The distant engine outside faded into the night, but the tension inside the control room didn’t move.
Serena’s chest felt tight.
Too tight.
Everything that had just happened replayed in her mind at once—the gunshot, the blood on Daniel’s sleeve, the traitor aiming at him, Lena standing in the doorway like she had expected it all.
Her hands slowly dropped from Daniel’s arm.
“What is this?” she whispered.
Daniel watched her carefully.
Not answering.
That made the fear worse.
Serena stepped back.
Just one step.
It felt like the room shifted with her.
“I should never have come here,” she said quietly. “I should never have met you.”
The words landed harder than the gunshots had.
Daniel’s expression changed instantly.
Not anger.
Something deeper.
Something sharp.
“You don’t mean that.”
“I do,” she said, her voice trembling despite how much she tried to steady it. “My life was normal before this. I didn’t have people breaking into my house. I didn’t have strangers trying to kill someone standing next to me.”
Her eyes dropped to the blood staining his sleeve.
“And I definitely didn’t have files written about me.”
Silence filled the space between them.
Daniel took a step toward her.
Serena instinctively took another step back.
That stopped him.
The distance between them suddenly felt enormous.
“You’re scared,” he said quietly.
“Of course I’m scared!” she snapped, the panic finally breaking through. “Your enemies are breaking into houses. Your former—whatever she is—is bringing people here. Your own guards are trying to shoot you.”
Her breath shook.
“And somehow I’m in the middle of it.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You’re not the target.”
“That doesn’t make it better.”
Another step back.
This time she nearly hit the desk behind her.
Her voice dropped.
“I want to leave.”
The room went completely still.
Daniel didn’t move.
Didn’t blink.
“You’re not leaving.”
The certainty in his voice made her stomach twist.
“That wasn’t a request,” she said.
“No.”
The answer came without hesitation.
Serena stared at him. “You can’t decide that for me.”
“I can,” he said calmly. “Because the moment Lena came here, this stopped being your choice.”
Anger flashed through her fear.
“So I’m just trapped here now?”
“No,” he said.
Another step forward.
Slow.
Careful.
Like he was approaching something fragile.
“You’re protected.”
“That’s the same thing,” she whispered.
He was close again now.
Too close.
Her back touched the edge of the desk.
Daniel stopped just in front of her.
Close enough that she could see the tension in his breathing.
Close enough that she could feel the heat of him again.
“You think I wanted this?” he asked quietly.
She didn’t answer.
His hand lifted slowly, hesitating for the briefest second before resting lightly against the side of her arm.
The contact sent a sharp pulse through her chest.
“If you leave,” he continued, voice lower now, “you won’t have protection.”
“And if I stay?”
His eyes held hers.
“You have me.”
The words weren’t loud.
But they landed with weight.
Serena’s heart stumbled.
“That’s exactly the problem,” she whispered.
Something flickered across his face.
For the first time since she met him, Daniel looked… frustrated.
Not with her.
With himself.
“You think I’m the danger,” he said.
“Aren’t you?”
Silence stretched.
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
His hand tightened slightly around her arm, not enough to hurt, just enough to stop her from pulling away again.
“I’ve spent weeks trying to keep you away from this,” he said. “Trying to make sure none of it touched you.”
Her brows pulled together.
“Then why am I here?”
His gaze dropped to her lips for a fraction of a second before returning to her eyes.
“Because you don’t listen.”
The tension between them thickened.
Serena felt her pulse rising again.
Not just from fear.
And that confused her even more.
She shook her head slightly.
“This is insane.”
“Probably.”
“I should go back to my room.”
Daniel didn’t move.
“You can’t.”
“Why?”
His eyes hardened.
“Because Lena now knows exactly where you are.”
The words sent cold through her veins.
Serena’s voice dropped.
“You think she’s coming back?”
Daniel’s answer came without hesitation.
“Yes.”
A heavy silence settled in the room.
Then Serena asked the question she hadn’t wanted to ask.
“What does she want from me?”
Daniel’s gaze darkened.
And this time, there was no hesitation in his voice.
“She wants what you are.”
Serena’s heart pounded.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel exhaled slowly.
Then he said something that made the fear inside her double.
“It means,” he said quietly, “she’s not done trying to replace herself.”
Serena froze.
Replace herself.
Her voice barely came out.
“With me?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because at that exact moment—
A phone on the desk started ringing.
One of the secure lines.
Daniel glanced at the caller ID.
And for the first time since the attack—
He looked genuinely surprised.
Serena noticed immediately.
“Who is it?”
Daniel slowly turned the screen toward her.
One name glowed on the display.
Lena Cross.
