Shifting shadows

Elias leaned against the wall, his eyes narrowing slightly as he watched the group. His gaze flicked to Lily, who was sitting with Ivy by the large oak table. Something about her always felt off to him—there was an aura of secrecy surrounding her, something he couldn’t quite place. He couldn’t shake the feeling that she was hiding something, but Elysia had made it clear that he needed to give her space. Still, he wasn’t one to let his guard down easily. Elysia, noticing his stare, sauntered over to where he stood, her presence commanding as always. She didn’t need to ask what was on his mind. “You’re still watching her,” Elysia said, her tone low but not unfriendly. Elias kept his gaze fixed on Lily, pretending not to notice her approach. “I don’t trust her.” Elysia’s lips curved into a small smile, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “I know. But trust me, Elias, she’s just curious. She’s been through a lot. She doesn’t know this world yet.” He didn’t respond immediately, his mind still churning over the things he had observed. But he knew better than to push Elysia on this—she had a way of making her decisions, and Lily was one of those decisions. “I just don’t like the way she looks at us. Like she’s searching for something.” Elysia sighed, leaning against the mantel, her arms crossed. “She’s learning, Elias. Trying to understand everything we’re involved in. Let her figure it out. She’s not a threat… not yet.” Elias studied her for a moment, then turned to look at Lily again, who was speaking quietly with Ivy. He was still unsure, but he dropped the subject. For now. Meanwhile, Ivy was sitting at the table, her brow furrowed in concentration. Her fingers traced delicate patterns in the air as she practiced her magic, but there was an obvious struggle. Elysia had been pushing her hard, teaching her a form of magic that wasn’t black, but it was also far from good. It existed in the grey space in between, a dangerous balance that required finesse. Elysia approached Ivy quietly, watching her for a moment before speaking. “How’s it going?” she asked softly. Ivy looked up at her, her eyes tired but determined. “It’s harder than I thought. But I’m getting there. I can feel the power shifting… but it’s not like what I’ve learned before.” Elysia nodded, her eyes thoughtful. “You’re on the right track. The trick is control. Magic isn’t just about power, Ivy—it’s about balance. You can’t let the magic consume you.” Ivy glanced down at her hands, where faint sparks of energy flickered around her fingertips. “I don’t want to fall into black magic again. I can’t…” Elysia’s voice softened, the usual hardness in her tone replaced by something more vulnerable. “I know. That’s why I’m here. You’re stronger than you think. But you have to trust yourself.” Ivy nodded, her resolve firming up again. “I will. I won’t give in.” Elysia smiled, then glanced over at Kieran, who had been waiting patiently for their next training session. He was stretching, his eyes focused as always, his frame radiating a quiet intensity. Elysia’s thoughts shifted back to the task at hand. She walked over to Kieran, her expression serious. “You ready?” Kieran gave her a determined nod. “I’m ready.” Elysia’s lips quirked upward at the edge. “Good. We’ve got work to do.” She led him outside into the clearing, the cool night air brushing against their skin. The moon hung high in the sky, its light perfect for their training. Elysia had already prepared him for the agony of transformation, but that didn’t make it any easier. The first transformation was always the hardest. She’d seen it too many times to count—witnessed the tortured process of body and mind becoming something else entirely. Kieran clenched his jaw as the transformation began, his body contorting painfully. Elysia stood just close enough to be there for him but not too close to overwhelm him. He needed to focus. He needed to control the shift. “Remember,” Elysia said, her voice firm and steady, “it’s not just about strength. It’s about control. You can’t let the wolf take over. You have to lead it.” Kieran’s body spasmed as the change took over, but he kept his focus. His eyes locked onto hers as the pain seemed to stretch endlessly. “I won’t let it control me.” She nodded in approval. “Good. But it’s not just about saying it. Show me.” His body finally settled, shifting from human to wolf, the moonlight casting a pale glow over his new form. He stood on four legs, his muscles rippling as he adjusted to the changes. Elysia crossed her arms, watching with a critical eye. “Now, fight me.” Without warning, she lunged at him, her speed catching him off guard. He dodged, moving faster than he thought he could, but still, he struggled to keep up. Elysia’s movements were fluid and precise—she had mastered her wolf side long ago. Kieran shifted and lunged forward, but she easily sidestepped, using the momentum to knock him down. He growled but got back up quickly, determination lighting his eyes. “You’re faster than I thought,” Elysia said, a slight smirk on her lips as she circled him. “But you still have a long way to go. You have power, Kieran, but power alone won’t win battles.” Kieran growled low, clearly frustrated. “Then teach me.” Elysia’s eyes softened just a little. “You’re learning. It’s about more than just surviving the fight. It’s about mastering the beast inside you.” She paused, watching him carefully. “If you don’t control it, it will control you.” Kieran took a deep breath and steadied himself, his eyes narrowing as he prepared for the next round. “Let’s go again.” Meanwhile, Lily sat by the window, watching the training session from afar. Her mind was elsewhere, not fully focused on the present. She knew that she had to keep up her façade—her curiosity about them, her interest in Elysia’s power. But underneath that, there was something deeper—something darker. Lily had a purpose. She had known from the beginning what she had to do. But the more she spent time with them, the more her feelings began to shift. It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. She looked out the window, her eyes tracing the moonlit night, her thoughts drifting to the Fae and the others who had given her instructions. They didn’t know what was happening—how close she had come to understanding the true power that the Blood Demon held. But there was no turning back now.
