What if someone saw him transform? But Emily's smile was persuasive, and he found himself agreeing. As they walked to the cafeteria, Kael's senses were on high alert. He could smell the food, the people, the sweat and perfume. It was overwhelming. Just as they were about to sit down, Kael's phone buzzed. He excused himself to answer it, his heart racing. But as he turned away, his hand brushed against a hot cup of coffee, and he felt a sudden surge of pain. His eyes flashed yellow, and his nails extended into claws. He felt himself transforming, felt his body begin to shift. But then, just as suddenly, it stopped. Kael's heart was pounding, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He looked around, but no one had noticed anything out of the ordinary. Emily was still sitting at the table, oblivious to the danger that had just passed. Kael forced a smile, his mind racing with relief. He had almost lost control, almost revealed his secret to the world. But he had managed to pull back, to keep his wolf hidden. For now, he was safe. But he knew it was only a matter of time before his secret was discovered. And when that happened.... He decided to discard that thought
