Serena couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. At first, it was subtle—just the way Daniel dodged her questions, the way he smiled but never answered.
But as days passed, the questions inside her grew louder.
One evening, after dinner, she lingered by the staircase, watching Daniel disappear into his study.
“I don’t get it,” she said, her voice quiet, but sharp with frustration. “What exactly do you do, Daniel? You’re never gone, but I never see you at an office. You never talk about work.”
He leaned against the doorframe, his expression unreadable.
“Serena,” he said slowly, “some things are better left unknown. You don’t need to worry about it. Just… enjoy yourself here.”
“Enjoy myself?” she snapped, frustration cracking her calm. “You live in a mansion bigger than any place I’ve ever seen! You give me everything! And you still won’t tell me what you do? How you have all this?”
Daniel’s eyes softened, but his tone remained firm. “Because knowing isn’t safe for you. And because I don’t want this to change how you see me—or yourself. You deserve to live without fear. That’s more important than curiosity right now.”
Serena’s stomach twisted. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to accept his answer and move on. But curiosity had a life of its own, and it gnawed at her relentlessly.
Days later, she tried again.
She followed him one evening, keeping to the shadows, heart pounding so loud she thought he would hear it. Daniel met with men in expensive suits. There were briefcases, hushed words, gestures she didn’t fully understand.
And then, the moment came: she realized it wasn’t legal.
Daniel’s wealth, his calm control, the power he exuded—it wasn’t from normal business.
Serena froze, a chill running through her. Part of her wanted to scream, to run, to confront him. But another part… another part feared what she would uncover if she did.
When she returned to the mansion, she confronted him anyway.
“I saw you,” she said, voice trembling, but fierce. “I know what you’re doing. It’s not legal, Daniel. Tell me the truth. I need to know who you really are.”
Daniel’s calm eyes met hers. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then he spoke softly:
“You’re right, Serena. What I do… it isn’t something most people would approve of. But everything I have, everything you see—it’s built on risks most would never take. And it keeps you safe.”
Serena’s chest tightened. “Safe… from what?”
He paused. “From the world outside. From the people who would see you as weak. From the life you left behind. From everything that tried to break you before.”
Serena’s mind spun.
He had given her shelter, safety, comfort—and yet, the truth was darker than she could have imagined.
But even in the fear, the anger, the betrayal, a spark lingered. Something she couldn’t explain. Something about Daniel made her heart beat faster, made her want to trust him, even when the world told her not to.
She realized then that life in this mansion was no longer simple.
It was survival, yes.
It was mystery, yes.
But it was also… something dangerously close to hope.
And Serena wasn’t sure she was ready for either.
