Chapter 2: Cracks in the Moonlight

The applause echoed through the grand hall. Lina stood before hundreds of guests, forcing herself to smile despite the growing unease in her chest. Something was wrong. She could feel it. Like a shadow lurking just beyond her reach. The ceremony master raised his hands, silencing the crowd. “Tonight is a historic night for our kingdom.” More cheers followed. “The Moon Goddess has blessed our people with prosperity, strength, and peace. Tonight, we celebrate the woman chosen to stand beside our king as Luna.” Lina’s heart raced. This was it. The moment she had dreamed about for years. Across the hall, Draven remained standing beside the throne. His face was unreadable. His eyes were fixed on her. Yet there was no happiness in them. Only tension. Only pain. The sight made Lina’s stomach twist. Why? Why was he looking at her like that? The ceremony master smiled. “Before the official blessing begins, Alpha King Draven would like to address the kingdom.” The crowd immediately erupted. Draven stepped forward. Every eye followed him. Every conversation died. Silence fell over the hall. Even the musicians stopped playing. Lina watched him carefully. His powerful figure moved through the center aisle until he stood beneath the royal crest. For a moment, he said nothing. The silence stretched. One second. Two seconds. Three. The tension became almost unbearable. Then he spoke. “My people.” His deep voice filled every corner of the hall. The crowd listened attentively. For some reason, Lina’s pulse accelerated. Draven rarely looked nervous. Yet tonight, there was something unusual about him. His jaw was tight. His shoulders rigid. Almost as if he were preparing for a battle. “My kingdom has always come before everything else.” Murmurs of agreement spread through the guests. Lina frowned slightly. What did that have to do with their ceremony? Draven continued. “As king, every decision I make must protect our future.” A strange chill traveled down her spine. The words felt wrong. The atmosphere felt wrong. She glanced around. Several elders exchanged confused looks. Even Martha, standing near the wall, appeared worried. Lina swallowed hard. Her hands tightened around her dress. Draven’s gaze found hers again. For one brief moment, something flashed across his face. Regret. The sight nearly stopped her heart. Regret? Why would he regret tonight? The ceremony master cleared his throat. “Your Majesty?” Draven looked away from Lina. The distance between them suddenly felt enormous. Then he spoke words that made the room grow colder. “The future of this kingdom depends on destiny.” Lina’s breath caught. Destiny. Every werewolf understood what that meant. Mates. The Moon Goddess. Fate. The crowd became completely silent. Draven continued. “The Moon Goddess has finally revealed the truth.” A whisper spread through the hall. Lina’s heart pounded violently. The truth? What truth? Her instincts screamed that something terrible was coming. She wanted to run. Wanted to stop him. Wanted to ask what was happening. But she couldn’t move. She could only watch. Only wait. Draven inhaled slowly. Then he closed his eyes. As if gathering strength. As if forcing himself to continue. When he opened them again, they looked colder than ever. And somehow that hurt even more. “Lina.” The sound of her name echoed throughout the hall. Every guest turned toward her. Lina’s throat tightened. “Yes?” she whispered. Draven stared at her. For a heartbeat, she thought he might stop. Thought he might walk toward her. Thought everything would be fine. Then he spoke. “You deserve the truth.” The words struck her like a physical blow. Fear exploded inside her chest. “What truth?” she asked softly. A painful silence followed. The entire kingdom seemed to be holding its breath. Draven didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he looked toward the massive entrance doors. Lina followed his gaze. Confusion filled her. Why was he looking there? The doors remained closed. Nothing happened. Several seconds passed. Then— Boom. The massive doors swung open. Gasps filled the hall. Every head turned. Every eye widened. Lina froze. A woman stepped through the entrance. Beautiful. Unbelievably beautiful. Long dark hair cascaded down her back. Her violet eyes shimmered beneath the crystal lights. She wore a silver gown that hugged her elegant figure. Confidence radiated from her every step. The room immediately erupted into whispers. “Who is she?” “I’ve never seen her before.” “Is she a noble?” “Why is she here?” Lina’s heart began to race faster. Something about this felt horribly wrong. The woman walked calmly through the crowd. Straight toward the throne. Straight toward Draven. Straight toward— No. No. No. Lina’s pulse thundered in her ears. The woman stopped beside him. The entire hall fell silent once more. Draven looked at the stranger. The stranger looked at him. Then— She smiled. And Draven smiled back. The world seemed to tilt beneath Lina’s feet. Because it wasn’t a polite smile. It wasn’t the smile of strangers. It was the smile of two people who shared something deeper. Something intimate. Something dangerous. A cold wave of dread crashed over her. For the first time all night, she realized something. This woman wasn’t here by accident. She belonged here. And whatever was about to happen… Was going to destroy her. The woman moved closer to Draven. Close enough that their shoulders almost touched. Lina could barely breathe. Questions flooded her mind. Who was she? Why was she here? Why was Draven looking at her that way? And why did it feel like her entire future was slipping through her fingers? Draven slowly turned back toward the crowd. Then toward Lina. His expression shattered what little hope remained inside her. Because there was sorrow in his eyes. The kind of sorrow people carried before delivering devastating news. “Lina…” His voice was barely above a whisper. But she heard it. Every person in the hall heard it. And suddenly, she knew. Whatever came next… Would change her life forever.
