Chapter 4 - The Enemy

The room remained silent long after the agent stopped speaking. Emma could hear the rain against the window. The distant hum of hospital machinery. The steady rhythm of Nathaniel's heart monitor. Everything else seemed to disappear. Someone may know Dr. Emma Hart exists. The words replayed in her head. Over and over. As though repeating them might somehow make them less alarming. It didn't. "What exactly does that mean?" she asked. The agent exchanged a glance with Nathaniel. Emma immediately noticed. And hated it. That look. The one people gave when they knew something she didn't. "What aren't you telling me?" Neither man answered right away. Nathaniel looked away first. The movement was subtle. But she caught it. He was avoiding her eyes. That frightened her more than anything else. Finally, the agent spoke. "It means we're being cautious." Emma folded her arms. "That's not an answer." "It's the only one you're getting." Her temper flared. "Wonderful." The agent remained unmoved. Nathaniel spoke quietly. "Agent Ross." The warning in his voice was unmistakable. Ross sighed. Then rubbed a hand over his face. For the first time, he looked tired instead of intimidating. "Look," he said. "We don't believe you're in immediate danger." Immediate. Emma seized on the word. "You don't believe." Ross grimaced. "Poor choice of phrasing." "Very poor." Nathaniel stood. The movement was too quick. Pain flashed across his face. His hand instinctively moved toward his injured shoulder. Emma immediately stepped forward. "Sit down." "I'm fine." "No." She pointed toward the chair. "Sit." For a second, Nathaniel stared at her. Then surprisingly— He obeyed. Ross watched the exchange with open amusement. Nathaniel noticed. "Leave." The agent laughed. "I'll be outside." A moment later, the door closed. Silence returned. Heavy. Uncomfortable. Emma looked at Nathaniel. Nathaniel looked at the floor. Neither spoke. Then finally— "Who is Vincent Moretti?" Nathaniel became very still. The reaction answered half her question. She sat down. "You know him." His jaw tightened. "Unfortunately." "Who is he?" Another silence. Longer this time. Emma waited. She had learned something about Nathaniel over the past two days. Pressure didn't work. Patience did. Eventually he exhaled. "He's a criminal." Emma raised an eyebrow. "A criminal." "Yes." "Nathaniel." A faint hint of exasperation crossed his face. "You asked." "You know exactly what I mean." His gaze moved toward the rain-covered window. For several moments he said nothing. When he finally spoke, his voice was quieter. More controlled. As though every word required effort. "I acquired a logistics firm some years back, five to be exact." Emma listened carefully. Nathaniel rarely volunteered information. This mattered. "At the time it looked legitimate." He laughed softly. The sound contained no humor. "It wasn't." Emma felt a chill. "What happened?" Nathaniel stared at the city beyond the glass. "The company was laundering money." Her stomach dropped. Nathaniel continued. "Millions of dollars." "Through your business?" "Yes." His expression hardened. "When I discovered it, I started digging." Emma could almost see it happening. The billionaire entrepreneur following loose threads. Finding things he wasn't supposed to find. "I found shell companies." His voice remained calm. Too calm. "Fake contracts. Offshore accounts. Bribery." Emma swallowed. "And Moretti?" Nathaniel finally looked at her. His eyes were cold now. Not toward her. Toward memory. "Everything led back to him." The room felt smaller. Suddenly much smaller. Nathaniel continued. "Vincent Moretti doesn't just run organized crime." The slightest edge entered his voice. "He owns politicians." Emma's pulse quickened. "He owns judges." A pause. "He owns people." The words landed heavily. Nathaniel looked away again. "I should have walked away." Emma frowned. "What?" "When I found the evidence." His laugh returned. Bitter. "I should have destroyed it." "You don't mean that." "Don't I?" The question surprised her. Because it sounded genuine. Not rhetorical. Genuine. Emma stared at him. Nathaniel's gaze remained fixed on the window. "I had employees." His voice lowered. "Friends." The silence stretched. Emma suddenly understood. "Oh." Nathaniel nodded once. Several seconds passed before he spoke again. "They started disappearing." The words hit like a punch. Emma felt her chest tighten. "What?" Nathaniel's expression never changed. Which somehow made it worse. "Car accident." A pause. "A week later, another executive vanished." Emma didn't speak. Couldn't. Nathaniel continued. "As the evidence grew, so did the body count." The room became painfully quiet. For the first time since meeting him, Emma saw beyond the billionaire. Beyond the headlines. Beyond the wealth. She saw the burden. The guilt. The impossible weight he carried. "You blamed yourself." She blurted. Nathaniel didn't answer. He didn't have to. His silence was answer enough. Emma's chest ached unexpectedly. Because she understood now. The fear. The exhaustion. The constant vigilance. He wasn't only running from Moretti. He was running from guilt. From regret. From every person who had suffered because he refused to look away. Nathaniel spoke again. "They offered me a deal." Emma blinked. "A deal?" "Walk away." His expression darkened. "Forget what I knew." "What did you do?" Nathaniel looked at her. Directly. Steadily. "I went to the FBI." Something flickered inside her. Respect. Admiration. Something deeper. Because that choice couldn't have been easy. Not when the consequences looked like this. Armed guards. Gunshot wounds. Protective custody. A life reduced to hiding. Nathaniel saw something on her face. Whatever it was made him look away first. "I wasn't being noble." Emma frowned. "No?" "I was angry." A humorless smile appeared. "I blamed myself; I’d made a terrible mistake." Emma shook her head. "You didn’t know." Nathaniel's gaze returned to hers. “Which was why I went to the FBI when I finally did.” The answer came immediately. Certain. Unwavering. Nathaniel studied her. The room seemed strangely quiet again. As though everything outside had faded. Leaving only the two of them. Emma held his gaze. And for a brief moment she saw something vulnerable beneath all the armor. Not the billionaire. Not the witness. Not the hunted man. Just Nathaniel. A man who had done the right thing. And paid for it every day since. A sharp knock interrupted the moment. Both of them looked toward the door. Agent Ross entered. His expression was grim. Again. Emma was beginning to think it might be permanent. "What now?" Nathaniel asked. Ross stepped inside. "We found the stolen ID." Nathaniel straightened immediately. "So?" Ross hesitated. Emma felt her stomach tighten. The hesitation couldn't be good. "It belonged to a nurse." The room fell silent. Ross continued. "Someone copied her credentials three days ago." Nathaniel's face hardened. "Meaning?" Ross looked directly at him. "It means whoever came into this hospital wasn't improvising." A cold knot formed in Emma's stomach. Ross continued. "They planned this." Silence. Heavy. Uncomfortable. Dangerous. Nathaniel's gaze drifted toward Emma. Just briefly. Only a second. But she caught it. And suddenly she understood exactly what he was thinking. This wasn't over. Not even close. Someone had spent days preparing to reach him. Days. Which meant somewhere beyond the hospital walls— Someone was still looking. Still watching. Still waiting. And for the first time since this nightmare began— Nathaniel looked genuinely worried. Not just for himself. For her too.
