As soon as Forrest spoke, the whole office quieted down almost instantaneously.
The few people who were gossiping enthusiastically were terrified and their faces turned pale.

Ryan worried for people in the room. Why would they even gossip about Miss Williams's private life when they could literally talk about anything else? Miss Williams and Mr. Hanks were still husband and wife on paper. This was a slap in the face for Forrest.
They were colleagues after all and Ryan couldn't bear to see them like that, so he tried to smooth things over. "Why are you guys still standing there? Hurry up and get back to work."
