Chapter Three

1039 Words
... My ears were ringing. Everything was loud, very loud. Screaming everywhere and all the voices merging into one forming an incoherent blabber. The ringing faded into the distance and the voices became clearer. I could now clearly distinguish three voices. "he should wake up anytime now" "will the others wake?" "they are not showing signs of regaining consciousness as yet, but rest assured, they will soon." "I hope they do" "Miranda, come now. let's not bother the doctor." "ok dad" It sounded like footsteps leaving. I managed to force my eyes open. I had to close them again instantly though, since the light stung my head. I slowly blinked them and then open. Everything was a white blur. "he's awake" my vision slowly got better as my eyes adjusted to the new brightness. I heard footsteps making there way closer. I took a while to figure out and assess my surroundings. I am laying on a bed, in a small room and a woman was standing next to my bed. I wonder how I reached here. I can't seem to remember anything that I did before now. I just realized that the person next to me was talking. She wasn't talking to me though. I looked more to the foot of the bed and noticed a man and young woman standing there. The woman was speaking to them. "yes, he will take a few minutes to fully awake and have his body get accustomed to the strain of being awake. Please don't bother him." Who were they talking about? I am guessing me since I'm on a bed, was unconscious and don't remember how I got there. I try to remember, but the only thing I can remember is a bright light and screaming. The woman turned towards me and this time I know she was talking to me. "how are you feeling?" I try to respond, but couldn't. My entire body feels numb and my throat can't even function. It's too dry. I try to speak again but didn't make any sound. "don't force yourself. You just woke. Hold on, let me get some water." "I'll get it" "you don't need to Miranda. Are you sure?" the man said. "yup, I'll manage" The woman turned to me and said "I am doctor Helen. You can call me doc." I nodded. She smiled lightly and then the girl who looked in her late teens walked in. She was carrying a glass of water and she walked towards me. Just as she was about to reach the bed, she tripped and spilled most of the water on the floor. I wanted to laugh at the funny look on her face but couldn't. The man, who looked a lot like her scolded "Miranda, have I not said a million times to be careful. That's exactly why I asked if you can manage, you are very careless." "Dad. I can't help it. I don't think I have ever not been clumsy." This girl was funny. So she is called Miranda. I only now noticed that the doctor left, since she was now walking in with a glass of water. "Miranda, please give our patient this, I have to go check on the others. I will be back soon." Miranda collected the water and handed it to me. I drank it and immediately felt the relief. My throat screamed for more and I obliged, gulping more water to soothe my throat. After finishing the glass, I felt much better. I smiled and thanked Miranda. She said it's ok and asked how I felt. "I'm good now. My throat was screaming before though. Your water really helped." "it wasn't mine" "still you went for it and gave me a good laugh even if I couldn't laugh out loud," I said smiling. She blushed and said "stop teasing me." I laughed. The nurse came back and smiled at Miranda. She asked me how I was doing and I said fine. She did a normal check up and said I should be ok with enough rest. "Doc, how did I end up here?" "What do you remember?" "If I'm being honest, I don't remember anything other than a bright light and screaming." "Memory loss is common in cases where the patient was unconscious for a while. It can be temporary or permanent. we can't know at this stage." "oh, so where is this place?" "you're in our village, Hinsworth." Miranda supplies. "How did I get here?" "We found you and a few other persons unconscious, in the middle of a desert, with no transportation. You sure you don't remember what you were doing there?" "nope. A desert? What was I doing there? A few others? Where are they?" "They are in the other room. They should be waking up also. They are taking longer though since none of them are showing signs of waking up as yet." After telling me this, Miranda turned to the doctor and asked how the rest of them are. She is so concerned and caring. the doctor told Miranda they are ok and that she have a few patients who just came to go and check. She left Miranda with instructions on some medicine and supplement I should take. She also left Miranda with strict instructions to watch me and not make me exhaust myself and move around. Apparently my body needs a lot of rest. I wonder how she knows I won't be able to stay put. I don't think I can stay in one place for long. But now I have a guard who I am afraid of. She looks caring and calm but I somehow have a feeling that I should not irritate her if I want to live. Hopefully I make it through my stay here alive. I once again realized something. The man was still standing in a part of the room, observing everything. He is Miranda's dad if I remember correctly. Why is he looking so scary. And I think he wants to kill me with the vibe I am getting. He left with the doctor and I breathed a sigh of relief that at least I will live a while more. A/N Enjoy
