Chapter 4

698 Words
The next day unfurled beneath an overcast sky, thick clouds smothering the sun as if the heavens themselves brooded alongside her. Layla stood by the classroom window, watching raindrops streak the glass. They chased each other in winding trails, unpredictable—like her thoughts since yesterday. No matter how hard she tried to focus, her mind drifted back to him. "Layla," Xulie’s voice cut through her reverie, gentle but grounded. "You’re doing it again." She blinked, heat rising to her cheeks. "Doing what?" "Staring off like a lovesick poet," Xulie teased, dropping into the seat beside her. She bumped her shoulder lightly against Layla’s, flashing her usual grin. "You seriously have it bad." "I do not," Layla shot back, but the protest felt thin even to her own ears. Before Xulie could press further, the classroom door slid open with a metallic rasp. A hush fell over the room. It wasn’t a teacher—but Xavier. His presence was like the pull of the tide, subtle yet inescapable. He walked in, sharp eyes scanning the class as if calculating the safest distance to keep from everyone else. When his gaze landed—briefly—on Layla, her heart did a treacherous flip. Then, just as quickly, he looked away, slipping into his seat at the far end of the room. Layla forced herself to breathe. She told herself it was nothing. He probably looked at everyone like that. It didn’t mean anything. Except… it did. "Are you going to say something to him?" Xulie whispered, low enough so no one else could hear. Layla hesitated. Her lips parted, then closed. She shook her head, her voice small. "Not now." Coward, she thought bitterly. But even so, her chest tightened with something she couldn’t name. — The day passed in a blur of unfinished notes and restless thoughts. When the final bell rang, a quiet tension hummed under her skin. Layla gathered her things with practiced slowness, as if waiting for something—or someone. And then, like fate was teasing her, she caught a glimpse of Xavier heading toward the back exit, where fewer students lingered. Without thinking, her feet moved. Her heart pounded a frantic rhythm against her ribs as she followed at a distance, the hallway narrowing beneath flickering lights. He stepped outside, into the rain-kissed courtyard, where the clouds had finally broken to reveal a pale sliver of moonlight slicing through the gloom. For a moment, he stood beneath it, silver light brushing against the sharp angles of his face. There was a quiet wildness to him, as if he belonged to the night more than to the day. "Xavier," she called, her voice carrying across the damp air. He didn’t turn right away. When he did, his expression was unreadable, eyes shadowed but gleaming faintly under the moon. "What are you doing out here?" he asked, tone guarded. Layla swallowed her nervousness. "I could ask you the same thing." His lips curved into something that wasn’t quite a smile—wry, distant, a mask slipping for just a heartbeat. "You shouldn’t follow shadows," he said softly. "They’ll only lead you deeper into the dark." "I don’t mind," she replied, surprising even herself. Her pulse quickened, but she kept her gaze steady. "Maybe I want to know what’s hiding there." For the first time, something flickered behind his guarded eyes. Conflict. Curiosity. Maybe even fear. "You really shouldn’t," Xavier murmured, almost to himself. But he didn’t leave. Instead, he took a step closer. Rain clung to the edges of his hair, and the moonlight caught in his gaze like a trapped star. Layla felt the distance between them shrink to a breath. "You're not afraid of the dark, Layla?" His voice was quieter now, rougher, like gravel beneath velvet. Her answer came before she could think too hard. "No," she whispered. "I’m afraid of not understanding it." A long silence stretched between them. Then, barely audible, Xavier said, "Then you’re braver than you look." Without another word, he turned, disappearing into the night’s embrace. But this time, Layla felt something invisible tether him to her—like an unfinished sentence left hanging in the air.
