Elena glanced at the person in the doorway, and her heart rushed into her chest. Her heart raced, and she briefly believed she might pass out. The man across the way was not a face she had expected to see—never at this time, never at this location.
Prince Kaelen Valerion, the king's son, stood there with the power of a storm. His presence was strong, and his stare, however chilly, was purposefully harsh. Tall, he carried the royal bearing of one born into authority. But in his gaze was something more: a heat that dried Elena's throat. He was not only the prince of Valerium; he was a guy weighed down by his political battles, a man whose destiny had never really been his own.
"Elena," Prince Kaelen murmured, his voice deeper than she recalled and tinged with desperation. "We have to talk."
Elena stood motionless, her feet fixed as though the floor under her was made of stone. This was a talk she was unready for—not now, not when the whole basis of her life had already been broken.
His appealing but resolute gaze kept her hostage; she knew she couldn't escape him. Elena stammered, her voice shaking, "You should not be here. This concerns the family.”
Slow and careful, Prince Kaelen entered the room. Dark-eyed, he darted glances between Elena and her father, who stood beside Lord Cedric, obviously confused by the prince's unanticipated arrival.
Kaelen murmured softly, “I understand, but this is more than a family issue. It affects everyone in Valerium. You merit the truth, Elena.”
“The reality?” Elena repeated, her thoughts racing. She looked at her father, whose face had gone white. He opened his mouth, apparently to speak, but Kaelen silenced him with a lifted hand.
"This marriage," Kaelen said, his gaze now locked on Elena with an intensity she had never experienced, "was never simply about you and Cedric. Your father has kept things that might ruin what we have created from you”.
Elena felt a shiver down her back. The prince's words eluded her. She turned to Lord Cedric, who wore an inscrutable look, then to her father and KaeIen. Elena felt choked up when she spoke, "That's quite all right. It's either an assailable lie or an unbelievable truth.”
“This concerns politics. For the benefit of the kingdom, my family has decided. It's about alliances, nothing more.”
Kaelen declined. “ Elena, no. It's beyond that. And you have been used—just like I have.”
Each word was pregnant with an accusation that she was not prepared to counter, and the phrases struck Elena with the force of a slap. Her knees felt as though they were buckling, and she had to clutch the back of a chair to hold herself upright.
Kaelen said, his voice dropping, "You have been part of a plan, a scheme that dates back years.” “Your father does not see you as only a pawn. You are the door to something far larger.”
"Elena," her father at last began, his voice laden with guilt.” “Though true, I didn't want you to find out like this. The marriage is more than simply a political one. It's all part of a far bigger plan. House Morvannis is not only cooperating with us for the throne. They wish to govern all, even the realm itself.”
The ground under her appeared to give way. The convent's walls, her life, and all she had known suddenly seemed far away, like a dream. Raised to think she was a vessel of purity, her life was her own to offer in God's service. But suddenly, all had been flipped upside down. Her father's words, his confession, sliced deeper than any weapon.
"You..." Elena said, her voice empty, "You have been using me." "All these years, everything I thought, it was all just a game to you." Though he had no apologies in his eyes, her father gazed at her with remorse and simply a sense of finality.
“Elena, I had no option.” “The realm required this.” “Valerium's survival depends only on your sacrifice and our partnership with House Morvannis.” “There is no other choice.”
"But I don't want this!" The words slipped from Elena, breaking her voice. Her face begged as she looked at Cedric.
“You should have told me, why not?” “How come you didn't inform me?”
Cedric looked pensively; there seemed to be sadness and guilt printed on his face! “
"I was unable to.” “ The pact was already in place.” “Elena, you are part of a plan I lacked the authority to halt.”
Elena felt the room's weight crushing her. It was the realization that all she had lived for, everything she had been taught, was a lie, not only her father's treachery or Cedric's quiet. Kaelen moved closer, his words quiet yet urgent.
“Elena, you need not carry on with this.” “Your marriage to Cedric is not all at stake here.” “You must believe me; we can yet alter the result.”
Her eyes danced with uncertainty.
“Prince Kaelen, what are you saying?”
"The way out," He continued, changing his voice to a lower tone as if revealing a dangerous secret. “It calls for all of us to stand united, nevertheless.” “The kingdom is not as safe as you believe.” “The throne is not as safe as your father thinks.”
Anger colored her father's features as he stepped forward.
"Enough, Kaelen.” “You have no cause to meddle.” “As planned, Elena will wed Cedric.” “This is over.”
Ignoring him, Kaelen concentrated just on Elena.
“Your father is mistaken.” “He's blind to the actual situation in Valerium.” “Marrying Cedric will make you a pawn in a game that might ruin everything.”
Overwhelmed by the weight of Kaelen's words, Elena stepped back, and her heart raced. Questions filled her head—questions she wasn't sure she wanted to know the solutions to. She swung and attempted to control her breathing but found the words lacking.
“What should I do?”
Kaelen's eyes were black with resolve.
“Accompany me.” “Allow me to reveal the reality to you.” “Elena, we can prevent this, but only if you decide to act right now.”
The entrance to the drawing room burst open just as Elena was ready to answer.
A person, cloaked in darkness, walked inside. The voice that followed was icy and threatening.
“ Stop!. Everything you believe to be true is false.”
